The afternoon sun bathed the pediatric ward in a warm golden glow.
Laughter echoed from the playroom as volunteers entertained the children with puppet shows and magic tricks.
For a little while...
The hospital felt less frightening.
Celina carried a tray into Room 312.
Daniel looked much brighter than the previous day.
The little boy smiled as soon as he saw her.
"Miss Celina!"
She laughed.
"So, our brave prince is smiling today."
"I finished all the soup."
"I heard."
She gently ruffled his hair.
"I'm very proud of you."
Daniel leaned closer and whispered,
"Can you make it again tomorrow?"
Her heart melted.
"If the doctors say yes..."
"I'll make it."
His mother stood and bowed slightly.
"I don't know how to thank you."
Celina shook her head.
"You don't have to."
"Seeing him smile is enough."
The woman wiped away a tear.
"You're a blessing."
Celina smiled softly before leaving the room.
She never noticed the pair of eyes following her from the corridor.
Aaron.
He had returned to finish reviewing several renovation plans, but instead...
He found himself watching her again.
James noticed.
"She has that effect on people."
Aaron looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"Patients trust her."
"The staff admire her."
"And children refuse to go home without saying goodbye."
James smiled.
"Kindness is contagious."
Aaron remained silent.
Later that afternoon...
The staff cafeteria buzzed with conversation.
Aaron rarely ate there.
There was always another meeting.
Another report.
Another flight.
Today...
For reasons he couldn't explain...
He walked in.
Ethan looked surprised.
"You want to eat here?"
Aaron simply nodded.
The cafeteria manager hurried over nervously.
"Mr. Steel, we can prepare something special."
"No."
Aaron looked toward the serving counter.
"I'll have what everyone else is having."
Moments later, one of the kitchen staff approached.
"We're sorry, sir."
"The regular meals are finished."
"But Miss Celina prepared extra vegetable soup for one of the children."
"There is a little left."
Aaron remembered Daniel's smile.
"The same soup?"
"Yes, sir."
"I'll have it."
A few minutes later...
The simple bowl was placed before him.
No expensive garnish.
No luxury ingredients.
Just warm homemade soup and freshly baked bread.
Aaron took one spoonful.
Then another.
He stopped.
The flavor was simple...
Yet comforting.
It reminded him of something he hadn't felt in years.
Home.
He quietly finished every last drop.
Ethan stared in disbelief.
"You actually cleaned the bowl."
Aaron placed the spoon down.
"It's... good."
Ethan nearly laughed.
Coming from Aaron Steel...
That was the equivalent of a standing ovation.
As evening approached...
Celina finished her shift and walked toward the staff exit.
She was surprised to see Aaron standing near the hospital garden, looking at the roses planted along the pathway.
She hesitated.
Should she greet him?
Before she could decide...
Aaron turned.
"Miss Bakers."
"Mr. Steel."
A brief silence followed.
"I had your soup today."
Her eyes widened.
"My soup?"
"The one you made for Daniel."
She looked embarrassed.
"I'm sorry."
"It wasn't meant for you."
"I know."
A faint smile appeared on Aaron's face.
"It was excellent."
For a moment...
Celina simply stared.
Had the famous Aaron Steel...
Just complimented her cooking?
"My mother taught me that recipe."
She spoke almost unconsciously.
"She always said..."
"'Food made with love reaches the heart before it reaches the stomach.'"
Aaron's expression softened.
"She sounds like a remarkable woman."
Celina smiled sadly.
"She was."
A breeze swept through the garden.
Neither of them spoke.
Yet...
The silence no longer felt awkward.
As Celina walked away, Aaron watched her disappear beyond the gate.
For the first time in many years...
He realized he was looking forward...
To seeing someone again.
