Genshin Impact: I'm The Envoy of Snezhnaya
Chapter 431: The Slightly Uneasy Traveler
"Allow me to formally introduce it: the city of ballads, wind, and dandelions—the City of Freedom, Mondstadt."
"Travelers under the protection of the Knights of Favonius, welcome to Mondstadt."
After finally passing through the heavily guarded city gates, Lumine heard Amber's introduction beside her.
In return for the Outrider's warmth and enthusiasm, she offered a friendly smile.
"Freedom, huh? Um... then why does the atmosphere feel a little strange?"
Paimon glanced back at the guards behind them and lowered her voice.
"You saw it yourselves back at the Hilichurl camp. Because of the recent dragon attacks, a lot of monsters have moved closer to the city. There isn't really any other choice."
Amber understood that Mondstadt's current state hardly looked like a city of freedom.
But compared to freedom, allowing dragons and monsters into the city would be far worse.
"Anyway, you two should look around the city for a while. I need to go report my mission. Let's meet later at the plaza up on the higher level."
Amber seemed to be in a hurry.
After bringing Lumine into the city and giving a few brief instructions, she quickly disappeared into the streets.
Once Amber was out of sight, Paimon floated closer to Lumine and whispered, "Traveler, you noticed it too, right?"
"Yeah. It was pretty obvious."
Looking in the direction Amber had gone, Lumine's expression became thoughtful.
Judging by her attitude, Amber genuinely seemed like a kind person.
However...
Ever since they first met, Amber had been constantly observing her.
That scrutinizing gaze had made Lumine uncomfortable more than once.
"I don't think she's a bad person."
After a moment of silence, Paimon folded her arms and confidently gave her verdict.
"Oh? What makes you so sure, Paimon?"
The certainty in Paimon's voice caught Lumine's attention.
"Because she said she'd treat Paimon to Sticky Honey Roast!"
Lumine froze for a moment before revealing an expression that clearly said, Of course that's your reason.
Judging people's character based on food was exactly the kind of thing Paimon would do.
Just like the black-clad man she was still terrified of.
"Come on, let's explore the city first."
"Mm-hmm!"
. . .
"You mean... you actually met that person?"
After hearing Amber's report, Jean looked somewhat surprised.
When the Ausbilder had first arrived in Mondstadt, the Knights had made a deal with him in an effort to determine his intentions.
Part of that deal involved helping him find someone.
According to his description, the person had golden hair, wore clothing from a foreign land, and traveled with a mysterious little companion.
If the Ausbilder hadn't specifically explained that the companion was humanoid, Kaeya might have gone so far as to invite Fischl from the Adventurers' Guild for questioning.
Later, when Dvalin appeared, they gradually came to believe that the person—or perhaps thing—the Ausbilder was searching for was actually Dvalin, the Anemo Archon's dragon companion.
As a result, they no longer paid much attention to the request.
They assumed the missing-person search had simply been a fabrication intended to mislead them.
After all, how could such a bizarre combination exist?
A foreign traveler with golden hair and a strange floating humanoid companion?
Only Amber, who had been assigned the task, continued to take it seriously.
"Yes. She matches the description you gave me perfectly."
Amber herself had been shocked when she first laid eyes on Lumine.
That was one of the reasons Lumine had felt she was being watched so closely.
"Where is she now?"
After a moment of contemplation, Jean decided to meet the girl personally.
She wanted to see for herself what was so special about the person whom the Ausbilder had specifically requested they find.
"I told her to explore the city for now and meet me later at the plaza."
"The plaza, huh... I understand."
. . .
Wind was the soul of Mondstadt.
That was what Amber had told Lumine, and it was also the impression Lumine herself had formed.
Even before arriving in the city, she had been able to sense the energy carried by the wind.
And Mondstadt displayed the Anemo element to its fullest extent.
Everywhere she looked stood towering windmills.
The buildings were covered with Windwheel Asters and roofs adorned with Philanemo Mushrooms, thriving wherever the breeze touched.
The wind seemed woven into every corner of the city, making it feel alive in a way unlike anywhere else she had ever seen.
The flower shop displayed blossoms unlike any she had seen before, including a peculiar flower that spun with the wind—the Windwheel Aster.
Children passing through the streets sang songs of the wind.
Merchants praised the blessings of the Anemo Archon.
Even drunken bards, staggering through the city in a haze of alcohol, strummed their instruments and sang epic tales about the God of Wind.
All of this gradually filled Lumine with curiosity about Mondstadt's deity—the Anemo Archon.
At the same time, she also became aware of certain unfriendly gazes.
Having survived alone in the wilderness for so long, Lumine was highly sensitive to certain things.
For example—
Being watched.
At first, it wasn't too bad.
Although Mondstadt's citizens had suffered greatly because of the dragon attacks, they didn't vent their frustrations on a foreign traveler.
Instead, they enthusiastically introduced her to the foods and merchandise sold in their shops.
That was, until...
"Paimon, hold onto my arm."
While appearing to browse the goods displayed along the street, Lumine quietly spoke to the little companion beside her.
"Huh? Why?"
Even as she asked, Paimon obediently wrapped both arms around Lumine's arm, making it look more like she was simply being affectionate.
Once she confirmed that Paimon had a firm grip, Lumine suddenly accelerated and darted into a nearby alleyway.
The people around her froze for half a second.
Then several of them immediately put down what they were doing and hurried after her.
But by the time they entered the alley...
There was no trace of her.
"You continue searching the city. I'll report this to Lord Harbinger."
After confirming that they had lost their target, the leader issued orders to his subordinates and hurried away.
Meanwhile, Lumine cautiously peeked her head out from the balcony of a nearby building.
A thoughtful expression appeared on her face once again.
"Th-Those people were following us?"
Still clinging tightly to Lumine's arm, Paimon looked visibly frightened.
"Yeah. They've been trailing us ever since we parted ways with Amber."
Pulling her head back from the balcony, Lumine lowered her voice.
Her expression had grown increasingly serious.
Amber's strange scrutiny combined with the pursuit by that mysterious organization left her feeling more and more uneasy.
"So what do we do now?"
"Let's meet up with Amber first and see if we can find some clues about the Anemo Archon through her."
Compared to the people following her, Amber seemed far more trustworthy.
At the very least, Amber had never shown any hostility toward her.
Having made up her mind, Lumine stood up.
As she did, however, she noticed a piece of paper stuck to her clothing.
It looked like an old flyer or advertisement.
"What's this...?"
The weathered paper had probably been blown onto the balcony by the wind.
As Lumine read it, her breathing gradually quickened.
The notice read:
Missing Blonde Girl
We sincerely hope kind-hearted individuals can provide information or assistance.
The missing person has blonde hair, wears clothing from a foreign land, and is accompanied by a strange little creature, making her very easy to recognize.
If you have any information, please contact Outrider Amber or the Knights of Favonius Headquarters.
Our deepest gratitude!
Lumine stared at the flyer.
The description matched her perfectly.
Every single detail.
And suddenly, all the strange events from earlier began connecting together in her mind.
