Chapter 122 - Chapter 120: The Spider's Thoughts

Chapter 120: The Spider's Thoughts

The Red Keep was never truly silent, even deep in the night.

Somewhere far below, guards changed shifts with the soft clink of armor. A distant laugh echoed from the servants' quarters. But in the small, sparsely furnished chamber belonging to Lord Varys, Master of Whisperers, only the soft crackle of a single candle disturbed the stillness.

Varys sat alone at his modest table, a fresh scroll from White Harbor unrolled before him. Another report. More witness accounts. More impossible tales. Nothing new, nothing particularly useful for his networks. Yet he read every line with careful attention.

He set the parchment down and leaned back, his soft hands folding together beneath his chin.

Three children.

The thought came unbidden, as it had several times lately.

Viserys Targaryen. Daenerys Targaryen. Jon Snow.

All three had begun with nothing.

Varys rose slowly and walked to the large map of Westeros pinned to the far wall. His slippered feet made almost no sound. He traced a finger from King's Landing northward, past the Neck, past Winterfell, and beyond the Wall into the vast blank parchment that represented the lands of always winter.

Nothing was marked there. No cities. No roads. No castles. Just empty space.

And yet…

He poured himself a small cup of wine and returned to his chair.

Viserys first.

The boy had been eight years old when Robert's Rebellion tore his family apart. Driven from the Red Keep, fleeing across the Narrow Sea with his infant sister and a handful of loyalists. Varys had watched from afar as the proud prince grew into a bitter, angry young man. Dependent on the charity of magisters like Illyrio Mopatis. Still calling himself king. Still dreaming of dragons and iron thrones. Still demanding respect he had never earned.

"A king without a kingdom," Varys murmured to the candlelight.

Viserys had everything a Targaryen should have — ancient blood, a famous name, supporters who whispered of restoration — and yet he possessed nothing real. No army. No gold of his own. No land. Only rage and entitlement.

Varys sighed.

Then there was Daenerys.

Sweet, gentle Daenerys. Born on Dragonstone during a terrible storm as her mother died bringing her into the world. She had known nothing but exile. Following her brother from city to city, always one step ahead of imagined assassins. Still a child, really. Innocent in ways her brother had long ceased to be. Varys felt genuine pity for her. She had no choice in any of it. She was simply born into tragedy.

Two children of House Targaryen. Two exiles. Two souls shaped by loss and flight.

And then…

Jon Snow.

Varys took a slow sip of wine, letting the warmth spread through him.

Jon Snow had not been exiled. He had not been hunted. He had not been robbed of a throne. No one had driven him from his home with fire and sword.

He had simply… left.

At six years old, the boy had already been whispered about in Winterfell — a quiet, unusually clever child. Some called him blessed by the old gods. Lord Eddard Stark had eventually allowed him to go beyond the Wall. Not in disgrace. Not in exile. But with quiet permission.

And from nothing — no ancient name, no dragons, no wealthy patron, no conspiracy — the boy had built a kingdom.

Varys stood again and returned to the map. His finger rested on the empty space beyond the Wall.

No one had given Jon Snow an army. No one had funded him with chests of gold. No one had arranged marriages or alliances on his behalf. No one had whispered plots in his ear.

He had walked into the frozen wilderness with nothing but his own two hands and whatever strange gifts the gods had granted him.

And he had returned — or rather, remained — with a city that glowed through the night. With iron beasts that moved on their own. With ships larger than anything in King's Landing. With a people who loved him not because he demanded it, but because he had given them warmth, food, safety, and purpose.

Varys smiled softly. Not mockingly. Sadly.

"Three children," he whispered. "Three beginnings. Three paths."

Viserys clung to ghosts. He still spoke of reclaiming his father's kingdom, still raged at the usurper, still lived on the generosity and ambitions of others.

Daenerys followed, too young to choose her own fate, carrying the weight of a fallen dynasty on her small shoulders.

But Jon…

Jon had chosen.

He had not reclaimed anything. He had not demanded a crown. He had simply built something new from snow and stone and will.

Varys returned to his chair and poured another cup of wine.

He thought of King Robert Baratheon. A strong man once. A warrior. Not a mad king like Aerys. Not a tyrant. The realm had known peace under him — relative peace, at least. Yet Robert had abandoned ruling for hunting, drinking, and feasting. Corruption grew in the shadows. The great lords played their games. The Small Council bickered.

Varys had always told himself that perhaps a better ruler would come. Perhaps through House Targaryen. Perhaps through careful guidance and long-laid plans.

But now another possibility existed.

A bastard boy who had left Winterfell at six years old had accomplished in the frozen north what Viserys Targaryen, with all the blood of Old Valyria, had failed to do in twenty years of wandering.

Viserys demanded loyalty. Jon inspired it.

Viserys spoke endlessly of crowns. Jon created prosperity.

Viserys claimed he was king. Jon had become one without ever needing to say the word.

Varys leaned back, the candlelight flickering across his smooth, powdered face.

He stared at the northern edge of the map — that vast, empty expanse.

Somewhere beyond that blank parchment, a city shone through the longest nights. Trains moved across iron roads. People prospered in warmth. And a young man sat buried beneath paperwork, building something entirely new.

For the first time in many years, Lord Varys asked himself a question he had never imagined asking.

Not "Can the dragon return?" Not "Can House Targaryen reclaim the Iron Throne?"

But something far simpler.

"What kind of man… builds a kingdom from nothing?"

He smiled into his cup.

And for the first time in twenty years, the Spider found himself wondering whether the answer he had spent his life searching for had never lived across the Narrow Sea at all.
