Chapter 0548 Three-Colored
-x-X-x-
"Phew, that took quite a while."
"Yeah, it did."
The two of them had just left the store after obtaining the flying bracelet, the flight ring.
Even though Abel responded to Ryo's comment, Ryo could tell his mind was elsewhere.
Actually, anyone could've noticed just by looking at him.
He was admiring the Flight Ring strapped to his left arm from every possible angle.
Looking absolutely thrilled.
As they walked side by side, Feiwan glanced back and forth between Abel's face and the bracelet with a curious expression.
As expected from his beloved horse— seems like it's interested in whatever its master is into.
"It's nice that it's detachable. But it took over an hour to adjust. Still, I guess that makes it unusable for others, so it's less likely to be stolen. That's a relief."
"Anyone who tries to steal my flight ring, I'll tear them limb from limb."
"Ah…yep…those eyes say you're 100% serious, Abel. Scary…"
Abel's expression had turned frightening in that instant.
Ryo quickly averted his gaze.
It honestly felt like he would tear someone apart for real.
Ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong…
The sound of bells rang from a short distance away.
"Ah, it must be noon. The adjustment took a while, after all. Also, I was shocked when it turned out to cost 30 gold coins apiece. Good thing we could pay directly with the bank card. Darwei is pretty advanced, huh?"
Ryo nodded, impressed.
"Come to think of it, didn't you buy two flight rings?"
Abel had finally torn his attention away from his bracelet enough to ask.
"Yeah, of course. One was adjusted for me. The other, I bought as-is without any modifications."
"To compare them?"
"At first, yeah. But eventually, I plan to take it apart."
The moment Ryo said that, Abel's expression changed.
If it had a name, it would probably be 'Despair'.
"Don't worry. I won't touch your flight ring."
"Good. That's a relief."
Abel relaxed at Ryo's reassurance and returned to his usual tone.
"I'd like to practice flying somewhere…"
"We probably can't around here. Too many people."
"True enough."
The two retraced their steps from earlier in the morning.
Not for any particular reason—just that the plaza with the clock tower seemed to be setting up a lot of food stalls.
When they passed by earlier, it was just past 10 AM and most were still preparing. But now it was lunchtime.
Surely, most of them were open.
"I'm starving now."
"Well, it's lunchtime. Let's grab something to eat."
"Let's do that. Oh, and after we eat, how about heading to an inn early? If it's a big one, it'll probably have a courtyard or backyard. You could practice flying there."
"Ryo, you're a genius!"
Abel praised him happily.
But then he glanced around, starting to look uneasy.
"There's a lot of people, what if there's no vacancy at any of the inns…?"
Yes—they had experienced that once before.
Back when they couldn't get an inn because of the imperial wedding and ended up sleeping outdoors…
Now, with Princess Shio Fen's wedding drawing near, people were gathering in the imperial capital from all over the empire.
They remembered being told that when they boarded the cargo ship.
Which meant… there might not be any rooms left.
"We probably won't find any budget inns available."
"Seriously…?"
"But in a city this big, the high-class inns should still have vacancies. If it's just one or two nights, we can manage. Besides, only those kinds of places would have enough open space for you to practice flying."
"That's true… high-class inns rarely fill up completely."
Abel was the king, after all.
And a former A-rank adventurer to boot.
He was used to staying in luxury inns.
He knew from experience that big-city high-end inns are rarely fully booked.
Because there were almost no walk-in customers like Ryo and Abel.
People who could afford them—wealthy or important folks—stayed there in groups.
And typically made reservations ahead of time.
"Oh yeah, we got that flying instruction manual from the store, right?"
"Ah, that ten-page booklet? I already read and memorized it."
"…You've gotta be kidding."
Ryo brought up the manual, only for Abel to casually mention he'd already memorized it.
Apparently, he'd done so while they were adjusting the bracelet.
"That document-reading stamina trained by mountains of paperwork is terrifying…"
Abel's reading ability, honed through endless official paperwork, was no joke.
While chatting like that, the two passed in front of the clock tower.
"There you are!"
A voice called out from somewhere.
Naturally, they didn't think it was directed at them and kept walking.
"Hey, wait!"
This time, someone stood directly in front of Abel.
A man in reddish clothes.
"Huh? Who are you?"
"Uh? Don't play dumb!"
When Abel tilted his head and asked, the red-clad man flew into a rage.
That's when Ryo remembered.
He leaned over to whisper to Abel.
"Hey, he's the guy who picked a fight and told you to meet him at Holy Emperor Plaza at noon."
"Ryo, you got into a fight? That's rough."
"Why me?! He picked a fight with you, Abel!"
"Huh? I'd never do that. Getting this bracelet was my top priority."
Abel beamed as he looked at the bracelet on his left wrist.
"Yeah, and to get it as fast as possible, you brushed him off without thinking."
Ryo shook his head slightly as he said this.
"Found you!"
Another voice rang out from behind them.
Abel didn't even turn around.
Of course, he thought it had nothing to do with him.
But Ryo knew better.
After red comes…
"You made me wait over an hour! We bumped into each other right here, and I should've just—!"
It was a man in yellow clothes.
The same guy who had dropped all those eggs.
Right here in this plaza.
By now, even Ryo understood.
This plaza in front of the clock tower— this was Holy Emperor Plaza.
And if there was red and yellow, then of course…
"There you are! You're not getting away!"
Shouted the third man, appearing in blue clothes.
Red, yellow, and blue. The three primary colors had assembled.
"Huh?"
The three of them looked at each other in confusion.
"Gaji?"
"Guza?"
"Gobo?"
Apparently, those were their names.
Ryo couldn't tell who was who.
"What are you guys doing?"
"I've got business with that redhead over there."
"I'm here to get revenge for the eggs!"
Only the last one made sense to Ryo.
"But seriously, to pick a fight with all of us… that redhead must be a real idiot."
"You're not getting out of this alive."
"We'll stomp you flat—just like those eggs."
Finally, Ryo pieced it all together.
"Abel, I get it now. This isn't a story where someone bumps into a guy and it turns into a fight."
"Hm?"
"This is the advanced form—the Three Musketeers scenario!"
"Yeah… I still have no idea what you're talking about."
'The Three Musketeers'—a pinnacle of French swashbuckling literature.
Written by Alexandre Dumas, who also penned 'The Count of Monte Cristo'…
Actually, The Three Musketeers is just the first part of the 'D'Artagnan Romances' trilogy.
Part 1: The Three Musketeers
Part 2: Twenty Years After
Part 3: The Vicomte of Bragelonne
As the title The d'Artagnan Romances suggests, the protagonist throughout the entire series is d'Artagnan, a young man who leaves his rural hometown of Gascony and comes to Paris.
At first, when d'Artagnan arrives in Paris, he gets into several altercations and ends up challenging three men to duels… those three turn out to be Athos, Porthos, and Aramis—three elite members of the Musketeers.
They are famously known as The Three Musketeers.
Yes—the story begins with a showdown: d'Artagnan versus the Three Musketeers!
And that's what popped into Ryo's head.
"Abel, those three must be some of the strongest fighters representing the Imperial Capital!"
"Is that so~?"
Abel responded to Ryo's hopeful words with a doubtful glance toward the three.
The three men seemed to be discussing who would go first.
"Hurry up and come at me. I'll take all three of you on at once."
Abel said, clearly annoyed.
"Condescending little prick!"
"How dare you mess with us!"
"We'll take you down!"
The three of them drew their swords.
"Even three-on-two, I won't hold back."
"Two?"
One of the men shouted, and Abel tilted his head in confusion.
He turned around—and then he understood.
Apparently, Ryo had been counted in too.
"Oh, Ryo… this robe guy is just here to watch. I'll handle you all myself."
"…Huh?"
"If this robe joined in, you'd all be down in less than a second."
"Don't mess with us! "
Ryo had noticed.
One of them had only been shouting "Don't mess with us!" this whole time.
But wisely, he chose not to say it out loud.
Ryo's role, along with Andalusia and Feiwan, was to stay away from the four.
Of course, the one human and two horses would observe Abel's performance from the safety of the
"Go!"
The three men lunged forward.
It truly happened in an instant.
A red flash streaked past.
The three collapsed.
"Knew it—they weren't that tough after all."
Abel murmured, shaking his head slightly.
Collapsed on the ground were the three men in red, yellow, and blue.
One was clutching his stomach, one his head, and the last one lay flat on his back. He seemed to be unconscious.
The surrounding civilians probably couldn't comprehend what had just happened.
That's how fast it was.
But Ryo had seen it clearly.
"He took them all down with the hilt of his sword…"
He struck one in the solar plexus with the hilt, bashed another on the back of the head, and uppercut the third's chin—with the hilt.
"What was that… Abel's swordsmanship was ridiculously sharp—for no real reason."
"Don't say 'for no reason'."
Abel replied with a grimace as Ryo approached.
"So, was this that Three Musketeers thing you mentioned earlier?"
"No, that was a fantasy. There's no way these weaklings could match that."
"Thought so."
Abel walked toward one of the three men.
"Hey."
"Eek! "
"He's really scared."
Abel called out, the man in yellow yelped, and Ryo stated the obvious.
"In the Imperial Capital, what's the fanciest inn with the largest garden?"
"…Huh?"
"Someplace with enough garden space to practice with flight rings."
"Th-that would be the Ryusen Residence… It's expensive, but they have massive training grounds…Merchants with private guards, or lords, usually stay there…"
"Oh? Sounds good. Take us there."
"Wha…"
Abel said it casually, but the man in yellow looked like it was the end of the world.
"Who caused all this trouble?"
"…We did."
"Yup, that's right. Normally, in a case like this, what do you do?"
"…Apologize?"
"Yup, that's right. Show some sincerity and apologize. In this case, sincerity means showing us the way. Do that, and I'll forgive you."
"Really?"
"Yeah, I promise."
The negotiation ended.
The man in yellow led the way, guiding the two people and two horses.
"Abel, you're really good at intimidation."
"Don't say it like that. Back in my adventuring days, I used to interrogate captured bandits and such. Compared to that, I was being nice."
"Who was the scariest interrogator in the 'Crimson Sword'…?"
"Rihya."
Abel answered Ryo's question immediately.
Apparently, the current queen is pretty terrifying.
"By the way, we were being watched earlier, right?"
"You noticed too, Abel?"
"Yeah. Those ten soldiers on the ship, right?"
The ten soldiers who had been on the same ship were watching Abel's fight with the red, yellow, and blue men from a short distance away.
They hadn't made any moves, so they were left alone…
"But those ten are way stronger than the three-colored guys."
"Three-colored… that's a terrible way to refer to them."
The three—the man in yellow leading now, and the red and blue ones—had earned that nickname, it seemed.
The group of three people and two horses walked for about fifteen minutes.
"We've walked quite a bit."
"Yeah. But there are still a lot of people around."
As Abel said, there were many shops and many people.
The Imperial Capital itself must be huge and densely populated.
"There it is."
Finally, the man in yellow spoke.
They could now see a grand gate in the distance.
"Whoa, that really does look impressive."
"Good for you, Abel."
Abel looked impressed, and Ryo nodded.
"W-well, I'll be off then."
"Hold up."
As the yellow-clad man tried to sneak away, Abel stopped him.
He took something from his pocket and tossed it to him.
"A tip. Thanks. But seriously, stop picking fights."
"G-Gold coin! Are you sure!?"
"Yeah. See ya."
Apparently, Abel gave him a gold coin as a thank-you.
"Abel, that's too generous."
"Really? We might not've made it here on our own. Compared to you buying two flight rings, it's not a big deal, right?"
"I think those are two completely different things…"
Anyway, the two and their two horses were now able to enter a lodging in the Imperial Capital.
-x-X-x-
At the Ryusen Residence, there is a vast training ground on the premises.
To put it into perspective, it's about the size of two 400-meter tracks.
The area is exclusively for guests and can be used freely.
Because of the high accommodation fees, most of the guests staying there were wealthy merchants or local lords.
Although they rarely use the training grounds, those who protect them never miss their daily training…
You could call it a sign of professional pride.
Over the past few days, several major merchants and local lords, along with their entourages, have been staying at the 'Ryusen Residence'.
Naturally, this is due to the arrival of Princess Shio Fen, who is to become the official consort of the Sixth Prince, Ryun, and the related wedding events.
The imperial palace and surrounding areas, where the wedding-related events will take place, are about a ten-minute walk from here.
That's not exactly close.
If proximity were the only factor, there are plenty of other inns.
However, a ten-minute walk is, in a way, just the right distance.
If it were too close, it would be easier to be watched, and harder to move around freely.
Additionally, many of the guests staying at 'Ryusen Residence' have brought large entourages with them.
For them, the training grounds, large baths, and other facilities are very convenient for relaxation.
Naturally, when these groups stay in the same place for several days, they start to recognize each other's faces.
And so, they noticed—
New guests had arrived yesterday.
One group consisted of ten warriors.
Apparently, they were newly arrived retainers of one of the lords already staying here.
But the other group…was just two men.
A foreign man in a black cloak and a man in a robe. Just who were they…?
Since morning, a lone swordsman had been practicing at the edge of the training grounds.
Though he was a swordsman, he wasn't swinging a sword.
"Hup!"
With a shout full of spirit, his body floated up.
And then, forward…
Zaa—!
"Ugh…"
Abel fell over.
"You were really close! Actually, you were floating, and even flying for a bit."
Ryo cheered him on.
"Right? It felt like I was getting the hang of it!"
Though he kept falling, Abel's face was lit with joy.
Flying through the sky—something he had dreamed of.
And now, it was slowly becoming a reality. Of course he was thrilled.
Even though it started this morning… they had actually been practicing on and off since arriving at the inn yesterday afternoon.
"Still, I'm impressed that you haven't run out of magic despite all this practice. Is it because of how amazing the flight ring is, or do you actually have a lot of magic power…?"
"Didn't you say something about magic being connected to gravity the other day?"
"Yeah, well, that's true… But the magic power used to draw in gravity from extra dimensions acts kind of like a primer, and that part, I think, still comes from within your own body. So I figured anyone would run out of magic eventually if they overdid it."
"Huh…I don't really get it."
With that, Abel turned his attention back to flying practice.
(Rather than thinking about things he doesn't understand, he chooses to move his body…classic muscle-head behavior.)
"Ryo, were you just thinking something rude?"
"N-No, not at all! Come on, focus on your training!"
Even in a moment like this, Abel's sharp instincts made Ryo flustered.
Of course, Abel didn't really mind and went right back to practicing flight with the bracelet.
People can keep doing the things they love.
Even if others say they're not getting results or making progress, it doesn't matter.
They keep at it anyway.
Why? Because they love it. Because it's fun.
And if you keep at it, you improve.
Yes, you will improve if you keep going.
That's an absolute truth.
Even if it doesn't seem like you're improving, you are.
It's okay.
Just keep going with confidence.
Because one day, the results will suddenly appear.
No one really knows why, but that's just how people are built.
That's just how it is.
You can't change it.
So just keep going.
You'll definitely get better.
People who say, "I'm not improving," or, "I'm not seeing results," are usually saying that because they didn't get the result they wanted at the moment they wanted it.
In a match.
On an exam.
During a trial.
Yes, you might not make it in time for the moment you hoped for.
But that doesn't mean you haven't improved.
It just means the speed of your improvement wasn't fast enough.
Don't get that wrong.
Absolutely, if people continue, they will improve.
That's how we are made.
And in front of Ryo's eyes stood a swordsman who was about to seize his results.
That evening—
Abel finally succeeded in flying.
"Congratulations, Abel!"
"Thanks!"
Ryo clapped, and Abel smiled from ear to ear.
He only got about ten centimeters off the ground.
But he stayed in the air and flew fifty meters in a straight line without touching the ground.
According to the training manual, once you can do that consistently, you can start working on turning, quick stops, and even high-altitude flight.
In other words, Abel had taken the first real step toward full, free flight!
"We should celebrate tonight!"
"Yeah, let's eat whatever you want in the dining hall! It's my treat!"
"Abel… You know that everything's already included in the lodging fee, right? So technically, it's not your treat."
"You figured that out quick."
"Stealing my role as the comic relief on a celebratory day…how dare you."
For now, the two of them took a nice, refreshing bath and headed to the dining hall.
It was around 6 PM, so it wasn't too crowded yet.
Though they called it a dining hall, it wasn't like a regular town tavern—it was more like the main dining room of a luxury hotel.
Even the guards of the merchants and lords used it, but they were clearly well-trained. No one got overly drunk or caused a ruckus.
"I get the feeling that all the guards here are really professional."
"What do you mean, professional?"
"I mean, there aren't any rowdy, unruly types like adventurers."
Ryo's judgmental bias came out in full force.
"…You do remember we're adventurers too, right?"
"We'll have to be careful not to stand out in the wrong way."
Abel and Ryo were technically adventurers—but they were also a king and a duke.
So when the situation called for it, they could act with proper manners.
All hail education!
The two entered the 'Ryusen Residence' dining hall.
Just like the night before, the host began to guide them to their table…
"Huh?"
Ryo couldn't help but let the words slip out.
"What's wrong?"
Abel asked.
Following Ryo's gaze.
Ryo was looking toward a strange, black, three-legged table in the back of the dining hall.
Although it was being called a table, it was slightly taller than an ordinary one.
"No way…a grand piano?"
Ryo's muttered words just barely reached Abel's ears.
Of course, it was an unfamiliar word to him.
"Um, excuse me."
Ryo called out to the man guiding them.
"Could we sit near that…thing?"
He pointed to the black, oddly shaped table.
The one he had just referred to as a grand piano.
"Certainly."
The man nodded and led the two of them to a table near the object.
"Ryo?"
"Abel, when we had dinner here last night, was that thing there?"
"No, I didn't see it. Must've been hidden behind the curtains."
"Which means, if it's out tonight…it's probably going to be used."
Ryo looked excited.
"Do you know what that is, Ryo? I heard you say something like 'grand' something earlier."
"Yes. I think it's a grand piano. At least, it looks exactly like one…though the lid is closed, so I can't be completely sure."
"Grand piano? What's that?"
"It's a musical instrument."
"Huh…"
Upon hearing the word instrument, Abel gave the object a good look.
No matter the shape, all musical instruments had one thing in common:
They produced sound.
But no matter how he looked at it, Abel couldn't figure out how this thing could make a sound.
Well, there was one possibility…
"You could hit it with your hands and it might make a noise."
"…The part you're thinking of hitting is the lid, Abel. That's not how you use it."
For some reason, Abel was playing the fool and Ryo had to play the straight man.
It was usually Ryo's job to be the funny one, so he felt slightly robbed—but let it slide.
"Ah, anyway, let's order dinner first. This is your celebration, after all. The piano isn't going anywhere."
"Yeah, sounds good."
Even if they were curious about the piano, they were also hungry.
And they definitely wanted to celebrate Abel's success in flying.
So for now—dinner comes first!
While the two of them enjoyed their meal at a more leisurely pace than usual, more guests began to fill the dining hall.
And then, finally…
"Oh?"
Abel noticed something and let out a small sound.
That prompted Ryo to look up as well.
A well-dressed woman had entered the room.
She walked over and opened the lid of the grand piano.
Reflected in the polished inner lid were rows of strings, clearly visible now.
"Ah, I knew it. It's exactly like the grand pianos I know."
Ryo said with clear delight.
"Wow. So it really is an instrument. But it's huge. No way you could carry it around."
"Exactly. It weighs several hundred kilograms. They don't exist in the Central Countries, do they?"
"Never heard of one like that."
Abel nodded at Ryo's question.
Abel could play the violin.
In fact, by Ryo's standards, he was talented enough to be called a master.
Apparently, members of the Knightley royal family were trained to play from childhood, and Abel still kept up with it…
So if even Abel—someone with deep knowledge of music—had never seen or heard of a piano, then it likely didn't exist in the Central Nations.
In the first place, why there was a piano in 'Phi' to begin with was the real mystery…
Soon enough, the woman began to play.
It was background music for dinner.
It didn't interrupt conversations. It enhanced appetite and created a pleasant atmosphere.
It wasn't a showy performance meant to steal the spotlight—but rather, one that gently uplifted those present.
In that sense, it was a truly wonderful performance.
Of course, it was a song Ryo didn't recognize.
Most likely, it had been composed here in 'Phi'.
The piano might have been recreated in this world…probably by a reincarnated individual, but the music itself was an original creation of 'Phi'.
A fusion of Earth's culture and the culture of 'Phi'.
It was, without a doubt, a beautiful experience.
"Nice."
Abel murmured, and Ryo nodded in agreement.
Good music is good, no matter who's listening.
And so, the two let themselves be carried away by the gentle sounds of the piano…
-x-X-x-
The next morning.
At the edge of the training ground, Abel was, as usual, practicing his flying skills.
Next to him, Ryo had set up an ice table and chair, and was peering into the magic formula of the flight ring he had purchased.
Of course, under normal circumstances, it wouldn't be possible to view the magic formula of a product like this.
But Ryo was a man who practiced alchemy as a hobby.
He was skilled in a certain kind of reverse engineering.
Especially during his time studying under the top-class alchemist in the Western Countries, Neil Andersen, he had been shown techniques for analyzing golem magic formulas.
Those experiences significantly deepened Ryo's understanding of alchemy.
Gaining experience may very well be the fastest way to improve one's abilities.
"I had already figured out that it wraps your entire body in wind-attribute magic…but this bracelet also constantly blows wind downward from four points to maintain posture… That's very similar to a quadcopter…what's commonly known as a drone."
On Earth in the 21st century, drones developed into two main types: multicopters or quadcopters with three or more propellers, and airplane-shaped models.
Among these, the quadcopter type, which floats by sending air downward from four blades, has a similar principle.
To put it simply, by adjusting the rotation speed of the blades, it can freely move forward, backward, and side to side.
Thus, there's no need for a tail fin.
This flight ring seems to follow the same basic concept, adjusting the airflow from four points to move around.
"It's very simple. Precisely because of that, it's incredibly reliable and unlikely to malfunction. Whoever developed this is amazing!"
"Oh? Did you figure something out?"
Abel reacted to Ryo's spontaneous comment.
"I did, but…I don't think there's any point in explaining it to you. Just learn with your body."
"I feel like you just seriously insulted me…"
"Not at all. Everyone learns best in the way that suits them. That's all I meant."
"…Sure."
Ryo spoke confidently, but Abel gave him a skeptical look.
At that moment, three people approached them.
Of course, both of them noticed.
They didn't recognize the person in front, but they did know the two people walking behind him—a man and a woman.
Well, more accurately, they didn't know their names.
But they were two of the ten people who had arrived on the same ship…
"Good day. May we interrupt for a moment?"
The man in the lead looked to be about fifty years old.
He wasn't a merchant—most likely a local lord.
He addressed them politely.
"Oh, yes, please go ahead."
Ryo responded and conjured four ice chairs.
With ice cushions included, they were surprisingly comfortable.
Abel sat next to Ryo.
The lord sat across from them, and the two soldiers sat to his left and right.
Both were a little surprised when Ryo conjured the ice chairs.
And even more surprised once they actually sat on them.
"I am Von Debout, in service to Count Matan."
The lord introduced himself with a polite bow.
"I'm Ryo of the Kingdom of Knightley. And this is… Abel of the same."
Unusually, Ryo took the lead in introductions.
Even including the name of their kingdom.
"The Kingdom of Knightley…that would be one of the Central Countries? Hmm…I had gathered that you were foreigners, but I didn't realize you came from so far away."
"You know of the kingdom?"
"Not exactly—my apologies, I don't know much. But I've heard of it in bard songs. They've been sung often here in Darwei over the past year."
"Oh, really?"
Ryo nodded, clearly pleased by Von Debout's words.
He felt a quiet pride in the growing reputation of his homeland.
Abel, on the other hand, kept a neutral expression.
"Forgive me, but I heard the two of you are adventurers…"
"Yes, that's true. Though I won't ask who told you that."
Von Debout spoke with a smile, and Ryo replied in kind.
Those with power can easily obtain personal information.
"Since you are adventurers, I came to ask if you might be willing to work for me."
"You want to hire us?"
Ryo glanced at the two seated beside Von Debout.
That glance alone conveyed his thoughts clearly to Von Debout.
"Yes. These two are my guards. But I need more protection."
"I see."
"It's a bit embarrassing to admit, but…I was recently attacked."
"What…?!"
"I hastily summoned these guys from my domain. But I was told even that wasn't enough… Hiring guards in the imperial capital is difficult. You never know who might be in someone's pocket."
Von Debout delivered his unsettling story with a calm smile.
"So, trustworthy people are hard to find…?"
"Everyone is questionable to some degree."
"Ah…so if everyone's uncertain, you figured you might as well go with us."
"Not that bluntly, but yes."
Von Debout replied with a wry smile to Ryo's blunt phrasing.
"You see, these two accompanied you on the same ship."
"Yes, I remember. They were also watching us in the square the other day."
"Exactly. They vouched for your abilities."
"But what if we were the attackers?"
"Guests of the Ryusen Residence being the culprits? That seems…highly unlikely."
Von Debout smiled as he answered Ryo's hypothetical.
Apparently, attackers weren't the wealthy type.
Assassins like Golgo 13 didn't seem to exist in Darwei…
"And last night, the two of you were listening to the piano performance. This is just my impression, but I felt you came from a well-educated and noble background. I have a good eye for people, you see."
Von Debout smiled and declared this confidently.
Ryo and Abel exchanged glances.
It would be hard to deny that outright…
To be honest, Ryo wasn't sure how to respond.
So he looked at Abel and gave a small shake of his head.
Abel nodded slightly and took over the conversation.
"You want to hire us as guards, but we're not going to stay in the capital forever."
"Of course, that's understandable. I only need protection for ten days. Five days from now, the wedding ceremony for the sixth prince, Ryun-sama, will be held at the royal palace. Then, seven days from now, there will be a public celebration for the citizens of the capital. After that, in ten days, we will leave the capital and return to the Matan domain. I'm asking for your service during that time—how about it?"
Neither Ryo nor Abel had any knowledge of the schedule for the royal wedding or formal procession.
So getting that information was a helpful bonus.
"What are the terms?"
"I will cover the entire cost of your stay here at the Ryusen Residence. In addition, how does 100,000 Jang per person per day sound? That would be ten gold coins each."
"Specifically, where and how are we expected to guard you?"
"I'd like you to provide escort within the Ryusen Residence and during travel to and from the Imperial Palace. The primary responsibility will fall on Wei Fon and his group…I'd like you to assist them."
Von Debout glanced at the male soldier seated to his right.
It seemed his name was Wei Fon.
He certainly gave off the aura of someone highly skilled.
"I see. I'd like to talk it over a bit…"
"Of course. Please let me know once you've decided."
With that, Von Debout and his guards left.
Ryo and Abel were left to discuss things.
"Abel, our luck has finally turned!"
For some reason, Ryo was excited.
"Why are you so excited…?"
Abel didn't understand at all.
"It's a protection job from someone important!"
"Well, yeah, I guess."
"And he said he's already been attacked!"
"Yeah, he did mention that."
"Isn't it strange that he still wants to hire us under those conditions?!"
Ryo dramatically pointed at Abel.
It wasn't like Abel had said anything odd.
But Ryo was clearly playing the part of a prosecutor exposing corruption.
"Strange? He just said he's short on manpower, right?"
Abel, entirely unfazed, responded like always.
"I'm sure we're about to become pawns in Von Debout's grand conspiracy!"
"…What?"
"He's planning to assassinate the Emperor of Darwei and frame us for it!"
Of course, this was just one of Ryo's usual wild fantasies.
Yes—this was typical Ryo.
"You never cease to amaze, Ryo. Your imagination just never runs dry, huh?"
"Why do you sound kind of exasperated?!"
"I just… really don't get it, that's all."
"You'll regret it after the trap's been sprung!"
Abel shook his head, while Ryo puffed up his cheeks indignantly like a cartoon character.
"So…should we turn the job down then?"
"Absolutely not! Let's take it!"
"Huh? I thought taking the job meant we'd fall into a trap?"
Abel didn't believe any of Ryo's conspiracy theories, but he also didn't feel a strong need to take the job.
Sure, having accommodation fully covered and ten gold coins a day per person was tempting.
But it wasn't like they were desperate for money.
Still, Ryo insisted on taking the job.
"You can't catch a tiger cub without entering its den! We must dive headfirst and tear the roots out of this conspiracy!"
"I don't fully get it, but if you want to take it, sure."
"You can never have too much money."
"Yeah… can't argue with that."
And so, the two of them decided to accept Count Von Debout of Matan's request for protection.
-x-X-x-
Von Debout would enter the imperial palace at eight in the morning and leave at six in the evening.
He had been keeping this schedule until the attack occurred. After that, it seems he secluded himself in the Ryusen Residence.
However, now that Ryo and Abel have been assigned as his bodyguards, Wei Fon, who leads the guards, has permitted him to return to his previous schedule.
"Wei Fon-san is the one with the most power…"
"Well, Ryo, even if you think so, you shouldn't say it out loud."
Abel warned Ryo gently.
"I wouldn't have been allowed to take my job either if Marquis Heinlein had said no…"
"But that's just because the Prime Minister outranks you, right?"
"I… am the king, you know…"
"A king is just a figurehead, carried around on a palanquin. You shouldn't get the wrong idea."
"I see… so I was mistaken."
Apparently, even His Majesty the King has had his struggles.
On the third day of their assignment as bodyguards.
Ryo and Abel were waiting outside the imperial palace along with the rest of the guard detail.
In simple terms, it was a waiting area for attendants and guards while their masters were inside.
Lower-ranking officials didn't have attendants, but nobles or high officials like Von Debout did.
This class was referred to as the 'Shitaifu class'.
There were quite a few of them, along with a significant number of attendants.
In times like this—when the wedding of a crown prince's official consort was taking place—the number of people inside the palace increased drastically.
Naturally, so did the number of people waiting outside.
There were different types of waiting areas, but the one they were using was a large gymnasium-like space where multiple groups could wait together.
Since Von Debout entered the palace in the morning and came out in the evening, their wait was long.
But others only stayed for about thirty minutes.
Ryo glanced around, somewhat exaggeratedly.
Then quickly sat down next to the leader, Wei Fon.
"Something the matter, Ryo-san?"
Although Wei Fon always had a stern expression and never compromised on his duties, he spoke politely to Ryo and Abel.
Always adding '-san' to their names.
"Yes. There's something I want to clarify regarding our bodyguard duties."
"What is it?"
Wei Fon encouraged Ryo to continue.
Abel came to sit next to Ryo as well.
Ready to stop him if needed.
"I heard that three princes are competing for the imperial throne. Which faction does Von Debout belong to?"
"Hey, Ryo!"
Abel raised his voice, shocked by how blunt the question was.
Certainly, it might be important information for a bodyguard— but it wasn't something a hired guard should be casually asking.
Wei Fon narrowed his eyes at Ryo.
"Hm."
He stared for a minute before speaking.
"My lord is not affiliated with any faction."
"Huh?"
Ryo was surprised.
"Is that… even possible? I mean, wouldn't he be subject to harassment from the princes' factions? And if he's not aligned with anyone, no one would protect him in such cases, which could be a big problem…"
"I understand what you're saying, Ryo-san. And in the Darwei Imperial Palace, that is not unusual."
"If that's the case…"
"That's why he was attacked."
"…Ah, I see…"
Von Debout had previously mentioned being attacked.
Of course, no one knew exactly who was behind it.
But it wasn't hard to imagine.
It was likely one of the three princes vying for the throne.
Or someone from their factions.
They may have tried to force Von Debout to join their side through intimidation.
Or it might have been a warning to others who refused to align themselves.
In any case, in a cutthroat factional struggle, remaining neutral was the most dangerous position.
Because in a crisis, no one would protect you.
Because you could be made an example of.
Because… you could even be framed…
"Anyone related to Count Matan! Present? Is anyone here connected to Count Matan?!"
Count Matan was Von Debout.
"I'm one of Count Matan's guards!"
Wei Fon stood up, raising his hand and calling out.
Not only Ryo and Abel, but the other nine guards also stood up.
"There's a problem! Count Matan has been detained in the imperial palace!"
"What?!"
The situation had taken a sudden turn.
"Any updates?"
"Yes, some."
The reply came from a female guard who had gone to gather information from the palace.
Her name was Nuan, and she held a vice-captain role.
"It appears the lord suddenly attacked Count Bashu with a sword."
"…What are you saying? The lord doesn't carry a sword. He doesn't even have a dagger on him."
Wei Fon frowned in response.
"Yes. Supposedly, he took a sword from the Imperial Guard and attacked. Many witnesses saw it happen…"
"Ridiculous…"
Wei Fon spat.
After that, no one said a word.
Abel broke the silence.
"How skilled… is Lord Von Debout with a sword?"
"Oh, not at all. He's a just and honest man who works hard, but when it comes to swordplay, archery, or magic, he's completely hopeless. That's why we guard him…"
"And this man supposedly stole a sword from the Imperial Guard? That's the emperor's elite force, right?"
"Yes, Abel, you're correct."
Abel posed the question to Ryo, and Ryo nodded.
The Imperial Guard were the emperor's personal elite troops.
"Indeed… Even if he caught them off guard, it would be impossible for him."
Wei Fon said, and the other nine guards nodded.
Von Debout clearly wasn't suited for combat at all.
"So what's happening to the detained lord?"
"He was taken to the high-security prison."
"What on earth is going on…?"
The group of guards fell into silent contemplation.
Abel noticed Ryo tilting his head, deep in thought.
"What is it, Ryo?"
"If my memory is correct, the victim, Count Bashu…"
"Count Bashu… Bashu… ah! That would be Lord Roche Ten!"
Count Bashu, Roche Ten, was the nephew of Deputy Magistrate Fu Ten of Boago.
The two of them had once met the Inspector Li Wu in the city of Nomon.
So they weren't complete strangers.
"You two know Count Bashu?"
"Yes, we owed him a favor not long ago."
"Since Roche Ten's domain of Bashu is far from the capital, maybe his guards or attendants are waiting somewhere too?"
Wei Fon asked, Abel answered, and Ryo started looking for a lead.
"It seems Count Bashu wasn't injured."
Nuan reported.
"If he was attacked, he must have been shaken. He likely returned to his inn for the day. The interrogation by the Censorate will probably be tomorrow or later."
"If we can find the inn, maybe we can ask him directly what happened?"
Ryo suggested based on Wei Fon's deduction.
"Yes, that would make sense. Count Bashu, as the victim, knows best what really happened. But… will he meet with retainers of the accused attacker?"
"We'll try to convince him…"
"You'll go, then?"
"Yes, of course."
Ryo gave a firm nod to Wei Fon's question.
Abel also nodded beside him.
Though they had only known Von Debout for a few days, he was still their employer.
And no matter what insults he may have suffered, neither of them believed he was the kind of man who would steal a sword from the Imperial Guard and attack someone.
That's why they were determined to find out what really happened.
Especially since there were supposedly many witnesses…
"Alright. Let's split up and find the inn where Count Bashu is staying. Once we find it, I'll have you two go speak with him."
With that, Wei Fon gave the order, and Ryo and Abel nodded in unison.
-x-X-x-
"Abel, what a terrible thing to happen."
"It certainly is."
"When you do a 'Denchuu de gozaru~', it can only lead to tragedy afterward."
"Denchuu? That phrase… I vaguely remember hearing it once before…"
Once, inside the carriage heading to Twilight Land, Ryo had muttered the phrase 'Denchuu de gozaru~'… and it seems Abel had remembered that. As expected of a king.
That said, the actual story of Lord Asano Naganori of the Ako domain and Lord Kira Yoshinaka wouldn't make any sense to Abel.
Denchuu de gozaru is generally associated with the Chushingura tale, or more precisely, the sword incident in the Edo Castle's Pine Corridor (Matsu no Roka).
During the Edo period, Lord Asano attacked Lord Kira with a ceremonial dagger in the Pine Corridor of Edo Castle.
Naturally, it wasn't a weapon that could kill someone, and even though Kira was wounded on his shoulder and around his eyebrow, they were minor injuries needing only a few stitches.
Looking at it calmly, it's difficult to understand why Lord Asano attacked him.
As a result, the Ako domain was abolished.
Its samurai became ronin, and their families were left adrift.
The consequences were clear—causing a disturbance, let alone drawing a weapon inside Edo Castle, would obviously lead to disaster.
And yet… he did it anyway.
Many theories and stories have arisen over the years, and it's a tale still passed down even centuries later…
Incidentally, the phrase 'Denchuu de gozaru' that Ryo uses comes from a famous scene…
Asano was restrained from behind by Kajikawa Yoritomo, who shouted, "Denchuu de gozaru! Lord Asano, denchuu de gozaru!"
However…
In Kajikawa Yoritomo's own journal, 'Kajikawa Nikki', there's no record of him shouting such a thing.
Nor is there any mention of him restraining Asano from behind.
Perhaps both truth and facts are easily swept away by the tides of history…
Ryo thought about such things, but now he had to explain 'Denchuu de gozaru' to the swordsman in front of him.
And to keep it simple.
"It means drawing your sword where you're absolutely not supposed to—and even going so far as to attack someone."
"Ah… I see. But it's hard to believe Lord Von Debout would do such a thing."
"Exactly. Von Debout is a good man."
Ryo agreed with Abel's confusion.
"Wait, didn't you once say he was trying to frame us for an assassination attempt on the Emperor of Darwei? That he'd use us as scapegoats for his political schemes?"
"What era are you talking about? That fear was dispelled a long time ago!"
"You mean three days ago?"
Ryo looked flustered and indignant, while Abel just looked a bit exasperated.
Business as usual.
"Von Debout is a good man. He even gives us pocket money sometimes!"
"Come to think of it, yesterday on the way back, he gave you some cash for snacks…"
Indeed, on the way back from the royal palace yesterday, Ryo had been eyeing a beef skewer food stall.
Von Debout gave him a gold coin and told him to buy skewers for everyone.
And that he could keep the change.
Needless to say, Ryo was overjoyed.
Even after buying everyone's skewers, he had plenty of change left over. So, yes—he got a nice allowance…
He treats them and gives them pocket money.
How could such a wonderful employer possibly be a bad person?
"Abel, you ate those skewers too, didn't you? They were delicious, right? It's all thanks to Lord Von Debout. Such an employer deserves due respect."
"Yeah… I won't argue with that."
Ryo spoke passionately, and Abel accepted it.
A meal and a night's lodging form a bond!
Naturally, Ryo would act for someone like Von Debout, who even paid for their lodging.
"We've found out where Lord Bashu is staying."
The guards who had been investigating returned.
"It's the 'Moonlight Banquet Pavilion' facing the Holy Emperor Plaza."
Nuan reported.
The Holy Emperor Plaza— where Abel had once defeated the Three Colors—is well known for its clock tower.
"I know the place. Ryo and I will go."
"All right, I'm counting on you."
Wei Fon frowned.
It was painful to rely on newly hired help when they themselves couldn't act.
"Since the Lord himself struck out, as his retainers, it would be unwise for us to loiter near Lord Bashu. We'll wait here—report back to this holding area."
"Understood."
All ten of the guards, including Wei Fon, bowed deeply.
Abel and Ryo nodded in return, then left for the Holy Emperor Plaza.
The Holy Emperor Plaza was spacious.
It was often used as a meeting place for citizens of the imperial capital, so it was always crowded.
Still, the 'Moonlight Banquet Pavilion' was easy to find.
There weren't too many people directly in front of the Pavilion.
True, compared to the surrounding shops and inns, there seemed to be more foot traffic, but perhaps it was because the entrance was wide and large by design.
It didn't give off a particularly congested feeling.
Ryo and Abel peeked their heads in to look inside.
"There are quite a few people inside."
"Yeah. That looks like… an argument?"
When Ryo and Abel looked in, just past the entrance, several people were loudly arguing.
But upon closer inspection, it seemed that one person was standing with arms outstretched, blocking the others from entering.
"Looks like he's stopping people who came to visit."
"He's probably saying something like 'Lord Roche Ten is not in a condition to receive guests yet'. Must be one of his retainers."
"That's a problem for us. We came to visit him…"
"They probably won't let us through."
Ryo and Abel let out a sigh.
"Well, we can't just turn back like this."
"True, but… what do you suggest?"
"We'll use the usual trick."
"Usual trick?"
Ryo said confidently, but Abel couldn't recall anything of the sort.
Had they ever had a foolproof method they always used?
"While you launch a solo charge and draw everyone's attention, I'll sneak in from the back…"
"Rejected."
"Why?!"
"I'll get hauled off to the Censorate."
"That's a necessary sacrifice…"
"Rejected!"
Ryo's plan was flatly rejected by Abel.
The eternal struggle between swordsmen and magicians, a clash as old as the world itself.
The fated conflict between front-line and rear-guard.
Maybe it was inevitable.
"Then what do you want to do?"
"Just go around to the back entrance normally."
"Mrrgh… I suppose that can't be helped."
Though not as large as the 'Ryusen Estate', the 'Moonlight Banquet Pavilion' was still a fairly spacious inn.
It was the kind of place where wealthy merchants and regional lords stayed with their entourages and bodyguards, so it naturally had to be big.
That also meant there were many areas out of sight.
"With this kind of security, an assassin swordsman could sneak in easily."
"An assassin swordsman?"
"A scary crimson swordsman who wields a magic sword and makes a living off assassinations."
As Ryo explained, he glanced sideways at Abel.
"Right… You weren't implying me just now, were you?"
"O-of course not! I'd never say something like that."
Even as they whispered to each other, they occasionally ducked into hiding.
Security was lax… though whether the people in the yard were inn guards or bodyguards of guests was unclear—but people were patrolling the garden.
Still, for the two of them, it wasn't enough to be a real threat if they got serious…
The structure of the 'Moonlight Banquet Pavilion' was typical of those found in Darwei—single-story buildings connected by corridors.
Naturally, they didn't know exactly where Roche Ten was staying.
However…
"
Ryo used his water-attribute magic.
If he recognized someone's presence, he could track it.
"It's the room further down, over there."
Ryo led the way, with Abel following behind…
Knock knock.
A knock echoed.
"Yes?"
From within came a wary, but familiar voice.
Ryo opened the door and peeked in.
"Huh? Ryo-san? And Abel-san too?"
Abel poked his head out from behind Ryo.
Inside was Lord Roche Ten, Count of Bashu, sipping tea.
-x-X-x-
"Why are you two here?"
After inviting Ryo and Abel, who had suddenly arrived, to sit, Roche Ten asked them this question.
Of course, it was a natural question.
The two had parted ways in the city of Nomon, and now here they were in the imperial capital, even showing up at the inn where Roche Ten was staying.
And yet, no one had come to inform him of their arrival…
"Um, we came to check in on you."
Ryo answered.
It wasn't a lie.
Of course, that wasn't the only reason.
"I see… so it's already reached your ears as well? But it only happened a few hours ago. That seems rather quick, doesn't it?"
Roche Ten was a calm, composed man— but certainly not slow-witted.
"That's true. Actually, we've been hired as guards by Von Debout-dono, Count of Matan."
Abel said honestly, causing Roche Ten to widen his eyes in surprise.
He seemed quite shocked.
But only for a moment.
He quickly nodded.
"I see. That explains it. Count Matan's vassals must have been gathering information too. So your visit here is part of that?"
"Yes. Given what just happened, and the fact that we're hired by the man who attacked you… we understand it's awkward."
"No, I don't mind. In fact, I'd like you to tell his vassals something."
"Tell them? What exactly?"
"To refrain from any rash actions."
Roche Ten's expression was deadly serious.
"I understand. I promise. For that reason…"
"Yes, I'll tell you everything I can."
Roche Ten nodded.
"Though… there really isn't that much."
Here's a summary of what Roche Ten said:
Roche Ten had been appointed advisor for the preparation of the new residence following the wedding of the Sixth Prince Ryun.
Because of this, he often entered the imperial palace, though it had been some time since he walked the south corridor where the incident took place.
While walking there, he heard a scream from behind.
When he turned around, he saw a palace guard on the floor and Count Matan charging toward him with a sword raised.
There were others around, but no one moved.
Roche Ten dodged as Count Matan swung his sword down.
Count Matan staggered as a result and was then restrained by nearby officials and lords who piled on top of him.
Roche Ten was quickly escorted to another room, so he didn't see what happened after that.
"I'm not skilled in martial arts, but Count Matan is even less suited for such things."
Roche Ten added with a small shake of his head, finishing his account.
"Are you close with Count Matan…Von Debout-dono?"
"No… I know of him, of course, but we've never worked together before. We barely know each other."
"I see."
"Count Matan is not a martial man, but he is known to be principled. He doesn't belong to any faction, and he always acts with integrity— even toward the princes and royal family. So to think such a man would draw his sword in the imperial palace… If I hadn't been the target myself, I wouldn't have believed the story."
With that, Roche Ten drank the last of his tea.
"Did you notice anything unusual? About him, or about the situation…?"
"Hmm… to be honest, everything felt unusual… But two things stood out. First, when he attacked, his eyes were closed."
"…His eyes were closed when he struck?"
"Yes. Strange, right? Even the best swordsman can't hit a target with their eyes closed. And second—this was just for a moment—but I caught a sweet scent coming from his body."
"A sweet scent…?"
"Yes, something I've never really smelled before… maybe coming from inside his clothes. I don't know if that means anything, but it really stuck with me."
"No—that's helpful."
Abel nodded at Roche Ten's words.
Ryo, who had remained silent, spoke up.
"Do you know what Count Matan Von Debout-san was working on recently?"
"Yes. Count Matan was in charge of hospitality for the princess. In other words, he was responsible for everything from caring for Princess Shio Fen, who was to marry His Highness the Sixth Prince Ryun as his legal wife, to preparing tools, the wedding ceremony, and setting up temporary accommodations. Of course, the actual work is done by officials; we lords only hold the title of responsibility. He did attend meetings and communicate frequently with the other side, but… I had heard that everything was proceeding smoothly."
Roche Ten gave a slight shake of his head.
He truly couldn't understand why the incident had occurred.
"Anyway, we'll go and deliver your message to Count Matan's vassals."
"Yes, please. Also, no punishment or execution will happen until the wedding is over. There's still time… please remind his people not to do anything rash…"
"Got it. We'll let them know."
With that, Ryo and Abel exited the inn, 'Moonlight Banquet Pavilion', once again using the back door.
"Both the attacker and the victim are involved in the wedding."
"Ah, so you noticed it too, Ryo."
Prince Ryun, the Sixth Prince, was marrying Princess Shio Fen.
The victim, Lord Roche Ten, was overseeing the preparation of Prince Ryun's new residence.
The attacker, Count Matan Von Debout, was responsible for hosting Princess Shio Fen.
"No way that's just a coincidence."
"Exactly…"
Abel nodded, thinking for a moment before continuing.
"First things first, we report."
In the Darwei Imperial Family, the former Crown Prince (First Prince) had already died.
Roche Ten had belonged to his faction. But was currently unaffiliated.
The Second, Third, and Fourth Princes had become Imperial Princes.
A rank above ordinary princes and contenders for the throne.
The Sixth Prince, Ryun, was not an Imperial Prince and wasn't in line to compete for the throne.
Ryo and Abel had met him before in Fenmu, the imperial mausoleum.
Princess Shio Fen was marrying him.
So, to sum up—it all seems deeply connected.
The two of them reported everything to Wei Fon and the others.
Of course, they also passed on Roche Ten's warning to avoid rash actions.
"Wei Fon-san said they could keep things under control in the capital, but…"
"Yeah. Once word reaches the territories, who knows what'll happen. The family will probably be dissolved…"
"And no one would quietly accept that…"
Abel and Ryo both let out a long sigh.
Naturally, as hired adventurers—not vassals—they wouldn't suffer serious losses.
At worst, they wouldn't get paid.
But for Count Matan's vassals, like Wei Fon, it was possible their families would be left destitute.
No wonder the two sighed.
"Anyway… they said they wanted us to gather more intel, right?"
"Yep. No point in just sitting around the waiting area. So, where should we start?"
Just as Abel and Ryo were deciding what to do next, they heard voices from the city.
"The Princess is arriving!"
"It's Prince Ryun's bride's ship!"
"Think we can get a glimpse if we head to the harbor?"
"Let's go check it out!"
"Abel, looks like Princess Shio Fen and her party have arrived."
"Yeah, it took us a while too, but they're finally here."
"Well, they were stopping in cities for formal appearances. Must've been exhausting."
Even though Ryo and Abel had only traveled with her entourage for a few days, they sympathized with the burden she must have endured.
-x-X-x-
The port was overflowing with people from the Imperial Capital.
Everyone was waving their hands or waving cloths, celebrating the arrival of the princess.
Facing the crowd, Princess Shio Fen smiled gently and waved back.
Behind her to the left stood her lady-in-waiting, Mifa, and to the right stood the captain of the princess's guard, Bizis.
From the corner of her eye, Princess Shio Fen noticed Bizis tilting her head slightly.
"What's wrong, Bizis?"
"Ah. It's just… I thought I saw a white robe in the crowd…"
"The people of Darwei mostly wear Eastern-style clothing, right? The kind that opens at the front and is fastened with a sash?"
The princess asked, Bizis responded, and Mifa confirmed.
Anyone not wearing Eastern-style clothing would certainly stand out…
"The white robe person you're thinking about is Ryo-sama, right?"
"Y-yes…"
Bizis responded, bowing her head at Princess Shio Fen's confirmation.
"If it were a matter of love, that would be lovely, but in your case, you just want to receive sword instruction from him, don't you?"
Princess Shio Fen sighed lightly and said with a wry smile.
For some reason, Ryo always seemed to be sought out as a sparing opponent.
"But I heard that ordinary people aren't allowed into the Imperial Capital around the time of the princess's arrival."
"That seems to be the case. Abel-sensei too, and Ryo-sama probably won't be entering the capital for a while."
At Mifa's words, Princess Shio Fen nodded.
"Princess, please proceed."
A gangway was set up on the ship.
Already, soldiers from Darwei's Ministry of Rites were lined up at the disembarkation point, ready and waiting.
Naturally, the princess's disembarkation was part of the ceremony.
"Then, let's go."
As Princess Shio Fen said this, both Mifa and Bizis nodded.
At last, Princess Shio Fen's party had arrived at the Imperial Capital, Hanlin.
"You have to hand it to the princess—she was so dignified! Mifa seemed to be doing her duty splendidly, too."
"Yeah. I'm sure it'll be tough from here on out, but they'll be fine."
Ryo nodded repeatedly, and Abel smiled as they watched the princess's group disembark.
The white robe Bizis had seen really was Ryo.
After Princess Shio Fen's party disembarked and moved toward the palace.
The crowd gradually began to thin.
Things were still hectic due to unloading from the ship, but… the person the two were looking for had already disembarked and was watching over the work of their subordinates.
Moreover, the person standing next to them was a familiar face.
Neither of them looked particularly busy—this was the perfect chance!
"Captain Myun, Captain Lau, it's been a while."
Ryo greeted the captain of the first ship in the princess's fleet, Myun, and the captain of the tenth ship, Lau.
"Hm? Oh, it's Ryo-dono!"
"Ryo-san! And Abel-san too. So you both arrived at the capital ahead of us?"
Both Captain Myun and Captain Lau remembered them.
"I'm sorry about what happened back then. The Ministry of Rites wouldn't budge."
"No, well, it couldn't be helped."
Captain Myun had tried to appeal to Deputy Minister Snus of the Ministry of Rites to keep Ryo and Abel with the fleet, but it hadn't worked.
Ryo understood how inflexible bureaucratic systems could be, so he wasn't particularly bothered.
"Really. After that, bringing in water was tough, and the crew gave Deputy Minister Snus some pretty cold looks. I did feel a bit sorry for him."
Captain Lau said with a laugh.
"Actually, something serious has come up…"
With that, Ryo began to explain the incident he and Abel had gotten caught up in.
"That is troubling. Count Matan, Von Debout-dono, was in charge of hosting the princess, wasn't he? I've known that since it was decided over a year ago… If Count Matan is in prison, someone else will have to take over his role. That's sure to affect the princess's entourage."
"This wedding is just full of complications."
Captain Lau expressed concern over the change in host, and Captain Myun sighed at the overall situation.
No doubt many things had happened after Ryo and Abel left the fleet.
"Prince Ryun, the Sixth Prince, seems gentle but is actually a man of strong conviction. That's why I believe the Princess would be a good match for him as his main consort…"
"You know Prince Ryun well, Captain Myun?"
Ryo asked as Captain Myun muttered.
"Yes. In the past… actually, we fought on the battlefield together. I believe the prince was in his early teens at the time, but I remember him leading his unit to aid our forces. Thanks to him, the front line didn't collapse. Later, the Second Prince, who commanded the army, praised him for it."
"Oh ho."
"But… I've never heard of Prince Ryun being brave or brilliant…"
Captain Lau tilted his head as he listened to the conversation.
"Yeah. That came afterward. He began acting deliberately inconspicuous. I kept watching him because I'd seen his bravery firsthand… he even started acting dull on purpose."
"That's because… of the Crown Prince…?"
"Exactly. It was right around when the Crown Prince passed away and the imperial succession issue became more visible. He probably didn't want to get caught up in it. Prince Ryun's mother entered the palace as a maid to the Crown Prince's mother. Her status isn't high. If he got involved in the succession, she might suffer too."
Captain Myun held Prince Ryun in high regard.
However, due to his mother's low status… there were likely various complications.
"Oops, we got sidetracked. You two came about Count Matan, right? We in the imperial fleet are technically under the direct command of His Majesty. We were lent to the Ministry of Rites for this occasion and usually operate alongside the navy, but ultimately, we report to the Emperor. I'll be meeting with His Majesty this evening for a report—I'll see what I can find out."
"Really?!"
Ryo was surprised by Captain Myun's offer.
This was completely unexpected.
"Well, if he really did attack someone in the palace, there's no hope for a pardon, but I might be able to find out how the story has been reported to His Majesty. Come by again tomorrow. I'll be at the public fleet building over there."
Captain Myun pointed to a massive stone building by the harbor.
That must have been the public fleet's headquarters.
"Thank you so much!"
Ryo and Abel expressed their gratitude and left the area.
"Man, it really pays to know a captain of the imperial fleet!"
"Most people don't, though."
Walking away from the captains, Ryo and Abel chatted.
Right now, they needed as much information as they could get.
Captain Myun had promised to let them know what was being reported to the emperor.
That was a major breakthrough.
"But, it's not like this one move will solve everything."
"Well, obviously."
"But but! If, for example, we saved His Majesty the Emperor from being attacked, he might grant us a favor and we could save Von Debout-san!"
"Yeah, and as usual, that's never going to happen. I mean, the Emperor being attacked? That's absurd. And even if it happened, the imperial guards would take care of it before we even got there."
Abel, as always, shot down Ryo's light-novel-style hopes for a heroic twist.
"But apparently, there was a king who got ambushed by imperial troops. Right in his own country."
Ryo was referring to the incident in the north where Abel himself had been ambushed.
"Yeah, that did happen…"
Abel frowned.
"Honestly, what kind of king gets outdone by a few imperial soldiers? Pretty lame, if you ask me!"
"Hey, come on now…"
"You should be able to take out a few imperial soldiers with just your pinky! If you can't do that, world domination is a pipe dream!"
"Uh, I don't want world domination…"
"A king's vision is important. If you're always caught up in what's right in front of you, you can't truly lead your people. Practical policies grounded in reality, yes. But also bold, idealistic goals. A true king balances both."
"Uh, okay…"
"I have high expectations for you, Abel. That's why I speak harshly. I don't want to be disappointed."
"Why do I feel so… conflicted right now…"
Ryo didn't want to say all that.
But Abel was a king.
No one else would speak so frankly to him… and that's why Ryo, as the premier duke, had to.
He didn't want to.
But for the good of the country, he had to…
"Kukuku, it cannot be helped."
"Why are you laughing while you say that?"
"Ah! My mistake. Please pretend that never happened."
"…"
There are some things in this world that just… slip out, even when you try to hide them.
The two of them were heading back to the waiting area to make their report when…
"About twelve people are watching the place."
"There weren't any when we left earlier, right?"
"Right. They definitely weren't there."
Ryo used his
There hadn't been any watchers when they came back from the Moonlight Banquet Pavilion, so the surveillance must have started while they were at the port.
"Hmmm, I can only detect up to eight of them."
Abel said with some frustration.
"Yeah. The other four are probably professionals. Even their breathing is totally different—calm and composed."
"So, that means multiple groups are keeping an eye on us."
"Most likely. So, what do we do? Go in? Stay out…?"
"If it's an official intelligence agency or something, they've probably already figured out we were hired by Lord Von Debout. We've been guarding him for three days, after all."
"Ah, good point. No use worrying about it now, I guess."
The two agreed and walked into the waiting area.
Inside was only Wei Fon.
The others had all gone out to gather information.
Wei Fon had probably wanted to go too, but… as the captain, he couldn't leave so easily.
"Ah, you're back. Did you find anything?"
"Yes, a few things."
Ryo proceeded to explain what had happened at the port.
Including that the station was now under surveillance.
Wei Fon nodded.
He had suspected as much.
"All the entourages of the other lords have left. And no one new is coming in."
Indeed, the waiting station was eerily quiet—just the three of them remained.
Whether it was on someone's orders or a collective decision based on each lord's intel.
It was clear this place was being avoided.
"The more successful our intel gathering is, the more likely we'll be targeted."
Abel voiced his concern.
If they had just been regular escorts or attendants, they might have been ignored. But once it was clear they were skilled and gathering useful intel, someone with something to hide might decide to act.
"True. Not just here—even the ones out gathering intel alone are vulnerable. If they're attacked, it'll be tough."
Wei Fon began to consider the risk to their dispersed members.
Things were getting dicey.
"For now, we'll all regroup at the Ryusen Residence tonight. It'll be easier to defend than this place."
Wei Fon's tone was firm.
Part of that decision was based on the fact that other powerful merchants and local lords were also staying at the Ryusen Residence. Their forces might help with defense if needed.
Ryo and Abel understood that and didn't blame him.
Of course, in terms of gathering intel, the waiting area— right next to the palace—was ideal.
But once they pulled out, they'd likely lose the right to return.
With Lord Von Debout imprisoned in high security, Wei Fon and his group, as his retainers, would no longer have authorization to use it.
They were only still there because no order had officially forced them out… yet.
"We'll withdraw by 5 p.m., before dark."
"Got it. We'll head back out for intel gathering. We'll return before then, but if we don't make it back in time, just head to Ryusen Residence without us."
Abel replied to Wei Fon's plan.
"Will you be okay?"
"If it's just the two of us, we'll manage somehow."
Abel said confidently, and Ryo nodded.
Yes—these two were actually pretty strong.
