Bai Yu Ning led Phoenix through the towering entrance and behind a wall of living bamboo and pale gold glass. The roar of The Majestic Bonghwang softened behind them, replaced by filtered air, muted footsteps, and the quiet hum of privacy fields. Beyond the final door, the contract review room waited: polished, calm, and far too harmless-looking to be trusted.

Three people were already inside, each with a tablet ready: a production legal representative, a Dragon's Breath Industries liaison, and a neutral contract witness certified by the Intergalactic Entertainment Bureau.

Phoenix took in the room in one glance. Comfortable chairs. Privacy field active. Recording crystal in the corner. Tea service untouched. Two tablets waited on the table: one for review, one for signing.

Everything about the room was polished, professional, and dangerous in the quiet way contracts often were.

Phoenix let the room settle around him before taking his seat. The chair was comfortable enough to encourage trust, the lighting soft enough to flatter whoever sat beneath it, and the tea set expensive enough to imply hospitality. None of that changed what the room was. It was a battlefield with better upholstery, and every weapon had been translated into clauses, permissions, and polite smiles.

Abeoji's warning returned to him with almost physical clarity: read every line, especially the ones people call standard. Standard only meant enough people had been pressured into accepting it before you. Phoenix set Nuna's snack box carefully beside his tablet and felt something inside him shift. Guest, contestant, performer—those were the roles production expected. Negotiator was the one he chose.

The shift was quiet, but it steadied him more than any encouraging word could have. Phoenix had spent too many lives learning that smiles could be cages and kindness could arrive with hidden conditions. In this room, he did not need to be charming first. He needed to be awake. Every clause he understood was one less place for someone else to put a hand on the shape of his life and call it procedure.

Bai Yu Ning stepped to his side. "Phoenix-ssi, this is Senior Legal Representative Ma Liren from production, Liaison Verin Cho from Dragon's Breath Industries, and Witness Hessa Vail, certified through the Intergalactic Entertainment Bureau."

Phoenix bowed politely. "Thank you for receiving me. I will be in your care during the review."

Senior Representative Ma smiled with calm professional warmth. "The honor is ours, Phoenix-ssi. We have prepared the standard contestant contract, appearance agreement, confidentiality agreement, medical-response consent, prize-distribution terms, and image-use permissions. We will walk through each section before you sign."

Liaison Verin Cho's tablet bore the Dragon's Breath insignia in the corner: a stylized dragon exhaling a crescent of gold flame. The mark was understated, almost tasteful, but the placement was not accidental. Dragon's Breath was listed as a sponsor, yet its representative sat at the table with the ease of someone whose company had more than branding rights at stake.

Phoenix filed that away without looking directly at it for too long. A sponsor who cared about prize language, private ship models, and contestant handling was not only buying visibility. They were shaping the environment. Whether that meant risk or protection remained to be seen, but either way, it deserved attention.

"Thank you," Phoenix said, taking the review tablet. "I will read them myself as well."

The room grew just a fraction quieter.

Solaris stirred through the bond, amused. 'They expected Mama to be pretty and obedient.'

'Then this will be educational,' Phoenix replied.

He began reading. Not skimming. Reading. Clause by clause, line by line, appendix by appendix. His smile stayed soft and his posture relaxed, but his attention sharpened until the room seemed to quiet around it. Every few minutes, his finger paused over a section long enough to make one of the representatives shift.

The first concern appeared in the image-use section. "This wording gives production permission to use unaired footage, behind-the-scenes material, and private preparation recordings for supplemental promotion without additional approval," Phoenix said mildly. "I would like that narrowed."

Representative Ma blinked once. "That is standard."

"I am certain it is." Phoenix's smile did not change. "Public filming material is one thing. Private preparation material requires notice and approval before release."

Bai Yu Ning's eyes flicked toward him with open approval before returning to her tablet. The neutral witness made a note.

The second concern surfaced in the medical-response section. Phoenix's finger stilled over one clause. "This allows production medical staff to administer emergency treatment, stabilizers, suppressants, or calming agents if I am judged to be at risk due to pheromone distress." He looked up. "Who makes that judgment?"

The words looked sterile on the screen, but his body understood them too well. Treatment. Stabilizers. Suppressants. Calming agents. So many soft names for the same terrifying possibility: someone deciding his fear, distress, or biology made his consent optional. A cold thread slid down his spine before he breathed it away.

Representative Ma opened her mouth, but Phoenix continued before she could answer. "Unless I am unconscious, physically incapacitated, or explicitly request assistance, no suppressant or calming agent should be administered without my verbal consent. I am a dominant omega, not a production liability."

Bai Yu Ning did not interrupt, but her tablet angled subtly toward him. A short note glowed at the edge of the screen where only Phoenix could easily read it: Ask for emergency witness confirmation.

Warmth flickered through Phoenix's chest, quick and unexpected. Bai Yu Ning had not taken over. She had not spoken for him. She had simply placed the next useful stone beneath his foot and trusted him to step on it.

Being protected like that felt strange enough to ache. Not managed. Not silenced. Not spoken over for his own good. Protected. Bai Yu Ning left the choice in his hands and strengthened the ground beneath him instead. Phoenix did not know what to do with the softness that rose in response, so he folded it carefully behind his smile and kept going.

Phoenix looked to Witness Hessa Vail. "If emergency judgment is required, I want that decision documented by the attending medical officer and confirmed by an independent witness whenever possible. If immediate action prevents that, the reason must be logged afterward and made available to me."

The Dragon's Breath liaison straightened slightly.

Solaris made a pleased little sound. 'Mama's claws are showing.'

'Politely,' Phoenix replied.

Witness Hessa Vail adjusted her glasses. "That revision is reasonable. I will mark it."

The Dragon's Breath liaison's gaze sharpened, but not with impatience. Interest, Phoenix thought. Maybe even approval. That was more unsettling than resistance. Companies did not admire contestants for protecting themselves unless someone behind that company preferred intelligent prey—or valuable allies.

The third concern waited in the prize clause. Phoenix tapped one line. "The winner's prize includes the option to choose from select unreleased Dragon's Breath private ship models. I would like the available model categories listed in an addendum before signing final prize acceptance later."

"Dragon's Breath usually classifies unreleased models by performance bracket, interior customization, and security grade," Verin Cho said carefully. "The exact inventory may shift before prize distribution, but the model categories can be listed."

"Security grade?" Phoenix repeated, mild as tea steam.

Verin's smile did not move, but his eyes did. "Some clients require privacy features beyond standard luxury travel."

Phoenix returned the smile. "Then I would especially like the categories listed."

Liaison Verin Cho smiled. "You noticed the wording."

"I was transported here in one of the models, was I not?" Phoenix asked.

The liaison's smile deepened. "A limited demonstration model, yes."

"Then I would prefer not to sign prize language that hides the real selection behind the word select."

For the first time, Representative Ma looked less like a legal professional guiding a contestant and more like a woman reassessing the entire room.

Phoenix moved to the confidentiality agreement next. "This is acceptable," he said after a moment. "However, I want the clause expanded to protect against staff leaking health information, secondary-sex status, scent-profile commentary, dressing-room footage, private meals, or personal communications."

Representative Ma nodded slowly. "That level of specificity is unusual."

"So are celebrity gossip markets," Phoenix replied. "I would rather prevent confusion before someone profits from it."

He did not say the rest aloud: that gossip markets loved omegas best when those omegas could be packaged as fragile, desirable, unstable, or scandalous. He had no intention of allowing production to turn his body chemistry into flavor text for audience speculation. If viewers wanted to judge him, they could judge his food, his skill, his choices, and the face he decided to show them. Nothing more.

Bai Yu Ning covered her mouth with one hand. It might have been professionalism. It might have been laughter.

Solaris did not bother pretending. 'Mama is terrifying. I am so proud.'

The final concern appeared in the pairing and production-interaction section. Phoenix read it twice. Then a third time. "Contestants may be assigned collaborative cooking segments, promotional photos, and interview pairings with celebrity participants according to production discretion," he said. "That is expected. However, this line about 'encouraged emotional chemistry' is vague."

Representative Ma looked pained. "It refers to standard variety-show interaction."

"Then it can say that." Phoenix set the tablet down gently. "I will not sign language that could pressure me into flirtation, skinship, false romantic implication, or personal vulnerability beyond what I choose to offer on camera."

For one breath, no one spoke. Then Witness Hessa Vail gave a single approving nod. "That revision should be entered."

Phoenix folded his hands neatly over the tablet. "I am not difficult to work with. I prefer clarity before cameras make misunderstandings profitable."

This time, Bai Yu Ning did smile. Representative Ma exhaled softly, then began entering revisions. "Understood, Phoenix-ssi. We will update the language accordingly."

Bai Yu Ning added one final notation of her own. "Access logs for all medical, scent-profile, styling, and private footage files should be visible to Phoenix-ssi or to me as his assigned support." Her tone remained respectful, but there was steel under the silk. "That way, if a file is viewed outside the approved chain, we will know immediately."

Representative Ma looked from Bai Yu Ning to Phoenix, then entered the addition without argument. Phoenix kept his expression composed, but his respect for Bai Yu Ning settled deeper. She had not only promised protection; she understood where leaks began.

The review took longer than expected. Phoenix did not apologize.

By the time the revised contract returned, every flagged clause had been clarified, narrowed, or moved into an approval-required category. The document was still demanding, still intrusive in the way entertainment contracts tended to be, but it no longer treated Phoenix's body, image, privacy, or secondary status as production property.

Only then did Phoenix sign.

The neutral witness sealed the document with a certified stamp. "Contract review complete. Contestant Phoenix has signed under full awareness of the revised terms."

Phoenix set the stylus down. Only then did his shoulders ease, and even then, only by the slightest degree.

For a brief moment, he allowed himself to feel the shape of the victory. It was not dramatic. No one had raised their voice. No one had slammed a hand on the table. Yet the room had changed around him all the same. They had entered expecting a beautiful contestant who would smile, sign, and be managed. They were leaving with revised clauses, access logs, documented consent limits, and a much clearer understanding that Phoenix did not confuse courtesy with surrender.

The realization should have felt triumphant. Instead, it left him tired in a way applause never saw. Winning safety one clause at a time was still winning, but it was also exhausting to know safety had to be negotiated at all. He let himself feel that for one breath only, then gathered the feeling up and tucked it where the cameras would not find it.

Solaris hummed through the bond, deeply satisfied. 'Paperwork battlefield survived.'

'The day is still young,' Phoenix replied, gathering himself again before relief could make him careless.

Bai Yu Ning stepped closer as the representatives gathered their tablets, her voice low enough not to carry. "You handled that beautifully."

Phoenix looked at the sealed contract and smiled faintly. "Abeoji told me to read every line. I have learned not to ignore good survival advice."

"Abeoji is a wise man."

"He usually is," Phoenix admitted. "Please do not tell him I said that."

Her lips twitched. "Never."

A soft chime sounded at the door. The preliminary briefing was ready.

Phoenix glanced once at the sealed contract, then at the snack box still waiting beside his hand. The paperwork battlefield was over, but victory did not make the next step easier. Contracts had rules. Cameras had appetites.

He picked up Nuna's snack box, smoothed one invisible wrinkle from his sleeve, and let his polite smile settle back into place.

If production wanted Phoenix, then Phoenix would give them exactly as much as he chose.

No more. No less.

When Bai Yu Ning opened the door, Phoenix followed her into the next room.
