Chapter 1 - THE END AND THE START

I looked at him from across the room, his head leaning against the wall, his eyes closed. A smile played across his lips. His thick eyelashes fluttered open, revealing his large, innocent eyes.

But as they settled on me, they were filled with scorn. I looked him straight in the eye, my face showing exactly how I felt: absolute disgust.

I looked away from him. I hated him so much, this stranger that had embedded himself into my class and invaded my home. Being in a room with him was enough to suffocate me. Leon was my childhood friend, but I wished he had never come.

I remember the day he left. My name was like a forbidden fruit to his lips. He never said goodbye.

Right after class, I just packed my things and walked out. Outside, I could hear the squeals and shouts of the young duchesses and heiresses. I walked out to see many students staring at Leon, who was sitting in a carriage like some prince charming. What a show-off.

"Melody, get in and let's go," he said in a commanding tone. He dares to command me.

A lot of eyes turned to me, but I ignored them and him and started walking home. A lot of people were surprised, and some even gasped at seeing the heiress of the LAYWOOD family go home on foot, but do I seem like I care? Hell no!!

I heard Leon calling after me. Of course, I didn't respond. Even his voice nauseated me.

THIRD-PERSON POV

As she disappeared from view, Leon sat back in the carriage and leaned his head against the seat.

"Go to the LAYWOOD mansion," he ordered the coachman.

Then he sat with his eyes closed.

"Who was that girl?" a strange yet soothing voice rose from him, quite different from how he spoke before.

"A childhood friend," he answered.

"Why do you ask, Leo?" he asked.

"Just curious," Leo responded.

"By the way, what's her name?" Leo asked.

"Melody," Leon responded nonchalantly.

"Heh... Melody."

He repeated the name softly. His eyes flickered open, revealing dark red eyes, which then flickered back to the lovely green, making it all look like a dream, as though it had never happened.

MELODY'S POV

I walked as fast as I could so that Leon wouldn't catch up to me. When I arrived, the guards looked shocked upon seeing me walking.

Come on, I'm not that lazy.

I gave the ones up front quick nods before moving on, totally ignoring their expressions. I went straight to Father's study.

I made my way to the Wingham Estate. Home. I looked at the large mansion flourishing before my eyes, with its vibrant mini gardens surrounding it, beautiful roses climbing the brick walls.

I walked inside, my face contorted with anger, bypassing the guards who gave more salutes, seemingly puzzled as to why I, the heiress, was walking home.

Don't look at me like that. I'm not that lazy, I thought as I walked by, but it was all his fault.

My father, the man I had grown to hate so much, and my mother, the woman I never knew but hated with all my heart. I was named after her but refused to inherit her nature, to watch people suffer because of me and be happy.

She was disgusting and cold, without pity. Shame was her only form of self-awareness. She caused men to commit suicide to end family lines just for her beauty, but she was called loveless.

I looked exactly like her. Blue eyes, innocent look, the petite figure, the scheming witch. And that's all my father could see when he looked at me.

I went to Father's study, my anger overflowing. I banged on his door and heard his familiar voice telling me to enter. Upon entering, I noticed his eyes never once left the documents. He never once looked me in the eye.

As though he was afraid Mother would come back when he did.

But I kept on talking, asking him why I had to marry Louis, but he ignored me, and I just talked, pleading.

I could still hear his response.

"That's all I can do for you."

I could feel the tears rushing down my face as I rushed to my room.
