Chapter 626, Why Aren't You Dead

The clash between man and ghost inside the private room still caught the attention of the guards at the door.

They burst through the door and charged in. After a glance at 'Magnoro' standing inside, their eyes widened at the sight of the floating spirit.

A ghost…

"Mr. Magnoro... are you alright?!" The guard rushed over and shielded him.

Magnoro's eyes shifted quickly, and he said directly, "A ghost suddenly appeared here and tried to kill me. You can be my witness so we can pursue whoever is behind this."

Glenda showing up on Gold-Silver Island couldn't be a coincidence.

It had to be the island lord, who once served as a captain in Rentam City, that brought her here. Otherwise, how could a ghost possibly fly this far?

That's why he needed to control the narrative. Otherwise, it would be harder to resolve things.

As soon as he finished speaking, a scroll appeared in his hand and was instantly torn open.

Swoosh~!

A spear of holy light shot forward.

Glenda turned invisible to dodge, and the energy spear struck the wall behind, scattering countless fragments of light, forcing 'Glenda' to reappear.

Whoosh~!

Then came a second scroll. A powerful sword formed of holy light shot forward again.

Bang~!

Suddenly, a silver-white lightning serpent blasted in from the doorway.

It collided with the sword-shaped light, and the two spells clashed.

Various elements tangled and rampaged through the air, then dissipated.

At the same time, two figures rushed through the doorway—one with tiger-fist gauntlets, the other wielding a longsword.

Their bodies moved like lightning, reaching the opponent in an instant.

Boom-thud~!

The two guards dropped to the ground.

Downstairs, the patrol squad that had followed arrived at the tavern and began maintaining order.

They also blocked off the stairs to prevent any guests from coming up.

...…

Magnoro stared intensely at the person before him.

Black hair, black eyes—the lord of Gold-Silver Island.

The calm and resigned look he had just shown vanished instantly, replaced by the refined demeanor of a businessman.

He bowed slightly, "Magnoro, representative of the Emerald Valley Merchant guild. Greetings, Lord Island Master."

Wu Heng looked him over and asked, "Did you know Glenda could become a ghost? You've prepared quite a few anti-spirit items."

Magnoro's gaze flickered as he explained immediately, "It's indeed because of Glenda. Back then, she ventured deep into the forest, was lured by evil forces, broke her oil lamp, and burned herself to death. Since then, I've carried many anti-undead tools."

Wu Heng glanced at Glenda to the side.

She floated nearby, her expression sorrowful.

The other party had just tried to kill her, and with the things he said, it was clear there was no affection left.

Staring at him, she suddenly chuckled, "Magnoro, how can someone like you deserve to live? Why are you still alive?"

"Calm down," Wu Heng said, turning slightly.

Magnoro continued, "Island Lord Wu Heng, I accept your investigation. I hope you'll follow the guild's procedures and notify our merchant guild, so they're informed of my status."

"No need for all that hassle," Wu Heng smiled, signaling with his eyes.

Two skeletons moved at once.

In Magnoro's terrified gaze, the shield shattered again. The newly-formed one failed to stop the incoming enlarged fist.

Kashu punched straight through his throat.

Magnoro staggered back two steps, fell painfully with a look of unwillingness and terror.

Glenda looked at the body on the ground, wanted to speak, but held it back.

She simply returned into Wu Heng's body without emerging again.

What was that all about!

Glenda left again.

At least unlock a status effect or something.

Actually, their earlier confrontation had saved Wu Heng a lot of trouble.

Magnoro trying to kill Glenda's spirit was proof enough of his stance—it also disillusioned Glenda.

Especially for someone like Glenda, who always wanted to ask "why."

Wu Heng didn't believe she didn't have any lingering feelings.

Now it's done. Kill first, no need to deal with messes later.

But of course, that still left problems.

A merchant guild representative sent to the expo had just been killed by him in the tavern—it wouldn't be easy to explain.

If it came to that, he'd have to use a mask to fake his departure by ship.

Once he disappeared, it'd no longer have anything to do with Gold-Silver Island.

...…

"Strip the corpse's equipment," Wu Heng ordered.

A skeleton bent over and removed all the clothes and the space ring from the corpse.

[Devout Priest Robe]

(Description: Etched with protective runes, enhances Bewitch, Confuse, and Possession effects.)

Looks like he really was afraid of a ghost seeking revenge.

A bard walking around in full church gear.

Wu Heng picked up the space ring and looked through its contents.

Personal items, a pouch of gold coins, three large bags of silver coins, some tools, and several scrolls.

Wu Heng frowned.

With a flip of his hand, two rings appeared in his palm.

One ring had an eye symbol on it.

Secret Cult!

Her ex-husband was a member of the Secret Cult.

Wu Heng had seen these kinds of rings before—those with a certain rank in the Secret Cult wore them.

When meeting others, they could serve as proof of identity.

The other was a ring shaped like a cat's head.

Its style was quite similar to the Secret Cult's.

Seemed like it was also from some kind of organization.

"How was he connected to the Secret Cult?"

"If he's from the Secret Cult, even better—we can hand him directly to the guild."

He took out a straw mat and wrapped all three corpses, then stored them in the space ring.

Then he reopened the door and walked downstairs.

...…

Inside the tavern.

As he came down the stairs, both the patrol squad and the tavern guests looked up at once.

"Lord Island Master," everyone greeted.

Wu Heng nodded with a smile, "Sorry to disturb you all. We just received news—someone impersonated a consortium member to get on the island."

The crowd was shocked—they were here to catch a criminal?

No wonder there were so many skeletons.

"My lord, are you... alright?" the tavern owner asked nervously.

Wu Heng reassured, "It has nothing to do with you. The guild will announce the details later. No need to worry, everyone can go back to enjoying the story."

With that, he led his group out.

A large number of skeletons also withdrew from the tavern.

Only after they all left,

Did the tavern return to its lively atmosphere.

"The island lord's pretty kind."

"We didn't do anything wrong. It's not like they'd arrest us too."

"Way nicer than those noble lords."

...…

Guild, conference room.

Once the door was closed,

All three spirits were released.

Glenda floated to the side, looking a little out of sorts.

Wu Heng took out the Secret Cult ring and the other cat-head ring.

And said, "Glenda, these were found on your ex-husband. He was part of the Secret Cult?"

Glenda came back to her senses and looked closely.

"I didn't know about this."
