Chapter 124 - Chapter 122: The Hand Begins to Pull

Chapter 122: The Hand Begins to Pull

King's Landing, the Red Keep.

Jon Arryn, Hand of the King, worked by candlelight in the quiet hours before dawn. The solar was still, save for the scratching of his quill and the occasional crackle of the dying fire. Before him lay scattered parchments—old birth records, maester's notes, and names of women Robert had bedded over the years.

He had begun this quietly, almost reluctantly. A doubt that had grown into suspicion, and now into cold certainty. The royal children did not look like Baratheons. Not one of them carried the black hair and blue eyes that defined Robert's blood. Joffrey's golden curls, Tommen's soft features, Myrcella's perfect Lannister beauty—they all whispered treason.

Jon Arryn sighed and rubbed his temples. He had started with the simplest questions. Which women had borne Robert children? Where were they now? How many of those children carried the true stamp of the stag?

The answers were already troubling.

A boy in the Crownlands. Another in the Riverlands. Gendry, the bull of a smith's apprentice on the Street of Steel—black hair, fierce blue eyes, strong as his father. Each one a living reminder of what the royal heirs should have been.

He set down his quill. This was no longer mere curiosity. If Cersei's children were not Robert's… the realm stood on the brink of fire and blood.

Jon Arryn did not know how deep the rot went. He did not yet suspect how many eyes watched him. He only knew that the truth had to be uncovered, carefully and quickly.

He would continue alone for now. No ravens. No allies. Not until he was certain.

Winter's Heaven, far beyond the Wall

In the warm glow of the Citadel of Dawn, Jon Snow stood on the highest balcony overlooking his kingdom. Electric lights stretched across the city like a sea of stars. Trains rumbled in the distance. Smoke rose from factories that never slept. His people lived in warmth and abundance.

But Jon's mind was far away.

He had felt it for weeks now—the subtle shift in the world. The timeline he remembered from his old life was beginning. Jon Arryn had started digging. The Hand was investigating Robert's bastards, searching for proof of Baratheon blood. The great game was stirring back to life.

Jon exhaled slowly, breath visible in the cold night air.

"So it begins," he murmured.

He knew exactly where this path led. Jon Arryn's death. Ned coming south. The Lannisters tightening their grip. War. Betrayal. The realm tearing itself apart just as winter truly arrived.

His hands tightened on the stone railing.

He was no longer the powerless bastard watching from the sidelines. He was the King of Winter's Heaven. He had built cities from nothing. He had crushed armies of the dead. He had summoned monsters that made dragons seem small.

And yet…

The south still called to him. His father. His siblings. The family he had left behind years ago.

Ygritte's voice came from behind him, warm and teasing. "You're brooding again, Snow."

She stepped up beside him, slipping an arm around his waist. Jon pulled her closer without thinking, his hand sliding down to squeeze her ass possessively. She leaned into the touch with a soft laugh.

"Something's coming," he said quietly. "The south is waking up. The Hand has started asking dangerous questions about the king's blood."

Ygritte shrugged. "Let them choke on their own mess. We have everything we need here."

Jon smiled faintly, but his eyes remained distant. "For now. But the game they play in King's Landing will spill north eventually. And when it does… Winter's Heaven will not sit idle."

Val appeared moments later, silent as always, her sharp eyes reading the tension on his face. She said nothing, simply joining them at the railing. The three of them stood together, looking out over the glowing heart of his kingdom.

Jon Snow, the White Wolf King, felt the weight of two worlds on his shoulders.

The plot he remembered was beginning.

And this time, he would not watch from the shadows.
