Chapter 3 - intruder

----- two months later

In the last two months, I've learned a lot of things about the environment I live in. The region we're in is a small town called Dampiercot. The man who runs the town is Aric Blackwood, a retired royal knight.

From the conversations I've overheard, this man lost his right leg protecting the king during an assassination, and after the war, the king rewarded him with this town-like piece of land.

While I was spending my third month in this world, I finally completed the first mission the system had given me, and I was showing off about it to my mom.

"Kael, do you see? Our son has already learned to walk at this age. He's definitely going to be a great warrior in the future."

While my mother cried from happiness, I walked toward her lap with slow and determined steps and let myself drop onto my mother.

"You're really right. Until now, I'd never heard of anyone who could walk at 3 months old. The Lords must have favored our son."

Since I already knew how to walk, all I had to do was drink my mother's milk and wait until my legs could hold me up. But if you want to think the gods blessed me, I can't stop you.

[Congratulations, main task (learn to walk) completed

Mission completion rating : S

Mission reward : profile screen and repeating missions unlocked

Extra reward : charm + 1]

Ohhh, it's a very strange feeling when some information suddenly appears in my head. So this is what the profile screen is for. Even though my vocal cord development is complete and I can speak, I don't want to scare my mom. So I'll check the profile when night comes.

[Congratulations, you have a new main task (learn to read and write)

Mission content : learn to read and write in the language of this country as soon as possible. To complete the task, write at least one word in the Dastia language

Mission time : 1 year

Mission progress : none

Mission reward : unlocking the ability to control the system with the mind, and the system AI

Mission penalty : strength -1

Note : A person who cannot read or write is called a child. No matter what age they are. Are you a child?]

The system AI and controlling the system with the mind are really good things. Now I don't need to hesitate to control the system in front of other people, and on top of that I have an AI I can ask questions about the system. Maybe this AI is the same as the ones from my previous life, and it will tell me everything I'm curious about.

If I can get my hands on the math and physics books of my previous life, or at worst the romances, I can publish a few books and be lazy for the rest of my life.

[Congratulations, you have a new repeating task (get stronger)

Mission content : do as much physical training as you can.

Mission time : 1 month

Mission progress : none

Mission reward : physical growth

Mission penalty : electricity

Note : If you're lazy all day, you will die. I'm serious!]

Haaa, what kind of mission is this? I'm not even sure it can really be called a mission. Anyway, I was already doing physical exercise, and a reward that comes out of thin air is a good thing.

Even though I don't understand what a mission penalty is, I'm sure I don't want to find out.

Now, let's take a look at this thing called a profile.

--- profile ---

Cooking - lvl 3

Using a dagger - lvl 1

I definitely think I'm better at cooking than at cleaning. I wonder if the level dropped because the ingredients for the dishes I know don't exist in this world. Math and physics didn't surprise me anyway.

It was inevitable that I'd turn out to be a charming person. With a mother like that, who could possibly be ugly? But there's one question stuck in my mind. If I fail the main task, will my strength drop below 0? Maybe I'd end up crippled.

Knock knock

Who could have come at this hour of the night?

When my father heard the knocking at the door, he quietly approached it, took the sword hanging beside the door, and slowly opened the wooden door. When I saw that my father stayed unresponsive for a while, a small fear settled in my heart. At the same time, my mother, who was holding me, got up from the wooden floor where she was sitting and took a step back.

"Albertoo! It's been a long time. Why did you come without letting us know? And are you okay? What happened to your arm?"

When my mom heard who had come, she let out a relieved breath and sat me down on the couch.

"Is it Alberto, honey?"

"Yes, but he's a little hurt. Could you bring my first aid supplies?"

As my mother went to the back room of our old four-room house, which was usually used as a storage room, a handsome blond man came in through the door.

Blood was dripping onto the floor from the arrow lodged in the man's left shoulder. My father moved quickly, sat the man down on another couch, and started wrapping the cotton cloth my mother had brought around the man's shoulder.

After reinforcing the cotton cloth he'd wrapped around the man's shoulder with a layer of plastic wrap, my father finished his first aid, which in my eyes was at a pitiable level.

Although I was known as a gangster in my previous life, I was actually just a simple street kid, and since I don't like taking orders from other people, I had never joined a clan.

For that reason, when I got injured, instead of going to a hospital where they'd question the cause, I would do first aid on myself.

One of the biggest mistakes my father made was letting the fluffy cotton cloth touch the wound. Another mistake was wrapping the wound without disinfecting it. If it was left like this, the wound would become infected, and as a result the arm might even become unusable.

Since there was nothing I could do as a sweet baby, I kept watching everything in silence.

A week after the incident, everything happened just as I had expected.

The young man, who I learned was my uncle, insisted that he was fine and refused to see the village pharmacist. As a result, he got out of bed last night in a cold sweat and interrupted the cozy sleeping time I share with my mother.

So my mother wrapped me in several layers of blankets and set out to take my uncle to the village pharmacist's hut.

"Grit your teeth a little longer, Alberto. We'll be with Granny Pharmacist in no time."

"You don't need to worry. I just need a simple painkiller."

What a stupid man. The level of education in this world seems to be very low. In the future, I have to find a way to use the knowledge I gained in my previous life.

By luck, the old woman hadn't gone to sleep yet, and she welcomed us. The pharmacist woman ignored my uncle's nonsense, tore off my father's amateur first aid, and exposed the wound, which had almost turned black.

Then the next thing the old woman did scared me so much that I almost swallowed my little tongue.
