For Portugal, nothing remained to chase.
The Spanish players were still gathered near the corner flag, swallowed by a sea of white and gold, arms around one another, in the moment.
Behind them, the Portuguese players stood scattered across the pitch, blank-eyed and realising it, while others simply stared at the scoreboard.
The cameras found them one by one.
João Neves stood with his hands resting on his thighs, his head lowered as he fought to keep himself together.
Bernardo Silva had both hands over his face while Rúben Dias stood motionless, his eyes fixed somewhere beyond the celebrations.
And then the camera found Cristiano Ronaldo.
He stood several yards away from the others, and his face was almost completely blank as the broadcast camera found him.
"Look at those faces," Clive Tyldesley said, lowering his voice.
The picture changed again, showing another Portuguese player wiping his eyes while Ally McCoist spoke quietly beside him.
"They've given everything."
