Selenne saw the smile first.
It appeared at entirely the wrong moment.
Lucavion stood near the center of the formation with three separate manifestations trembling around him, sweat dampening the hair along his temple while the chamber's ambient mana pulled at each structure from a different direction. His breathing had grown deeper over the last several sequences, and the sphere above his shoulder had only just recovered from a partial collapse.
Then he looked at Marcus.
And smiled.
Selenne's eyes narrowed.
'What did you notice?'
The thought came almost immediately.
Lucavion did very little accidentally when another person was involved. He might appear careless, frivolous, even needlessly provocative, but there was usually something beneath the performance. Yesterday had demonstrated that often enough.
His gaze remained on Marcus for another heartbeat before returning to the manifestations surrounding him.
The chamber shifted again.
Selenne felt it this time.
