The morning arrived not with the jarring insistence of an alarm, but with the soft, gradual lightening of the sky beyond the villa's floor-to-ceiling windows. Aaron stirred beneath the linen sheets, consciousness returning to him in layers rather than a single abrupt awakening. The sounds of the lake outside — distant birds calling to one another, the whisper of wind moving through the sycamores along the shore, the faint lapping of water against the small dock — filled the room with a tranquility that still felt, after all these months, almost undeserved. There were mornings when he expected to wake up in his old apartment, the hum of a failing refrigerator his only company, the weight of another day of rejection pressing against his chest. Those mornings came less frequently now, but they never fully disappeared.
