The boy before her had spoken with his eyes lowered toward his own hand. Hard calluses pressed against his palm where his fingers had closed, and for a brief moment the loose posture he carried through the Academy had disappeared beneath something harsher.
Then Lucavion looked around the chamber.
Several students had turned toward him. A noble boy near the third row leaned closer to his companion, waiting for whatever theatrical remark usually followed whenever Lucavion allowed a conversation to become too serious.
His mouth curved.
"Or perhaps I am simply a genius," he added. "Some things come naturally."
A few laughs moved through the room.
The tension loosened with them.
Selenne lowered her quill and wrote beneath the previous response.
Practical development primarily necessity-driven.
