Chapter 74 - Rematch

Hanyuan landed Lingxiao in the center of his garden, the eagle's metallic wings unsettling the white jade mist. He reached into his storage ring, pulled out a thick haunch of Tier 1 spirit beast meat, and tossed it toward his companion. Lingxiao caught it mid air with a sharp trill of gratitude before retreating to its corner of the garden to feast.

Ignoring his own fatigue, Hanyuan walked straight to the training ground. He gripped the Roaring Thunder Spear, his Mortal Core pulsing in anticipation.

HISS! HISS!

He thrusted forward, and the air seemed to scream as the purple lines along the blackened shaft flared with violent electricity. Each strike left a faint smell of ozone and a lingering trail of frost. The weight, the balance, and the Qi conduction were all several levels above his previous weapon.

"What a fine spear," Hanyuan thought, a genuine smile breaking across his focused face.

He pushed through the full sequence of the Nine Thunderbolt Spear Manual. With the Roaring Thunder Spear, the transition from the eighth to the ninth strike felt like a natural progression of a storm rather than a desperate struggle. After a full day of drilling his Spirit grade techniques, Hanyuan finally lowered the weapon, his body drenched in sweat but his spirit revitalized.

Deep within his obsidian pagoda, Hanyuan had installed a luxury he had grown to love, a small, sunken pool made of white marble. It was nearly as large as his entire stone hut had been in the Outer Sect. Steam rose in thick, fragrant clouds from the geothermal water. Hanyuan added several handfuls of body tempering and mind calming herbs, watched the water turn a soft, milky blue, and stepped in.

"Wow... baths really are the best," Hanyuan murmured, sinking until the water reached his chin.

As the heat worked its way into his tired muscles, he began to map out his future. In three months, he would turn fourteen. He was no longer a child, he was an Inner Disciple with responsibilities and power. He wanted to return to Spirit Springs City for his birthday to bring even grander gifts for his parents and perhaps some better resources for the clan's training hall.

But there's also the Spirit Root, he mused, looking at his hands. To get the Ten Star Unity Pill and finally condense a root, I need 200 Mid grade spirit stones. After buying the spear and my last batch of resources, I'm down to about 100 Mid grade stones. I'm only halfway there.

He let out a long sigh, the steam ruffling his black hair. "Maybe I should have accepted Qin Yu's proposal to go on a mission after all. Sitting here cultivating is fast, but it doesn't pay the bills."

After drying off and donning fresh, silver trimmed robes, Hanyuan decided it was time for a change of pace. He stepped onto his balcony and let out a sharp whistle. Lingxiao, now fully rested and groomed, dove from the roof.

"Let's visit that grumpy old man," Hanyuan said with a smile.

They took to the skies, heading toward the specialized Alchemy Island. Even from a distance, the island was unmistakable, dozens of colossal buildings shaped like bronze and iron cauldrons dominated the landscape, their vents billowing multi colored smoke into the sky.

Hanyuan flew through the district for nearly an hour, navigating past high level laboratories and herb drying plazas, until he spotted a familiar, soot stained bronze building. It was identical in design to the one Elder Huo had in the Outer Sect, only three times larger.

Lingxiao landed heavily on the stone courtyard, and Hanyuan stepped down, approaching the massive bronze doors. He knocked firmly.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

The doors were snatched open with a sudden burst of Qi. Standing there was the same short, wild haired old man, his robes covered in even more chemical stains than before, and his iron gray beard singed at the tips.

"Greetings, Elder Huo," Hanyuan said, offering a respectful bow and a wide smile.

"Oh? Bai Hanyuan, you little brat!" Elder Huo snorted, crossing his arms and squinting at the boy. "I've been the Vice Leader of this island for months, and you didn't even visit me once since you crawled into the Inner Sect? Do you have no heart, or just a very thick skull?"

Despite the harsh words, the glint in Huo's eyes was unmistakably pleased. His gaze swept over Hanyuan, noting the stable Mortal Core aura and the new spear on his back.

"Don't just stand there like a statue!" Huo barked, grabbing Hanyuan's sleeve and hauling him inside. "The timing is perfect. I'm in the middle of a high difficulty refinement, and the Disciples they sent me from the Inner disciples are all useless cowards. I need your frost Qi now! Come, help me refine this pill!"

After three grueling but productive hours in the soot-stained laboratory, the pill refining process finally concluded. Hanyuan stood calmly in the center of the room, his breathing steady despite the heat. He chatted briefly with the eccentric alchemist about the shifting dynamics of the Inner Sect peaks before offering a respectful bow and stepping out into the fresh mountain air.

"My momentum is at its peak," Hanyuan thought, flexing his fingers as he looked toward the horizon. "It's time to settle that debt."

He mounted Lingxiao and flew straight to the Challenge Plaza. He didn't hesitate, striding to the Elder's desk and issuing an official challenge for Rank 140.

Thirty minutes later, the air temperature around the arena seemed to drop as a familiar figure descended. It was the woman with flowing black hair and cold, diamond blue eyes. She landed with a sharp click of her boots, her rapier like sword already humming at her waist.

"You really don't learn your lesson, do you, little boy?" she grunted, her gaze sweeping over his new spear. "You think a new toy and a few weeks of meditation will change the gap between us?"

"Experience is a cruel teacher," Hanyuan replied, his voice unyielding. "I've studied every mistake I made last time."

"Begin!" the middle aged Elder announced.

She exploded into action, her rapier becoming a silver blur. "Cutting Edge!"

The sharp Metal Qi hissed through the air. Hanyuan didn't dodge this time. He stepped forward, the Roaring Thunder Spear held low. He funneled his Qi into the shaft and countered with the 1st Thrust.

BOOM!

The collision of lightning and metal Qi created a spark so bright it illuminated the entire plaza. Both combatants were forced back three steps. The woman's eyes widened, her cold composure flickering for a split second.

"How did you improve so fast?" she demanded. "Your spear techniques... the focus is completely different!"

"I have a good memory for pain," Hanyuan smiled, his obsidian eyes glowing.

He dashed forward, initiating a series of lightning fast exchanges. Clang! Clang! Clang! Spear and sword met in a rhythmic crescendo. With every strike, the accumulative momentum of the Nine Thunderbolt Spear Manual began to take hold.

"5th Thrust!"

The spear tip, wreathed in violet electricity, hammered against her parry.

BOOM!

The force was monumental. She was blasted back three Steps, her wrists visibly trembling as the vibration traveled through her blade.

"Hmph!" She snorted, realizing she was being pushed into a corner. She grounded her feet and unleashed her strongest technique,a flurry of hundreds of metal Qi needles that sought to overwhelm his guard.

Hanyuan's mind was calm like a frozen lake. He activated the Thunderclap Steps, his silhouette flickering in and out of existence as he dodged the rain of metal.

"6th Thrust!"

He attacked from her blind spot, the spear whistling as it sought her flank. She reacted with her instincts, parrying the blow with a great burst of effort, but she was losing her footing.

"7th Thrust! 8th Thrust!"

Hanyuan linked the two moves in a single breath. The air groaned as the accumulated power of the lightning and frost Qi reached a fever pitch.

BOOM!

The resulting shockwaves cracked the arena tiles beneath them. The woman was now purely on the defensive, her face pale with exertion. Desperate to break the rhythm, she lunged into a close range roundhouse kick, aiming for Hanyuan's head.

Hanyuan didn't panic. He twisted his waist to the side with impossible fluidity, the wind of her kick ruffling his long black hair. From his bent position, he channeled every remaining drop of his Mortal Core's energy into the final move.

"9th Thrust!"

The Roaring Thunder Spear became a solid beam of violet destruction.

BOOM!

The impact didn't just parry her, it blew through her defense like a cannonball. She was launched ten meters through the air, her sword flying from her hand as she crashed into the stone at the edge of the arena. She stayed down, her chest heaving as the residual lightning locked her muscles.

Hanyuan stood in the center of the ring, panting slightly as sweat trickled down his chin. The violet arcs of energy slowly receded into the black iron of his spear.

"Bai Hanyuan wins!" the Elder announced, looking at Hanyuan with respect. "Your rank is now 140. As a result, your monthly allowance is increased to 30 Mid-grade Spirit Stones."

Hanyuan offered a respectful bow to both the Elder and his fallen opponent. He mounted Lingxiao and took to the sky, the wind cooling his heated skin.

Upon reaching his estate, he didn't celebrate. He went straight to the Azure Sky Apple tree and sat beneath it. He closed his eyes, his mind replaying the fight, consolidating the experience of the Battle.
