Chapter 1020 - WM 93

Chapter 0560 Emperor Tsuin

-x-X-x-

Ryo, riding on Andalusia, and Abel, riding on Feiwan, were being escorted from front and rear by the White Flame Army.

They were not being forcibly taken along; both Ryo and Abel had agreed to go.

Their destination was the Imperial Palace.

"Captain Li Chu."

"Yes, Your Grace."

"Today is the wedding ceremony of Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen, right? Isn't His Majesty the Emperor extremely busy?"

"Yes. His schedule should be packed down to the minute."

Captain Li Chu of the White Flame Army replied, nodding to Ryo's question.

"Even so, he asked to have me brought in?"

"Yes… The wedding ceremony actually began at dawn—or rather, before dawn. Though Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen are at the center, the ceremony is held under His Majesty's name, so he attends most of it. So yes, he is extremely busy."

"Does that mean he wants to meet during a break in the ceremony?"

"Most likely. If all goes according to plan, the first half should finish before noon. In the afternoon, the Prince and Princess will enter seclusion in the Sacred Hall within the palace until nightfall."

"So, he wants to have lunch together?"

"No, today His Majesty will not have lunch. Nor will the Prince and Princess."

"What in the world…"

Apparently, the prince's wedding is an austere affair.

"Therefore, to be honest, it's unclear when you'll be able to meet him…"

At that, Captain Li Chu paused mid-sentence.

Then, as if having made up his mind, he raised his head and continued.

"There's a chance it may be tomorrow."

"What…?!"

A shocking prediction was delivered.

"In that case, what about our lunch and dinner…?"

"Eh? Oh, well, I believe those will be prepared…"

Captain Li Chu responded somewhat flatly to Ryo, whose face was filled with despair.

"Ah, that's a relief."

"Um…"

Ryo looked genuinely relieved, while Li Chu was left a bit puzzled.

Only Abel, who seemed to understand everything, simply shook his head silently.

The two, under the protection of the White Flame Army, entered the Imperial Palace for the first time.

In Darwei, the term 'Imperial Palace' refers to a vast area.

Within it are numerous 'castles' and 'residences'.

At its core lies the Forbidden Castle, where the Emperor resides and where the center of political power is located.

To compare it to 21st-century Japan, Nagatacho would be the Imperial Palace, and the Prime Minister's Office would be the Forbidden Castle.

The entire Nagatacho area is surrounded by tall walls, with advanced alchemical and physical security systems in place… that illustrates just how impressive Darwei's economy and technology must be.

Due to the wedding, the entire Forbidden Castle was nearly off-limits.

However, the two were granted special entry through the West Flower Gate and were led to a building nearby called the 'West White Hall'.

Naturally, the security within the Forbidden Castle was stricter than ever.

Yet wherever the White Flame Army passed, all soldiers bowed their heads in respect.

"The White Flame Army must be highly ranked."

Ryo commented with unfiltered honesty.

"I-I'm honored. We are the Emperor's direct unit known as the 'Imperial Tomb Guard'. There are only 200 of us, divided into four units of 50, so we're small in number, but our military status is extremely high."

Captain Li Chu said, both humble and proud.

Indeed, in Fenmu, they had surrounded Ryo and Abel without him noticing, and now they moved in perfect unison as guards, truly deserving of the term elite.

"So that's why His Majesty commanded the White Flame Army to bring me here?"

"That could be part of it. Escorting someone of your status, Duke, would not be considered a slight if done by us. But perhaps more importantly, we were the ones who reported that 'Duke Rondo of the Kingdom of Knightley' paid respects in Fenmu…"

"I see."

It made sense that the presence of a top-ranking foreign duke acting on behalf of his king to pay respects at the imperial tomb would be reported to the capital.

Looking back, it was obvious.

Yet until now, both Ryo and Abel had completely forgotten about it…

The room they were shown into was extremely luxurious.

Even the vases and calligraphy on display looked high-end.

They were told this was one of the rooms used to host foreign dignitaries.

"Foreign guests do not attend the wedding ceremony itself. However, at the banquet to be held two days from now, after the public presentation of the couple to the citizens, foreign envoys and diplomatic representatives will give greetings. So, on that day, this West White Hall will be packed."

Captain Li Chu explained as he guided them.

"If you tell the maids assigned to this hall, they will prepare anything you need. Also, we White Flame Army soldiers have been assigned to protect you two, so we're stationed around this room. Please let us know if you need anything."

"Thank you."

Now alone in the room were Ryo and Abel.

"Abel, your name is Albert for the time being."

"Uh, right."

"You have no right to complain. You forgot your identification…"

"I know. It's my fault for not wearing it."

Abel waved a hand dismissively at Ryo's words.

"How dare you speak so humbly yet act so casually!"

"Ryo, this tea is delicious."

Abel casually brushed off Ryo's scolding.

"In any case, we're in trouble."

"Hm? What's the problem now?"

"You truly don't understand the dire situation we're in!"

"Dire?"

Ryo sighed, while Abel tilted his head and sipped his tea.

"Next, we'll be summoned by His Majesty. But when we arrive, we'll be surrounded by 50,000 Imperial Guards. Then the Emperor will declare, 'Foolish Duke Rondo, let your life end here in the imperial capital!' "

"…"

"Captain Li Chu and the White Flame Army will surely protect us to the end. But we'll be outnumbered. One by one, they'll fall… In the end, we'll be captured and dragged before Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen, where we'll be executed! 'Let these corpses mark the beginning of your union!' the Emperor will proclaim, and our heads will be chopped off… oh, what a tragedy."

"As expected of Ryo."

Ryo shook his head sadly. But Abel, on the other hand, nodded with admiration.

"Was there something admirable in that?"

"No, just impressed as always by your imagination… or should I say delusion."

"Delusion?! How rude!"

Abel stated, and Ryo protested.

"To prepare for the worst and do your best. That's a quote from the politician Disraeli. I dedicate it to you!"

"So that's the worst-case scenario you're imagining?"

"Eh? Y-Yes…isn't it the same for you?"

Abel's expression said Ryo's worst was still too naive.

"The worst I imagine is that the entire palace is wiped out by a wide-area destruction spell."

"…Excuse me?"

"You know, like that spell used by that empire explosive blaze magician you hate— sudden attack, nobody notices, and the whole palace gets obliterated."

"If that happens, I'll notice! And I'll smash that fire attack to bits!"

Apparently, the concept of a "worst-case scenario" varies greatly between individuals…

While they were having that conversation, it became lunchtime.

After a knock, Captain Li Chu entered.

"Duke, His Majesty will see you now."

"Oh…"

"He asked me to apologize in advance for not having much time."

"No problem."

Ryo paused briefly, then muttered just loud enough for Abel to hear.

"Even so, I won't let my guard down."

Apparently, Ryo's earlier fantasy was still running in his head…

Abel alone shook his head in disbelief.

They were taken to a building located far to the north within the Forbidden Castle.

It seemed the Emperor was taking a brief rest between his morning and afternoon schedule.

And during that short window, he wished to meet Duke Rondo.

"Your Majesty, I have brought Duke Rondo."

"Let him in."

Ryo and Abel entered the room after being allowed through.

Ryo walked in front, with Abel trailing slightly behind him.

Apparently, word had already been passed along, as none of the guards made any move to stop them.

Ryo didn't know the proper etiquette for addressing the Emperor in Darwei.

So, he gave the most formal bow used in the Kingdom of Knightley.

"I am Ryo Mihara, Duke Rondo of the Kingdom of Knightley."

"I am Tsuin Tsao, Emperor of Darwei. I've heard you are the Premier Duke and royal representative. Please, have a seat."

Ryo sat down in the chair he was offered. Abel remained standing a short distance away.

From what Ryo had heard from Boffo of the Bosuntar Kingdom's Censorate, one did not normally sit in the Emperor's presence unless it was a banquet or some very special occasion…

Was it because he was representing Knightley's king?

Ryo's first impression of Emperor Tsuin was that he looked worn out.

Not necessarily sick… but for the ruler of a major world power, he lacked vitality.

He didn't have the commanding strength of the former Emperor Rupert of the Debuhi Empire, nor the piercing gaze of the former king of the Union, Roberto Pirlo.

Still, his face did not look dull or foolish.

People might say, can you really tell intelligence just by someone's face? But with enough experience, you can get a decent sense.

People with dull faces, no matter how loudly they shout, "I'm the boss!" tend to do foolish things… and eventually, their businesses start to collapse.

Even Ryo, who didn't consider himself to have all that much experience, had learned to read that much.

And by that instinct, the emperor in front of him didn't seem foolish.

Just a man who had lost the will to do much of anything.

He looked to be in his mid-fifties.

But his almost completely white hair made him look older and more fatigued than his age.

"When I received a report from Li Chu of the White Flame Army that you had visited Fenmu, I could hardly believe it… yet you are the very Duke sung of in that bard's song…"

"I only recently heard that song clearly for the first time… and honestly, it was incredibly embarrassing."

"Is that so? Ah—hahaha!"

Ryo gave his honest, down-to-earth reaction.

Which made Emperor Tsuin laugh heartily.

"I understand that you're deliberately being approachable. I'm guessing you looked into my schedule beforehand. I appreciate the thought."

"Oh, not at all."

"I heard that Li Chu experienced dizziness from a visible pressure in Fenmu."

"…He was probably imagining things."

"No, if one listens to that bard's song, it seems quite believable."

In truth, Ryo had intentionally projected 'pressure' while in Fenmu.

Captain Li Chu must have nearly been overwhelmed by it.

"Someday, I'd like to experience that myself, in top condition."

"Surely you jest…"

The emperor said it jokingly, and Ryo gave a wry smile in return.

After sharing a good laugh, Emperor Tsuin glanced toward the edge of the room.

The attendants, equivalent to chamberlains and pages in the central countries, bowed their heads.

Their gesture likely meant, "Time's up".

It seemed the emperor's schedule truly was packed to the minute.

"The reason I had you brought here is because I'd like to invite you as a guest of honor."

"A guest of honor? You mean the reception following the public presentation to the imperial citizens in two days?"

"Oh, you already know about that? Then this will be quick. Yes, that very reception. Envoys from neighboring nations will be attending. If the Duke Rondo—already immortalized in song by bards—were to attend, it would surely leave a wonderful memory for the prince and princess. What do you say?"

"It would be an honor to attend. I gladly accept."

"Excellent, it's settled then!"

Ryo's acceptance made Emperor Tsuin clap his hands and nod in satisfaction.

The weariness that had clouded his expression earlier now seemed to lift, if only slightly.

The Emperor likely felt he had secured the perfect surprise for the prince and princess.

Ryo himself was curious to see their surprised faces—he had no reason to decline.

"I'll have Li Chu handle the details. You're staying at the Ryusen Residence, yes? Of course, if you'd prefer, we can prepare quarters for you within the palace."

"No, the Ryusen Residence will do just fine. You see… I've actually been working as an adventurer."

"An adventurer? You, Duke Rondo? Well, with your magical prowess, I suppose it's not out of the question…"

"I've been thoroughly enjoying the imperial capital."

"I see. I understand that. I, too, long for such freedom."

"Hard to come by in high positions, isn't it?"

Having seen what Abel endured, Ryo understood the limitations well.

He noticed Abel behind him giving a small nod in agreement.

"And as an adventurer… I've actually been hired by Count Von Debout of Matan."

"Truly?!"

Emperor Tsuin was visibly surprised by Ryo's statement.

Then, as if remembering something—

"Von Debout is currently…"

"Yes, imprisoned in maximum security for that incident involving Count Roche Ten of Bashu."

"That was a murky affair… hmm, if it weren't for the laws, I would release Von Debout here and now, for your sake."

"I understand."

"But rest assured. An amnesty will be granted in celebration of the prince's wedding. Von Debout is to be included in it."

"Is that true?!"

Ryo's voice cracked with joy.

"Indeed. The release will be announced tomorrow. Feel free to pass the word to his retainers."

"Thank you so much! I'll go to them right after this!"

"The investigation will continue through the Censorate. There still seems to be more beneath the surface."

That last remark, spoken softly, didn't reach Ryo's ears—he was too overjoyed to notice.

But at the very least, it was good news.

-x-X-x-

The day after the wedding ceremony of the Sixth Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen.

There were no official events scheduled for today.

However, the entire Imperial Palace was bustling with activity.

Preparations were underway for tomorrow's public introduction of the newlyweds and the celebratory banquet for the citizens of the imperial capital.

In front of a certain place adjacent to the palace, a group of people had gathered, eagerly awaiting the moment to come.

That place was the Censorate.

Among the gathered were Wei Fon and the retainers of Count Matan, Von Debout—along with Ryo and Abel.

Of course, the amnesty being granted today was not only for Von Debout.

But among those awaiting it, none matched the intensity and fervor of Wei Fon and his companions.

At 10:00 a.m.

The inner gates of the Censorate opened.

The first person to emerge was…

"My lord!"

Wei Fon and the others instantly knelt.

Ryo and Abel also bowed their heads.

"I've made you worry."

Though a bit worn out, Von Debout appeared with firm steps and even a smile— alive and well.

At the inner gate, Secretary Shao and others stood watching.

Ryo and Abel bowed toward Secretary Shao.

Who responded with a small wave and a smile.

In that moment, happiness filled the air.

The group returned to the 'Ryusen Residence'.

After taking a bath, having a light meal, and settling down, Ryo and Abel were summoned by Von Debout and entered his room.

"I've heard that you both moved on my behalf. Truly, thank you."

Von Debout bowed deeply.

"Think nothing of it."

"We were simply fulfilling our duty as those hired for the task."

Both Abel and Ryo answered with smiles.

Knowing that their efforts had borne some fruit and led to this outcome made those smiles come naturally.

"Now, regarding what comes next…"

Von Debout began.

"The investigation into the incident will continue under the Censorate. Therefore, I've been asked not to leave the imperial capital for a while."

Ryo and Abel nodded at Von Debout's words.

That was only natural.

"Also, my official duty to host the princess ended with the wedding ceremony… so I will no longer be required to enter the palace."

Given the incident, it would be difficult to enter the palace again until he was fully cleared of suspicion.

Even Ryo could understand that much.

"The investigation from the Censorate will be conducted by officials who will come here to the Ryusen Residence… so, I no longer require your protection."

"Ah…"

It was a logical outcome.

"That said, I don't intend to avoid paying for your stay at the Ryusen Residence. I was only able to return safely thanks to your efforts. However, since your role as my guards has ended, I just wanted to let you know you are free to move as you wish."

"Understood."

Abel nodded.

"Of course, while you're still staying here, all lodging expenses will be covered by us. It may not mean much, but—well, consider it a token of appreciation… and, I'd like to offer a special reward."

Von Debout placed two leather pouches on the table.

They made a heavy thud as they landed.

"One million Jan—one hundred gold coins in each. In addition, four million Jan each will be transferred directly into your bank accounts. Please accept them."

"Five hundred gold coins in total? Are you sure it's okay to accept this much…?"

"It's from the heart. Please…"

"Very well. We'll gratefully accept."

In the end, Abel nodded.

In such situations, Abel always decided quickly. Quicker than Ryo.

"We'll be staying at the Ryusen Residence for a while longer."

"Yes, thank you."

Abel said, and Von Debout nodded with a smile.

"Abel, you always accept money so quickly."

"What's wrong with that?"

"Well, maybe a little more…like… 'Oh no, I couldn't possibly accept this!' or 'Please, I insist…' some kind of exchange like that would be more polite…"

"It's pointless. Refusing it would be rude. We'd accept in the end anyway. Better to cut out the unnecessary steps."

"I think it lacks refinement…"

"I don't get what you mean."

Ryo shook his head slightly, and Abel shrugged.

As if remembering something, Ryo continued.

"Also, about the lodging fees. I think we should've…"

"Pointless."

Abel cut him off again.

And added.

"Saying we plan to stay a while actually helps relieve the other party of any guilt."

"Ugh…that may be true, but maybe a bit more time before getting to that…"

"More importantly, aren't you going to do something?"

"Huh? Do something?"

Ryo tilted his head, not understanding Abel's intention.

"Now that Lord Von Debout has been released. Wouldn't the usual Ryo go around thanking everyone who helped?"

"You're right! Secretary Shao, Captain Li Chu, and Captain Myun too! I'd like to thank Roche Ten-san as well, but he's probably still very busy—maybe another day. Let's go, Abel! No time to dawdle!"

"…Why am I the one being dragged along?"

Ryo smiled, and Abel, though shrugging, also smiled.

The smiles of those who've resolved their troubles are truly a wonderful thing.

But in this world, there are also those whose smiles are far from wonderful…

Or perhaps more accurately—those who cannot even bring themselves to smile…

The Bin Royal Residence, residence of the Fourth Prince.

Prince Bin scowled as he read through documents.

Just then, Lin Sui—his trusted right-hand man—entered.

Appearing to be in his mid-40s, Lin Sui carried a bundle of papers.

As he entered, he had everyone else leave and shut all the doors completely.

This clearly indicated that the matter at hand was confidential.

"Your Highness, I've prepared a summary of yesterday's matter."

Lin Sui placed the papers on Prince Bin's desk.

"Yesterday? You mean…Ryun?"

Prince Bin lowered his voice.

An assassination plot against a fellow prince was not something to be overheard.

Lin Sui silently nodded.

Prince Bin examined the documents.

"At tomorrow's banquet? I-Isn't that a bit soon?"

"Your Highness, we must act before Prince Ryun consolidates his power. Once his structure is in place, even an attack would be impossible. And you, Your Highness, would be his easiest target."

If anyone observant had been present, they might have noticed how Lin Sui's words lacked true logic and instead served only to stoke Prince Bin's emotions.

In fact, it was so blatant that even someone not observant might notice…

Prince Ryun had yet to even be granted the title of Imperial Prince.

It wasn't even certain he would be.

He had merely married the Princess.

With that in mind, Lin Sui's fearmongering was clearly overblown…

"True, compared to my elder brothers, I am far weaker. My foundation is fragile. I know I'd be the first target. But I won't sit idly by and wait for death! I will strike first!"

"As expected of Your Highness. You are indeed the one most worthy to ascend the throne."

"Very well, Lin Sui. Proceed with the plan."

"As you command."

Lin Sui bowed deeply.

And hidden from Prince Bin's view, a wicked, ominous smile crept onto his face.

It was clearly not the kind of smile one should direct at their own lord…

"Well, I'm glad we were able to visit everyone who helped us without any trouble."

"You're the one who insisted we bring alcohol as a souvenir. Everyone sure was happy, though."

It had been Ryo's idea to bring some rather high-quality alcohol as a gift, and it turned out to be a hit.

Abel hadn't quite understood at first…

"Bringing alcohol is a classic way to show gratitude. Back in the town of Rune, Hugh-san used to often bring drinks to Knight Captain Neville Black."

"…Is that so?"

You never know what kind of knowledge or experience might come in handy.

The world is full of useful little tricks…

By the way, the recipients of the alcohol were Secretary Shao, Captain Myun, and Captain La Wu, from the same Public Vessel Department.

Secretary Shao was a spirited and distinguished elder, someone who looked like alcohol would suit him perfectly.

Captain Myun and Captain La Wu—both seafaring men—had been chosen based on Ryo's somewhat arbitrary assumption that "men of the sea love their drink".

Fortunately, Ryo's hunch proved accurate. All three turned out to be quite fond of alcohol.

"The problem now is Captain Li Chu. He's apparently busy today."

"Secretary Shao mentioned that. Said he wouldn't be able to leave the palace today or tomorrow."

"The White Flame Army, even though the Imperial Capital doesn't have any imperial tombs… sounds like a tough job."

Being tasked with more than your job title suggests… perhaps that's a common fate for the competent.

But there was a bigger issue with Captain Li Chu.

According to Secretary Shao, Li Chu barely drank at all.

In that case…

"Confections, then."

"R-Really?"

Ryo declared it with full confidence, while Abel eyed him skeptically.

"He has fifty subordinates. So I thought of getting something like a box of a hundred individually wrapped pastries that keep well…"

"Wait. Does the White Flame Army have fifty members including Captain Li Chu, or excluding him?"

"Huh?"

"If it's fifty without him, that makes fifty-one with him. You calculated two each, right…?"

"Oh…so we'd need a hundred and two…"

A box of a hundred wouldn't be enough.

"A bloody feud might break out within the White Flame Army over pastries…"

"I doubt it'll come to that, but still."

Food-related grudges are terrifying. Better not take any chances!

Since they had no other errands today, the two of them started walking toward their lodging, the Ryusen Residence.

If they were being escorted like yesterday, it would have been easier to ride Andalusia and Feiwan, but without guards…the capital was just too crowded.

So the horses stayed behind. Luckily, the Ryusen Residence had its own training ground and lawns.

Where the two steeds were now peacefully grazing.

"Come to think of it, Ryo—you haven't gotten the most important gift yet, have you?"

"Huh? I mean, the pastries for Captain Li Chu…"

"No, I mean for tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?"

Ryo tilted his head, not following Abel's point.

Tomorrow's schedule was the formal presentation of the prince and princess around noon, followed by a reception in the evening…

"Uh?"

"You are invited to the reception, right?"

"Yes, I am."

"You're planning to show up empty-handed?"

"Eh…?"

"You're representing the Kingdom of Knightley. In other words, you're standing in for the king—me. And you're attending the prince's reception…along with the emperor, foreign dignitaries, and ambassadors. Empty-handed?"

"Now that you mention it…"

Back on Earth, he had seen kings and knights in films and dramas bearing incredibly lavish gifts when visiting as national representatives…

Ryo's face turned pale.

Not because he was a water-attribute magician—this was pure anxiety.

How could he possibly obtain such a valuable or grand gift…?

"Abel, why are you only bringing this up now?! If… you'd just declined the invitation when the emperor asked…"

"Can't help it… I only just realized it myself."

Abel looked sheepish under Ryo's scolding.

"Anything we could afford with the money we have on hand would probably be laughable as a state gift…"

"Yeah…"

They both sighed.

But then Ryo's eyes lit up.

He spotted something… on Abel's back!

"I'll have that magic sword of yours!"

"Huh? No way. Absolutely not."

"Why not?! That's our only hope! Even if no one knows its name, a magic sword still looks impressive enough. Abel, hand it over!"

"Nope. I refuse."

Abel flatly rejected the idea.

As anyone would.

That sword was his most precious companion.

If their lives were on the line, maybe. But for a gift…

"Abel, if you won't give it up, then I'll have to take it by force…"

"Wouldn't… your robe be better?"

"Huh?"

"That robe. Isn't it from the Fairy King? That's way rarer than my magic sword. Perfect for a state gift."

"How dare you! This was a gift from my master! I'd rather freeze all of Darwei into an icy wasteland than part with it!"

"Yeah, let's not do anything drastic…"

Both of them were in possession of extremely rare and valuable gear.

And, of course, neither wanted to part with it.

"In that case… there's no helping it. We'll have to go with the one thing everyone agrees has enough value to present to the emperor."

"What? We have something like that?"

"Yes… it pains me to say it, especially since he was so happily galloping on the lawn…but…"

"The lawn? No… don't tell me…"

"It's your fault, Abel. Therefore, we'll present your beloved horse, Feiwan…"

"Rejected."

"Why?!"

"Because he's my horse."

"Such tyranny…"

Ryo's proposal was shot down.

Worse, Abel countered with his own.

"Then your Andalusia would also make a fine gift to the emperor…"

"Rejected!"

"Hey…"

"I'd rather assassinate the emperor and erase all evidence than give up Andalusia!"

"Please don't actually do that…"

If the Kingdom's premier duke assassinated the emperor…

Well, they were far enough apart that it might not start a war, but still—not something you should do.

"This is bad…"

"Yeah, real bad…"

The two of them were at a complete loss.

Then Abel glanced down at his hand. There, he wore a ring set with a small blue magic stone.

And in Ryo's left ear, he saw the 'Soul Resonance'.

Those two were a matching pair.

A blue water-attributed magic stone, split in two…

"Ryo. I just thought of the perfect gift."

"Huh?"

-x-X-x-

Two days after the wedding ceremony of the Sixth Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen.

That day would include a public unveiling to the citizens of the imperial capital, followed by a celebratory banquet held in the evening at the imperial palace.

In the morning, Ryo and Abel were each busy with their own tasks in the training grounds of the Ryusen Residence.

These were tasks they hadn't been able to do since becoming Von Debout's bodyguards…

Abel was practicing flying with his Flight Ring.

At first, having not practiced in a long time, his body seemed to have forgotten how to fly, and he wore an expression full of despair.

But after repeating the process again and again, his body began to remember…

"Alright!"

Though still low, he was now able to fly forward steadily.

"Abel, altitude is important too. To see the unveiling procession from here at the Ryusen Residence, you'll probably need to get up pretty high."

The water-attribute magician remarked, fiddling with his own Flight Ring, and had just said something quite shocking.

"…See the procession from here?"

"Yes. It sounds like it'll be moving all around the imperial capital. If we watch from the sky above here, we might catch a glimpse as it passes nearby."

"Wouldn't it be easier to just go out onto the street…?"

"If a suspicious-looking swordsman like you were watching from the street, the guards might arrest you."

"No, they wouldn't!"

Ryo's nonsense aside, Abel actually did want to try going up high.

To him, 'flying' meant soaring through the skies at great heights.

He continued practicing with complete focus.

And finally…

"Whoa…"

"You've risen higher than the roof of the Ryusen Residence!"

"I did it…ah—"

Abel fell.

But just before he hit the ground, he was caught by Ryo using .

"Sorry."

"No worries. That was actually kind of dangerous. If you'd landed wrong, even that height could've been fatal."

"I'll be more careful. I noticed it suddenly tilted, but why?"

"Probably a sudden gust of wind."

Ryo answered Abel's question.

Previously, Ryo had analyzed the Flight Ring's magic formula and understood that it functioned like a multi-rotor drone—lifting off using four downward air jets and controlling direction through adjusting the strength of each jet.

But with that kind of setup, a sudden gust can throw off the balance and cause instability.

If it were a drone with a nearly perfect symmetrical structure, it wouldn't be so bad, but it's a human flying with a flight ring.

It had to support hovering in an upright posture and forward movement while leaning forward.

The magic formula had to perform extremely complex calculations, but even so, it had its limits.

"Once you get used to it, I think you'll be able to recover your posture even if it breaks mid-air."

"Yeah. I'll keep practicing."

Abel looked delighted.

He truly seemed to enjoy flying.

What one loves, one becomes skilled at.

Abel would soon be able to fly freely.

Ryo had no doubt about that.

While the two were having lunch in the Ryusen Residence's dining room, Wei Fon arrived.

"In about thirty minutes, the unveiling procession will pass in front of here."

"Oh!"

"Let's go watch it!"

But perhaps because they took their time eating before going outside.

The street was already packed with people.

"It's because Abel ate so slowly."

"No, it's because you said, 'the procession's not going to run away,' and got seconds on dessert."

The magician and swordsman's habit of blaming each other was destiny itself.

"Hey, I can see it!"

Voices could be heard from the right side of the street.

"Well, can't be helped. Desperate times call for desperate measures."

Saying this, Ryo returned to the Ryusen Residence grounds.

"Come on, Abel, over here."

"Hm? What for?"

"We're going to watch the procession from above. "

As Ryo chanted, a thick—very thick—icicle about four meters in diameter rose from beneath their feet, lifting the two of them three meters into the air.

From there, they could see over the wall of the Ryusen Residence and onto the street.

"Ooh, not bad."

"Right? It's a bit conspicuous, so I wanted to avoid this if possible, but oh well. I couldn't let Abel lose face."

"My face? What're you talking about?"

"Because by Princess Shio Fen's side, her maid Mifa will definitely be there, right? Since you're her master, you need to witness your disciple's big moment properly."

"…Is that so?"

Ryo explained passionately, and although Abel didn't fully understand, he accepted it.

He did want to see Mifa doing her best.

"Wow."

"So extravagant."

At the head of the procession was a large flag with gold trim.

It was either the national flag of Darwei or the imperial flag…

More followed, dressed in dazzling, ornate garments; then came armored military officers…and finally…

"There's Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen!"

"They look good together."

Ryo spoke excitedly, and Abel nodded with a smile.

Prince Ryun's attire was based on white, with light blue accents.

Princess Shio Fen's outfit was similarly white-based, but accented with soft pink.

Both were beautiful—but side by side, they truly shone.

Beside the float that carried the prince and princess walked their attendants— and among them was Mifa.

"Mifa looks beautiful too!"

"Yeah, she's doing her job well."

Wearing a maid outfit in shades of pink, Mifa remained vigilant of her surroundings.

Mifa's gaze briefly caught sight of two people beyond the wall.

"Abel-sensei? Ryo-sama?"

Abel was smiling kindly.

Ryo was waving.

It seemed to be them.

Mifa gave a small bow.

That slight movement caught Princess Shio Fen's attention.

She, too, spotted the two.

"Truly amusing individuals."

She murmured with a small smile.

Prince Ryun noticed her smile but didn't know the reason.

And so, the procession passed on.

"Wow, that was amazing. No surprise, considering it was an official unveiling."

"It's surprisingly exhausting to be under constant watch."

Ryo gave an innocent impression, while Abel spoke of the difficulty of being the one on display.

Apparently, Abel had experienced quite a lot in his time as a king.

"When we return to the kingdom, you'll have to do an unveiling procession too, Abel."

"Huh…?"

"You need to show yourself to the people every once in a while!"

"What's that supposed to mean…?"

"Like: Behold! Abel the First!"

"…"

Ryo seemed to be seriously planning some kind of public presentation.

"Maybe you should fly through the sky while you're at it!"

"No, I can only fly using the Flight Ring in this region— 'Chuo Chuang', where the imperial capital is located."

"Oh right, they did mention that before…"

They'd learned that while traveling with the Roche Ten group.

"I should focus on that and analyze it more…"

Ryo began mumbling to himself again.

Abel shook his head slightly.

Then…

"Hmph."

He jumped off the .

Watching that, Ryo muttered:

"Flying Swordsman Abel… the evolved form of Starving Swordsman Abel… but still, nothing beats the impact of 'The Starving Swordsman'. A shame."

Flying Swordsman Abel wasn't just about flight.

"Ryo, did you say something?"

Apparently, his hearing was sharp too.

"N-no, nothing at all! Just keep working on flying freely, okay?"

"Yeah, leave it to me."

Abel responded cheerfully, paying no mind to Ryo's evasion.

To fly through the sky—

It might be a primal, instinctive desire that humanity has carried since the beginning.

The wedding banquet for the Sixth Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen was held within the Forbidden Palace of the imperial court.

Near the West Flower Gate of the Forbidden Palace, in the West White Hall, delegations, envoys, and ambassadors from foreign nations had gathered.

It was noon.

The time when, as an official event, Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen were making their ceremonial appearance before the people of the capital.

However, for those gathered in the West White Hall, something more important than the ceremonial procession was at hand.

That was diplomacy.

Today, the West White Hall had transformed into a venue for diplomatic activity.

Of course, these delegates would remain in the capital for some time, engaging in diplomatic negotiations with various countries.

Today served as the prelude to those talks.

Understanding this, the imperial court had prepared the West White Hall as early as 9 a.m. and offered it to the foreign delegations, despite the banquet itself not commencing until 5 p.m.

After all, it had been five years since a prince had married a principal consort.

Naturally, it was also the first time in five years that diplomatic affairs were so lively.

Delegations had even arrived from the distant archipelago region.

Still, most of them were merchants.

Not diplomats, but merchants authorized by their governments to act as official representatives.

Due to the great distance between the archipelago region and Darwei, there was no urgent need for diplomatic negotiations.

Moreover, since a regional conference had already been held following the recent turmoil in the Kingdom of Suje, there was little left to discuss.

Nevertheless, the marriage of a prince from a nation that could be considered not just a representative but the very embodiment of the Eastern countries—such an event couldn't be ignored.

No country wanted to risk trouble later by failing to send a representative.

So, they dispatched merchants granted diplomatic status.

For the merchants, it was a golden opportunity. If they could procure rare goods from the capital and return home, they would earn substantial profits.

Although sailing in unfamiliar seas came with risk, the potential gains more than compensated for it.

Thus, every nation had sent its top merchants as their representatives.

"I had a productive discussion, Bandelsh-dono. Until next time."

"Until next time."

With those words, Bandelsh, chairman of the Blue Jade Trading Company, returned to his subordinates.

"Father, please have some tea."

"Thank you."

It was his youngest son, Banhu, who offered the tea.

Bandelsh had told him it was too far and dangerous to come, but Banhu had insisted on joining him.

"I'm glad I came. It's so different from our homeland."

"Well, even within Darwei, the scale of the imperial capital Hanlin is unmatched. There's no city to compare it with."

As they spoke, someone approached.

"What in the world…"

Bandelsh, experienced as he was, could not hide his surprise upon seeing the man.

He wasn't a merchant.

He was also from the Archipelago Region.

But not from Bandelsh's own Komakyuta Principality. Rather, he was from the neighboring Kingdom of Suje…

"To think Lord Protector Kabui Somal, would come to Darwei himself."

"Ah, Mr. Bandelsh of the Komakyuta Principality's Blue Jade Trading Company. It's been since the Archipelago Regional Conference, hasn't it?"

The two men exchanged greetings.

Komakyuta and Suje were the two major powers of the Archipelago Region.

But great powers from the same region rarely got along.

That's just how history goes.

Unless a common enemy or a greater power emerges, rivalry persists.

That said, their current relations could be considered warm.

Certainly not hostile or nearing war.

"Still… while most of our nations, including ours, sent merchants, Suje sent its ruling elite, the Lord Protector himself. That's truly surprising."

Bandelsh spoke with a wry smile.

But the surprise was genuine.

Kabui Somal was Suje's cornerstone—both in name and in practice.

For him to be in Darwei meant… he would be away from his country for several months.

"Our country has stabilized under Her Majesty the Queen."

Kabui Somal smiled as he replied.

It was nothing but the truth.

Since Queen Iliaja's ascension, Suje had rapidly regained political stability, economic strength, and public order.

To the point that even with the Lord Protector away for months, everything remained secure.

Of course, he hadn't traveled all the way to Dawei just for the wedding…

With such encounters unfolding, time passed…

Evening.

The wedding banquet of Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen was about to begin.

The location: Zhenglin Hall, within the Forbidden Palace.

In truth, Zhenglin Hall was rarely used, even for rituals.

Why? Because it was simply too vast.

The central room of the hall was even larger than the Taiji Hall, where morning court sessions and banquets with officials were sometimes held.

It was so spacious that it was difficult to utilize effectively. It was only used for gatherings involving large numbers of nobles and senior officials— just like today.

In fact, it was usually employed by the Imperial Guards for training…

Imagine a massive gymnasium with three basketball courts— that's the scale.

Even voices wouldn't carry across from end to end…

No wonder it wasn't used for political functions.

However, for a royal wedding banquet such as this, the Zhenglin Hall had traditionally been the venue.

With the gathering of the Shitaifu (upper nobility), the guests numbered in the hundreds.

Being a banquet, there were also performances and entertainment.

Furthermore, foreign delegations would make their appearances here to offer greetings to the emperor and his family.

All of this required a space of considerable size.

By the way, after offering their greetings and presenting their gifts, the foreign delegates would not remain at the banquet but would instead withdraw to the West White Hall.

That was the custom.

As the court officials took their seats, Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen were seated at the front.

Finally, the emperor entered.

Naturally, everyone stood to greet him.

Yet, some noticed something peculiar.

A single empty seat.

From the entrance, directly facing the prince and princess, the seat was to the right… right next to the emperor's.

To the left, from the entrance, the prince, his family, and their allies were seated.

To the right, the high officials of the Six Ministries were seated.

The Six Ministries—Personnel, Revenue, Rites, War, Justice, and Public Works—were each led by a Shangshu.

Roughly equivalent to ministers in the Central countries.

In that sense, the vacant seat was the minister's seat.

The highest among them.

Even higher than the Prime Minister who oversaw the ministers.

Currently, only the Emperor himself stood above the Prime Minister.

Of course, everyone present knew whose seat it truly was.

It was the seat of the Crown Prince.

The Crown Prince stood apart from the other princes and imperial princes, holding a position that oversaw the Shangshu ministers.

Thus, his seat was not among the princes, but among the top officials—yet at a higher rank than even them.

However, in Darwei, the position of Crown Prince had been vacant for the past five years.

And still remained vacant.

That was why many attendees found it puzzling that the seat had been prepared at all.

The only exception would be if a king from another nation were present…but not just any king.

A sovereign of nearly equal standing to Emperor Tsuin…yet, among the Eastern countries, there existed no such sovereign.

Only perhaps a monarch who had ruled a large nation for decades and commanded great personal respect…

But no such person was present today.

So, the seat remained empty when Emperor Tsuin entered and took his place.

Right beside that very seat.

It was only at that moment that some noticed the strange, unoccupied chair.

Still, no one dared ask about it.

If the emperor said nothing, it meant everything was according to his will.

Even the empty seat.

And so, the banquet began.

The reception proceeded without incident, eventually transitioning to greetings from the foreign envoys.

That said, these greetings were not particularly entertaining for the attendees.

They ate the food placed before them and drank wine.

Those who could indulge gradually became more relaxed.

But some could not—some were not permitted to.

First and foremost, the two main figures at the center:

Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen.

Though they were the stars of the evening, they hadn't touched their food or wine.

Perhaps this was a universal truth of wedding banquets everywhere.

The other princes, including the imperial princes, were similar.

While they might nibble at their food… they were far from eating freely.

Some princes hadn't touched their wine at all.

Then there were the Shangshu ministers and other high-ranking officials.

Any foolish behavior here could cost them their heads.

Though lower-ranking officials shared the same risk, they weren't likely to be addressed directly by the emperor—so they ate and drank to their hearts' content…

The world, in many ways, is unfair.

And finally…

"And now, the final guest."

A voice echoed from the entrance, announcing the next arrival.

At those words, Emperor Tsuin set down the cup in his hand.

Silently, he straightened his back.

"Last, from the Central countries, the Kingdom of Knightley."

The moment that declaration rang out, all sound in the hall ceased.

A heartbeat later, murmurs erupted.

"Did they say Knightley?"

"You mean, like the bard's tale?"

"No way—that's just a legend, right?"

Such whispers, especially from those intoxicated by drink, rippled through the crowd.

The announcer continued:

"His Excellency Duke Rondo, representing His Majesty Abel I of the Kingdom of Knightley."

With that, silence fell once again.

But only for a few seconds.

Soon, an even greater stir than before swept through the hall.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa."

"Abel I? So it's really that Abel?"

"And he said Duke Rondo, didn't he?"

"Duke Rondo… like in the bard's song, right?"

"Yeah, the Ballad of Duke Rondo…"

Even those of high rank began whispering now.

The princes exchanged glances.

Though none of them had answers.

Their families, however, remained more lighthearted.

Even the ladies murmured among themselves:

"Oh my!" and "Is that true?"

The Six Ministries' high officials spoke in hushed tones.

"Why would someone like that be here?"

"He can't be that impressive."

"Who even found this man…"

Yet perhaps the most shocked of all was one of today's main figures.

"No way… Duke Rondo, actually here…"

Prince Ryun, the Sixth Prince, murmured aloud—his words reaching the ears of Princess Shio Fen beside him.

"Prince Ryun, you know Duke Rondo?"

"Uh, yes. I met him once at the royal tomb… Fenmu, the imperial mausoleum. I had the honor of greeting him."

"Oh my!"

Princess Shio Fen smiled at his startled response.

And then finally—the doors opened.

In that instant, it felt as though ice had slid down the backs of many present.

The military officers instinctively reached for the hilts of their swords.

A lone man in a robe entered.

-x-X-x-

And then finally—the doors opened.

In that instant, it felt as though ice had slid down the backs of many present.

The military officers instinctively reached for the hilts of their swords.

Not too fast, not too slow.

The stronger a person was, the less they could look at the robed man.

They couldn't even turn their eyes toward him.

Their instincts refused.

The weaker ones, conversely, couldn't look away.

They lacked even the strength to avert their gaze.

Their teeth chattered.

Sweat poured down their faces.

Yet their eyes were locked, unable to turn aside…

Among them, a few strong individuals forcibly suppressed their instincts and watched Duke Rondo's approach— enduring even physical pain to do so.

One such person sat directly ahead— the day's main figure.

"To think… it would be to this extent."

Prince Ryun murmured.

The other main figure, seated beside him, whispered:

"Ryo-sama?"

Princess Shio Fen's whisper reached Ryun's ears.

He heard her— but couldn't question her here.

No… not now.

He couldn't even move his eyes!

Duke Rondo advanced.

When he reached the foot of the ceremonial stairs, he bowed gracefully.

As the King's representative.

He effectively stood in for the sovereign himself.

A full prostration would be politically inappropriate.

These matters involved delicate inter-national dynamics and hierarchy.

And so, Ryo offered only a refined, elegant bow.

If anyone had complaints about that…

"Th-That's disrespectful!"

A voice came from the left.

Based on the seating arrangement, it was likely the Fourth Prince, Imperial Prince Bin.

Without a word, Ryo doubled the pressure he'd been restraining— and directed it at Prince Bin.

"Ghh…kah…"

The prince could barely breathe.

Ryo confirmed that— then smiled.

Though intended as a polite smile, it appeared malevolent and ominous to all who saw it…

"Duke Rondo, perhaps that's enough…"

This time, the voice came from the right.

One he recognized.

"My apologies, Your Majesty."

Ryo gave another elegant bow.

And in that instant, the oppressive aura vanished.

Sound returned to the room.

It was the sound of people breathing again.

Something they hadn't been able to do under Ryo's pressure…

"I've heard the name Duke Rondo before, but this was excessive. Downright rude."

The one speaking now was seated beside the Fourth Prince.

The Third Prince, Imperial Prince Churei.

"All was done at His Majesty the Emperor's behest."

"What?"

Ryo replied with a smile, and Churei grimaced at the answer.

"Hahaha, indeed. It was my mistake. I foolishly asked to witness Duke Rondo's full strength as a jest— it was my mistake."

Emperor Tsuin chuckled, clearly delighted.

Many were taken aback by the sight.

It had been ages since Emperor Tsuin looked so pleased.

Yes, perhaps not since five years ago.

"As thanks for indulging me, I've prepared a seat of honor for you. Please, enjoy the festivities."

The emperor gestured to the vacant seat beside him.

It had remained empty since the beginning— for Duke Rondo.

"I am most grateful, Your Majesty."

Ryo bowed again with grace.

"But first, a wedding gift for the bride and groom."

At his words, Abel— who had somehow arrived behind him— stepped forward, bearing a tray covered in cloth.

When Ryo removed the cloth—

What was revealed was a massive magic stone, the size of two fists.

Deep, deep blue. Truly blue.

"What kind of gem is that…?"

"No, that's a magic stone."

"That can't be! No magic stone is that big!"

"A blue stone… that means water. Even a fingernail-sized one can buy a whole barony…"

"Where in the world did he get something like that?"

The crowd buzzed in astonishment.

Apparently, it was recognized as valuable.

Relieved by that, both Ryo and Abel sighed inwardly.

They hadn't known the exact worth either.

"Duke Rondo… is that truly a magic stone?"

Even Emperor Tsuin seemed shaken.

His voice was subtly trembling.

"Yes, Your Majesty. I thought it a fitting gift for the wedding of the prince and princess."

Ryo replied with a smile.

"I've never heard of such a massive water stone… if I may ask—what creature did it come from?"

"This is the magic stone of a Kraken, Your Majesty."

The banquet exploded into astonished murmurs.

Everyone began speaking with their neighbors.

Even the princes and ministers were no exception.

No one remained silent.

No one… except the Emperor and the guest of honor.

To possess a Kraken's magic stone was to imply one had defeated the monster.

That was the natural conclusion.

But there was one major problem.

"Can a human even defeat a Kraken?"

The question slipped from Emperor Tsuin's lips.

Ryo smiled and answered:

"That is a secret— for now. I shall share the story with Your Majesty another time."

"Oh-ho! I look forward to it!"

The emperor nodded, clearly delighted.

And with that, the princes could say no more.

They must have wanted to know.

Can a human defeat a Kraken?

How did he do it?

Even if Ryo had tried to dodge the question, they'd likely have accused him of insolence and pressed him.

But once the emperor spoke, they no longer could.

(Heh heh heh…)

A wicked grin formed in Ryo's heart.

Ryo was then led to the seat beside the emperor.

Abel stood respectfully behind him.

Emperor Tsuin looked at Abel with interest.

"Duke Rondo, and this swordsman?"

"This is my bodyguard, Albert, Your Majesty."

Ryo introduced him, and Abel bowed in silence.

It was Knightley style of bow—graceful yet brimming with strength, radiating noble dignity…a masterful bow.

"Ho…as expected of the duke's guard— splendid."

"I am honored by your praise."

Tsuin praised Abel's etiquette; Ryo smiled in gratitude.

To recognize another's refinement, one must possess refinement themselves.

Emperor Tsuin had ruled the great power of Darwei for over two decades.

Indeed, these past five years had shown signs of decay… but he was no fool.

At least until five years ago… his ability to judge people had been widely respected.

Thus, even from a single bow, he sensed something extraordinary in Abel.

"Someone. Prepare a meal for Albert-dono as well."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

At Emperor Tsuin's command, preparations for the meal began immediately.

"Thank you, Your Majesty."

"Think nothing of it. It is merely a token of appreciation for the splendid bow he showed us."

While Tsuin and Ryo exchanged those words, the banquet continued.

Greetings from the various countries had concluded, and dancers were now performing.

Emperor Tsuin's gaze turned to Abel's left hand as he was served and seated.

"What you wear on your left arm—Albert-dono—is that a flight ring?"

"Yes, Your Majesty. Albert insisted on having one, so I bought it for him."

Ryo replied with a wry smile.

Abel smiled awkwardly as well.

"I see, I see. Although the Kingdom of Knightley has become famous worldwide thanks to the songs of bards, I have heard that the Eastern countries are superior in flight technology. Is that true?"

"Yes, Your Majesty. Our kingdom has not yet developed technology that allows anyone to fly this easily."

Without shame or humility, Ryo acknowledged the superiority of the Eastern countries in flight technology.

"In fact, I also purchased one and have been studying its components."

"Truly! Duke Rondo, do you also practice alchemy?"

"It is a hobby of mine."

Tsuin looked surprised, while Ryo smiled pleasantly.

"The imperial capital offers many interesting things—both fun and educational."

Ryo said with a warm smile.

It was that same smile Abel always described as Ryo's charm.

"You honor us. Please, stay as long as you wish."

At that point, Tsuin paused for a moment in thought.

Then he continued.

"Are you still staying at the Ryusen Residence?"

"Yes."

"But, Von Debout…"

"I'm aware. The escort contract with Lord Von Debout has ended. However, for Albert's flight training, the spacious training grounds at Ryusen Residence are quite convenient."

"I see."

Tsuin nodded deeply at Ryo's explanation.

But then, the conversation took a sharp turn.

"By the way, I heard that you are acquainted with Prince Ryun?"

"Yes. We greeted each other at the Imperial Mausoleum."

Most likely, Captain Li Chu of the White Flame Army had reported it.

"What did you think of him? I would like your candid opinion."

Emperor Tsuin asked with a smile.

But Ryo could see that the smile didn't reach his eyes.

This was a serious question.

"I found him to be strong-willed and steady in character, with a kind heart. However… to be honest, I feel he's also putting on a facade."

"A facade?"

Apparently, the expression wasn't familiar in Darwei.

"Like a tiger pretending to be a house cat…"

"I see."

Tsuin chuckled wryly at the analogy.

"That's not necessarily a bad thing for a prince of a great empire. And as for his kindness— I found it rather endearing. He's suitable enough to marry someone I know."

"Someone you know? Duke Rondo, are you… acquainted with Princess Shio Fen?"

"Yes. I had the chance to meet her in Bosuntar Kingdom. Her lady-in-waiting, Lady Mifa, is Albert's only apprentice."

As Ryo said this, Abel bowed his head.

"That is… quite surprising…"

Clearly not expecting a connection to Princess Shio Fen.

Even Tsuin seemed speechless.

"Hmm… in that case, this might be even more convenient."

"Excuse me?"

Ryo caught Tsuin's muttered words.

"I wish to give you a gift, Duke Rondo."

"A gift?"

Ryo was surprised by the sudden offer.

"I want you to accept a residence."

"…I beg your pardon?"

The conversation was taking an unexpected turn.

"The residence is large enough for your escort to practice flying. It's also a bit removed from the palace, so you can live comfortably without concern."

"That's too generous a gift."

"Nonsense. Compared to that water magic stone… Even a hundred or two hundred mansions would not suffice."

"But that was a gift for the prince and princess…"

"Is it strange for a parent to repay a debt their child cannot?"

"Uh…"

Ryo instinctively glanced at Abel.

Abel gave a small nod.

"Very well. I gratefully accept."

"Oh! I am most pleased. In fact, the residence is right next to the one being prepared for Ryun and his wife."

"Ah, I see. Because I'm acquainted with both of them."

"Exactly."

Tsuin paused briefly, then continued.

"Also…it is because I want you to protect Ryun."

"Pardon…?"

Tsuin was still smiling.

But once again, his eyes did not smile.

Anyone watching from afar wouldn't suspect that a serious request was being made.

"From now on, there will be greater threats to his life. If you happen to be nearby in such a moment, please help him."

"…And if I'm not nearby and he loses his life?"

"Then that is Ryun's fate. We will have to accept it."

All of this was said with a smile.

Ryo also maintained a smile.

So no one would know they were having a serious discussion.

Abel listened intently but kept his eyes elsewhere.

"I will not remain in Darwei forever."

"I understand. You will return to the Central Countries, yes? But to do so from the Eastern countries, one must pass through the 'Corridor' in northwestern Darwei. However… it is not always passable."

"Oh?"

"This is not known among the commoners. Perhaps not even among the Shitaifu class. The 'Corridor' is sometimes blocked by an invisible wall. Now is one such time. It's uncertain when it will open again… but it should be passable in about a year."

"And when it opens, does it remain open for long?"

"Records from the previous dynasty say it remains open for at least five years."

This was shocking news to both Ryo and Abel.

It seemed leaving Darwei would not be easy.

"Could this be why there's so little traffic between the Eastern and Central countries…?"

"Yes, because of that wall."

"I see."

Ryo nodded once.

Seeing this, Tsuin continued.

"So, how about it? Just for that time… protect Ryun. Not constantly, just when necessary. How about that?"

Behind the smiling eyes was a very serious light.

It was as if he knew Ryun would face grave danger.

Or perhaps… the emperor himself would be the cause…

"Understood. While I am here… I'll look in on him from time to time, as a neighbor."

"Oh, I am grateful."

Both kept smiling.

Only their eyes told the truth.

"By the way, is it true—what they sing in your songs—that you struck down a hundred thousand in a single blow, Duke Rondo?"

"What?"

Ryo struggled to follow Tsuin's sudden change of topic.

He understood it was likely meant to redirect attention from their previous conversation.

But still, it wasn't easy.

"It wasn't a single blow. I cast the same spell several times in rapid succession."

"Oh-hoh. What kind of magic was it?"

"Something like this…"

Ryo held his right palm upward and summoned a small about ten centimeters long.

"I fired larger versions of these in volleys."

"A spear of ice? Impressive indeed…"

Tsuin trailed off mid-sentence.

"Your Majesty?"

"No, forgive me, Duke Rondo. How are you able to use magic?"

"Excuse me?"

Ryo tilted his head, not understanding the question.

"Within the palace— especially in this Forbidden Castle— magic cannot be generated. Due to alchemy. Yet you've just done so."

"Yes, it seems I can."

"Someone!"

"Your Majesty, I'm here."

The one who knelt beside Tsuin was none other than Captain Li Chu of the White Flame Army.

"Li Chu, investigate immediately whether there's an issue with the magic systems in the Forbidden Castle."

"Understood."

With that, Captain Li Chu left quickly.

Ryo and Abel exchanged glances in silence.

They understood something serious was happening…

But all they could do was wait.

Meanwhile, the banquet continued.

The entertainment shifted from dancing to koto music, then to sword dancing.

Five minutes later, Captain Li Chu returned.

"What did you find?"

"Yes! As Your Majesty suspected, a malfunction was discovered in the 'Starry Veil', which protects the entire palace. The alchemists are currently repairing it. It should be restored shortly."

"This is troubling…"

Emperor Tsuin shook his head slightly at the report.

Ryo watched silently.

Noticing this, Tsuin spoke.

"Thanks to you, Duke Rondo, we discovered the issue before it became a catastrophe. I am grateful."

"Please, think nothing of it. You mentioned just now that this 'Starry Veil' protects the palace?"

"Yes. Because of it, magic cannot be used within the Forbidden Castle. There are other complex defensive mechanisms as well… but the Starry Veil is at the core. If it fails, the entire defense is compromised. But, why would this happen…"

At that moment, the roof of Zhenglin Hall exploded.

-x-X-x-

""

The moment the wall of ice was deployed, hundreds of flames burst and scattered against its surface.

Then, from the gaping hole in the ceiling, two figures descended…

And attacked the prince and princess.

Clang!

Clang!

Two swordsmen stepped forward to protect them.

They were master and disciple.

Before the prince stood Abel.

Before the princess stood Mifa.

Their swords clashed with dark shadows.

Yes, 'shadows' would be the most accurate description.

Their physiques resembled humans—two arms and two legs—but their faces were completely featureless.

"Why are Shadow Stalkers in a place like this?"

Abel muttered instinctively.

Yes, what they were fighting were Shadow Stalkers.

"Mifa, these Shadow Stalkers are strong. Be careful."

"Yes, Master."

Mifa nodded at Abel's warning.

Even Abel, a veteran adventurer, had only a handful of encounters with Shadow Stalkers.

Said to be monsters born of the forest, Shadow Stalkers dwell deep within vast forests where humans seldom tread.

Even if someone entered such a forest, they wouldn't attack indiscriminately.

It's said they only attack those whom the forest itself deems a threat.

That's why even seasoned adventurers have little combat experience with them.

And so, Abel reasoned that his sixteen-year-old apprentice Mifa would certainly have no such experience, and offered his advice.

In truth, Mifa was shocked.

A shadow with a tangible form had attacked… that was how she interpreted it.

As always, she had positioned herself to be ready to protect Princess Shio Fen.

Because it was a formal ceremony, she wasn't wearing the longer dagger her master had given her.

So, the moment something lunged at the princess, she quickly borrowed a sword from a nearby Imperial Guard and intercepted the attack…

But that initial shock and fear were wiped away by Abel's words.

She didn't know what these shadows were, but her master did.

He gave her advice— and entrusted her with battle.

Which meant he believed she was capable of fighting them.

There was no need to worry.

All she had to do was swing her sword, as always.

Amid the intense clashing of swords, another figure descended from the open ceiling.

This one was… yes, a person.

Not a featureless Shadow Stalker.

A woman with long hair the color of deep green, large black eyes—a beauty by any standard—descended slowly.

Her clothes were Eastern robes, red with green trim.

Common attire in Darwei, though something felt… off.

"I'm surprised. My spell was completely repelled."

The green-haired woman said casually as she landed lightly.

"And the two Shadow Stalkers are being pushed back?"

She tilted her head slightly, observing the fierce sword fights.

"Who are you?"

It was Emperor Tsuin who asked the question.

"Nice to meet you, Emperor of Darwei. As for who I am, I'd rather not say. My name is Marie Cloche. I've come to take your lives."

With a sweet smile, she cast a spell.

""

""

Flaming bullets fired rapidly at Emperor Tsuin.

They were blocked by a thick, automatically forming ice wall that layered itself in response.

Over a thousand rounds.

Each blast carried a level of destructive power far beyond ordinary magic.

But despite being shattered and annihilated in flashes of mutual destruction, the ice wall continued to build up.

The one generating the ice wall stood beside Emperor Tsuin—a man in a robe.

The fiery assault ceased.

"I'm a bit shocked. You, in the robe— you're the one generating the ice wall, right? Who exactly are you?"

Marie asked.

The robed man beside Tsuin looked around, surveying the area.

"No, it's you I'm talking to. What's the point of looking around? You're clearly a water-attribute magician, aren't you?"

"You're mistaken."

"Don't play dumb. You're not even doing a good job of it."

"I don't understand what you mean. As a citizen of Darwei, it's only natural for me to protect His Majesty."

"People of Dawei don't wear robes like that. And what's with that 'Oops, I messed up' look on your face?"

Marie shook her head slightly.

"Marie-san…was it? I'd like to know your affiliation."

"Affiliation? I'd rather not say."

Marie scowled at the question.

"Well, I suppose it's normal for an attacker not to reveal their identity…"

"That's not exactly it… Actually, I was told to introduce myself."

"Told to introduce yourself?"

Ryo tilted his head.

An attacker being told to give their name?

By a superior?

But she herself didn't want to?

It made no sense.

"Haa…"

Marie let out a long sigh.

Then, after taking a breath, she introduced herself.

"I am one of the Seven Star Generals of the Choouchi Empire— Marie Cloche."

"Choouchi…?"

Ryo muttered, furrowing his brow.

Others in the room echoed the name, but most of them were tilting their heads.

Some were exchanging confused looks with those beside them.

It was apparently a nation unknown even to Darwei's court officials.

"Why is it that all these empires— like the Debuhi Empire and now the Choouchi Empire— have such ridiculous names?"

Ryo's muttering was apparently louder than he intended.

Even Abel, in the middle of his sword fight, glanced at him.

If his look could be put into words, it would likely be something like, "There goes Ryo saying weird stuff again".

But surprisingly, someone actually agreed with Ryo.

"Right!? It's such a dumb name, isn't it? Choouchi. Choouchi! You can't be serious, right? Ugh, you might be a water-attribute magician in a robe, but you've got a good sense of style!"

"Uh, thank you… I guess."

Anyone would be surprised if an enemy suddenly agreed with them—even Ryo.

Still, Choouchi really is a bad name…

"That's why I didn't want to say it. But whatever. I've named myself, carried out the attack, and completed the mission."

"Mission?"

Her voice wasn't exactly a mutter, and Ryo caught it, prompting him to ask suspiciously.

Marie, realizing what she'd said, showed a genuine 'Oops' face.

"F-Forget I said that…"

"Nope."

"Thought so. Then—die."

At that moment, Marie lunged at Ryo… but stopped halfway.

Her eyes widened in shock.

"What…what kind of trap is this…?"

She asked toward the empty space in front of her.

Nothing could be seen from the outside.

Even the ice wall was still some distance away.

"You shouldn't be able to see it… how did you know there's a there?"

Ryo tilted his head.

But that wasn't what Marie reacted to.

"Dynamic? Steam? Mine?"

Her words trailed off.

Because Abel had just defeated one of the Shadow Stalkers.

And then, without pause, he rushed to Mifa's side and cut the second one down with a single slash.

"Aww…what a shame. Oh well. I'll head back for now. Farewell, Emperor of Darwei. Until next time."

With those words, Marie flew up through the open ceiling and vanished.

For a while, no one spoke.

The first sound was Abel sheathing his sword.

()

Silently, Ryo dispelled the ice barrier.

Then, the room erupted into a cacophony.

"Your Majesty!"

"Are you unharmed, Your Majesty?"

"Who was that woman just now?"

"What were the Imperial Guards doing?!"

"Wasn't the palace supposed to be impenetrable?"

Voices came from all around.

"Your Majesty, I have something to tell you about the green-haired woman."

Ryo leaned in close and whispered quickly into Emperor Tsuin's ear.

Tsuin nodded slightly, without a word.

Imperial Guards quickly surrounded him for protection.

And with them, Emperor Tsuin was escorted away.

Ryo walked forward.

There, the Sixth Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen were thanking Abel and Mifa.

"Thank you. Thank you so much for helping us."

"No, Ryo's ice wall was there too, so actually, the two of you were under pretty heavy protection."

Abel replied modestly to Prince Ryun's words.

"Thank you, Mifa."

"No, Princess, protecting you is my duty."

Mifa answered happily in response to Princess Shio Fen's gratitude.

The first to notice Ryo approaching was Prince Ryun.

"Duke Rondo, thank you for protecting me, my consort, and His Majesty."

He said this while placing both hands together in front of his chest and bowing.

"No, no, Your Highness, I only did what was natural. Please raise your head."

Ryo replied kindly.

Indeed, at that moment, doing nothing and protecting no one was never an option.

So it was true he had merely done what was natural.

"I didn't know you were Duke Rondo, Ryo-sama."

It was Princess Shio Fen who said this and bowed.

"Ah…um…it's not that I was hiding it…"

Ryo faltered with his words.

Then he glanced to the side and added,

"I was going to tell you, you know? But Abel told me not to."

"Why would you lie about something that would be exposed so quickly…"

Abel immediately dismissed Ryo's excuse.

"So, Duke Rondo, you knew the Princess already?"

"Yes. I was helped a great deal in Bosuntar."

Prince Ryun nodded once and Ryo responded.

"Lady-in-waiting Mifa is a sword disciple of Abel-sensei."

Princess Shio Fen introduced her with a smile.

"Mifa has grown into a wonderful bodyguard."

Abel praised her.

Mifa's face turned bright red at the compliment.

At that moment, a man approached them.

"Excuse me for interrupting, Your Highnesses, Duke Rondo. You are being summoned."

It was Captain Li Chu.

He deliberately didn't say who was summoning them.

Still, the fact that someone would dare interrupt a conversation between a prince and a duke made it clear who it must be.

"Excuse me, I'll be back shortly."

Ryo said, and Prince Ryun, Princess Shio Fen, and Mifa bowed their heads.

Ryo and Abel followed Captain Li Chu.

"That was quite the close call."

"Yeah, they were a troublesome bunch."

"No. Not that, Abel."

"Hmm?"

Ryo denied it, and Abel tilted his head, confused.

"Given how things played out, His Majesty might have been killed."

"…Huh?"

Ryo's words made no sense to Abel.

They spoke in hushed voices, just quiet enough that Captain Li Chu walking ahead wouldn't hear.

Though, perhaps he could hear…but he wisely kept walking without turning back.

"There was a high possibility His Majesty would have died."

Ryo repeated.

"What do you mean?"

"Remember, right before the attack, His Majesty said something about wanting us to protect Prince Ryun? That sort of thing."

"I still don't get it…"

"When someone says something like that just before a major event, they often end up dying."

Ryo said this with full confidence.

Of course, Abel still didn't understand.

"Is this that whole 'pathos of things' thing you always talk about?"

"Close, but no. This is what's called a classic trope—or a flag."

"I see…there are all kinds of strange ideas."

Abel still didn't understand Ryo's logic…

"Let me explain. For example: 'When this war is over, I'm going back to my village to get married'. Or 'I'll take over the family business when I return'—people who say those things tend to die in the war. That's a flag."

"…That's terrifying."

Abel could understand the logic, but wasn't sure whether to believe it.

Still, if things really did happen that way, it was certainly frightening.

So he responded honestly…

Abel was a good man.

"That's why, keeping silent and taking action is best. Don't say it—just do it. That's also much cooler. So be careful, Abel."

R-right…"

As they talked, they arrived at Emperor Tsuin's chambers.

Inside were Tsuin and four men who were clearly military officers.

When the three entered, Tsuin waved a hand and dismissed the four.

"Ah, Duke Rondo, I've been waiting. I didn't even get a chance to thank you earlier before I was whisked away."

"No, Your Majesty. Your safety is of utmost importance. The actions of those around you were entirely appropriate."

Ryo had seen this in movies and dramas before.

Like when the U.S. President is attacked and the Secret Service moves them.

It's not about the person.

It's about the symbol.

So in such cases, the president's will is ignored.

It was in a similar fashion that Emperor Tsuin had been evacuated…

"There are still many unknowns, but there is one clear fact about the green-haired woman earlier. I wanted to tell you about it."

"Go on."

"She's an Illusionkin."

"An Illusionkin? That word rings a bell…hmm, from where…"

Tsuin stroked his chin in thought.

Ryo helped him out.

"Most likely from Governor Li Wu's report."

"Ah! Li Wu. He sent a report, but it hasn't arrived at the capital yet… Well, that's fine. If I recall, his report mentioned beings called Illusionkins who led monsters. He also said that report came from an adventurer—was that you, Duke Rondo?"

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"I see. That clears things up."

Tsuin nodded deeply.

"An attack with monsters, on the imperial palace no less, and even introducing themselves… a challenge to our Great Darwei, no doubt. But earlier, I asked my ministers, and none had information on this so-called Choouchi Empire. We must investigate further."

The report to Emperor Tsuin concluded without issue.

"A challenge from the Illusionkins… sounds like trouble."

"Internal struggles for the throne, external threats from Illusionkins. Even a superpower isn't immune to instability."

Ryo and Abel shook their heads slightly as they walked back toward their lodgings at Ryusen Residence.

"Our Kingdom of Knightley should also shift toward military expansion!"

"…Huh?"

The Premier Duke urged the King.

"We must have overwhelming military might, so much so that no neighboring country dares to challenge us! That, in turn, will prevent war!"

"I don't entirely disagree… but the kingdom already has considerable military strength. Even in peacetime, it's quite useful."

"Do we really have such forces?"

"Yes. The adventurers."

"Ah…"

The kingdom is a country of adventurers.

Abel had once left the royal family to become an adventurer— so that capable adventurers could be brought in as the kingdom's strength.

"Our friend became king!" …that kind of bond was especially powerful among adventurers.

"From that perspective, Abel, you're a schemer…"

"It's not that elaborate."

"You seduced innocent adventurers and made them dance in the palm of your hand… How terrifying."

"Innocent adventurers? Like Phelps or Gramas?"

Phelps was Phelps A. Heinlein, heir to Marquis Heinlein.

Gramas was Hugh McGrath, the Grandmaster.

Both were adventurers—or former adventurers—but…

"Those two are extreme exceptions!"

Ryo objected loudly.

They were the next Marquis and next Count.

More like core political figures than adventurers.

Indeed, they might be exceptions.

"If you want examples, try Ra-san or the three from 'Room Ten'."

"Well, I suppose they're pure-hearted."

The four Ryo mentioned could certainly be called innocent.

At the very least, more so than the adventurer and Premier Duke currently making an impassioned argument…

"Abel, were you just thinking something rude?"

"Nope? Must be your imagination."

The adventurer-king smoothly dodged the adventurer-duke's accusation.

"Still, I wonder what traits Illusionkins actually have…"

"That came out of nowhere. Traits?"

"You know how Djinns are good with gravity magic or don't die even if you cut off their heads? Or how akumas can appear anywhere using those pitch-black gates…and yeah, they also don't die from decapitation."

"Duke Helb, Grand Duke Atinjo's brother, was a sorcerer. But that woman…Marie, was it? She didn't throw talismans or anything. Maybe she's a magician?"

"Yeah, she felt more like a magician. Hmm…"

Both Abel and Ryo pondered, but there just wasn't enough information to go on.

"Oh right, Duke Helb didn't fly, but Marie flew through the air, didn't she? That part really intrigues me."

"If it's about flying, I can do that too."

Abel said a bit proudly.

"Ah…right, it could be an alchemy tool."

Ryo responded, looking at the flight ring Abel wore on his left hand.

It was a possibility worth considering.

He was also curious about how alchemy had developed in the Eastern countries, including Darwei.

"Abel, let's stay in the imperial capital a bit longer."

"Hm? I don't mind. Apparently, we can't return to the Central countries unless that 'Corridor' thing opens anyway."

"Exactly. And I'm also curious about what His Majesty meant when he asked us to protect Prince Ryun, and the movements of the non-humans are also a concern."

"You're pretty much non-human yourself, Ryo…"

"I am a perfectly ordinary human being."

"R-right…"

Ryo leaned in to assert his point.

Abel, overwhelmed by his intensity, gave in.
