Chapter 105 - Chapter 103: Victory at the Frontier

Chapter 103: Victory at the Frontier

The battle was over.

For the first time since the dead had appeared, silence returned to Frost Station Seven.

Not complete silence.

The wounded still groaned.

Soldiers still shouted orders.

Scouts still moved across the battlefield.

But compared to the chaos of the previous hours, the frozen valley felt almost peaceful.

Thousands upon thousands of corpses covered the snow.

The dead.

The true dead.

This time they would not rise again.

Not after the White Walker's destruction.

Not after Winter's Heaven had cleared the battlefield.

Tormund stood atop the shattered northern wall.

His armor was stained black.

Blood covered his katana.

Below him, soldiers moved through the battlefield.

Finishing isolated wights.

Gathering dragon glass arrows.

Checking for survivors.

The dead army that had threatened to overwhelm Frost Station Seven had been completely destroyed.

Not pushed back.

Not routed.

Destroyed.

A soldier climbed the wall.

"Commander."

Tormund glanced sideways.

"What?"

The soldier saluted.

"Final report."

Tormund nodded.

The soldier smiled.

"Frost Station Seven secured."

For several seconds, Tormund simply stared across the valley.

Then a grin slowly appeared beneath his beard.

"They held."

Far away.

At Frost Station Nine.

The battle had ended as well.

The relief army had arrived.

Five thousand soldiers of Winter's Heaven had smashed into the dead from the south.

The White Walker leading that army had watched the battle unfold.

Then something unexpected happened.

The creature withdrew.

Not because it feared death.

Not because it feared the soldiers.

Because its purpose had already been completed.

The army of the dead began retreating north.

The soldiers of Winter's Heaven advanced relentlessly.

Cutting down every wight they could reach.

The battlefield became a slaughter.

Hours later, Frost Station Nine still stood.

Damaged.

Bloodied.

But standing.

At Frost Station Twelve, the same story unfolded.

The defenders had nearly exhausted their arrows.

Their walls had been breached in multiple places.

Yet they endured.

Long enough.

The relief force arrived.

The dead retreated.

The soldiers pursued.

And by sunset, Frost Station Twelve remained standing.

The flag of Winter's Heaven still flew above its walls.

For the first time since the attacks began—

Every station survived.

Inside Winter's Heaven.

The Communication Center erupted.

Operators cheered.

Officers laughed.

Some openly celebrated.

Radio reports arrived one after another.

"Frost Station Seven secured."

"Frost Station Nine secured."

"Frost Station Twelve secured."

Factories.

Schools.

Markets.

Workshops.

Everywhere.

People smiled.

People celebrated.

People embraced one another.

The dead had attacked.

And Winter's Heaven had won.

Yet inside the Hall of Governance, Jon remained calm.

He listened to every report.

Every casualty.

Every victory.

Every detail.

Then he quietly asked:

"Total losses?"

The room became silent.

The celebration faded.

An officer stepped forward.

Reading from a report.

The numbers were far lower than expected.

Yet every death still mattered.

Jon listened carefully.

Remembering every name.

Every soldier.

Every giant.

Every life.

Victory never came without cost.

Several hours later, another report arrived.

A scout.

Breathing heavily after riding without rest.

"My King."

Jon looked up.

The scout bowed.

"The dead are retreating."

The room immediately became quiet.

Alex frowned.

"Retreating?"

The scout nodded.

"All fronts report the same thing."

Maps were quickly updated.

Markers moved north.

Away from the stations.

Away from Winter's Heaven.

Away from the frontier.

The dead were leaving.

Tormund reported through radio shortly afterward.

"They're pulling back."

Jon remained silent.

Tormund continued.

"Not running."

"Not panicking."

"Just leaving."

Jon looked toward the northern frontier on the map.

Then nodded.

"I expected that."

Because this attack had never been intended to conquer Winter's Heaven.

Now he was certain.

The White Walkers had come to test them.

To measure them.

To understand them.

And now they had their answer.

Far to the north.

Beyond the stations.

Beyond the patrol routes.

Beyond the lands claimed by Winter's Heaven.

The frozen wilderness stretched endlessly beneath a dark sky.

Snowstorms moved across ancient ice fields.

The world became colder.

Wilder.

Deadlier.

Two White Walkers moved silently through the snow.

Neither spoke.

They could not.

Neither needed to.

The memories of the battle replayed endlessly within their minds.

The defenders.

The giant.

The wolf.

The black blades.

The impossible army.

Everything.

One White Walker remembered Frost Station Seven.

Only a handful of defenders.

Yet they had fought for hours.

Hours.

Against an army of the dead.

The creature did not understand why.

Ordinary humans feared death.

These humans had not.

Then another memory surfaced.

The black blades.

Everywhere.

Thousands of them.

The White Walker remembered the moment its brother's spear failed.

The black blade had not shattered.

It had endured.

Then it had killed.

Another memory followed.

The relief army.

Thousands of warriors appearing seemingly from nowhere.

The defenders had been alone.

Then suddenly—

An army had arrived.

The White Walker did not understand how.

It only knew what it had witnessed.

The impossible speed disturbed it.

Another memory.

The giant.

Massive.

Powerful.

Crushing dozens of dead with every swing.

The creature had encountered giants before.

But not like that.

Not fighting alongside humans.

Not following a human king.

Then another memory.

The warriors themselves.

Their strange breathing.

Their strength.

Their speed.

Their discipline.

The White Walker did not understand the technique.

It simply knew the result.

These humans were stronger than ordinary men.

Far stronger.

The creature continued walking.

Snow crunching beneath frozen feet.

Its thoughts never stopped.

The battle replayed again.

And again.

And again.

The death of its brother.

The collapse of thousands of wights.

The impossible army.

The kingdom beyond the frontier.

For centuries, humans had been prey.

Weak.

Divided.

Predictable.

This kingdom was none of those things.

The White Walker looked south.

Not toward Winter's Heaven itself.

It was far beyond the horizon.

Far beyond forests, valleys, settlements, and railways the creature could not comprehend.

Instead it looked toward the frontier.

Toward the stations.

Toward the lands defended by Jon Snow.

The attack had failed.

Completely.

The probing force had failed.

One White Walker had died.

Entire armies had been destroyed.

And the kingdom remained standing.

The White Walker continued north.

Carrying those memories.

Carrying those observations.

Carrying the image of a kingdom unlike any it had ever encountered.

A kingdom of giants.

Of wolves.

Of black blades.

Of warriors who did not fear death.

And somewhere beyond the frontier...

A king called Jon Snow.

The victory belonged to Winter's Heaven.

But both sides now understood the truth.

This war was far from over.
