Chapter 3 - The Labyrinth's Challenge

Unicus and Marcus run through a cave, holding each other's hands tightly, their faces determined as they navigate the rocky terrain. Lush ferns cascade down rocky walls, while moss blankets the damp surfaces. Colorful wildflowers add splashes of pink and yellow, contrasting with the lush greenery. Despite the dim light, life flourishes in this hidden oasis, creating a vibrant tapestry of nature amidst the darkness. Focused on staying together and reaching safety.

But fate seems like it has been playing a game of its own, the spider from before seems to be following them now. It isn't hurrying; in fact, it has been walking slowly. But its size meant even its walking speed is comparable to our running speed.

"Hey Marcus I have a suggestion," Unicus said with a serious face ready to put my plan into action.

"Let's hear it, at this point we might need some plan to get away from here?" Marcus said with eyes full of fears and he was even trembling as well.

"I want you to leave me here, and get to safety," Unicus's suggestions though had not the intended effect.

"What!! Do you think I'll abandon you? Never!! I'll never be able to look your family in the eyes of something like that happened," this time Marcus is really close to crying out with tears in her eyes.

Until 4 years ago Marcus had always been alone with no friends to play with; her whole life has been one giant mess. She has a loving father but with no mother of her own; she can clearly notice the struggles her father went through to make her happy despite everything. But suddenly one day when she was playing in the sand by herself, a boy suddenly came and talked to her like they have been friends all along.

"Hi, I always noticed that you have been playing by yourself. What is your name? My name is Unicus Rockafella."

His smile captures her attention more than anything through, his smile is as radiant as the sun itself; her nervousness reached its peak and she don't know how to respond to his question. It's not every day that she gets to talk to people other than her own father; in a word Marcus couldn't believe her eyes.

"No, it's not like that, if you leave me behind, at least you could be saved from the spider," but Unicus' voice cut through her thoughts.

Their conversation was interrupted midway by the unexpected guest spider; its screams are so loud enough to make it uncomfortable. Now instead of running away Marcus moves towards the spider slowly.

"Marcus what are you doing? Your attacks are ineffective against it," Unicus asks with a heart filled with concern for his friend.

"I don't care, I have to do this," with eyes full of determination, "I'll protect you!! I'll protect my friend!!"

The moment he said that he was surrounded by reddish-orange flames, he started her incantation which increased the intensity of the flame. When the incantation was completed, he released the flame towards the towering spider in front of her. As the towering spider confronts a roaring flame, its hairy legs engulfed in searing heat. Panic pulses through its eight-legged frame as it flees towards the nearby waterfall, its desperate need to extinguish the flames driving every movement. Submerging itself in the cool rush of water, relief floods its senses as the fire is finally quenched.

Emerging from the pool, the spider's once sleek exoskeleton now bears singed patches, a testament to the danger narrowly avoided. Now though the spider looks angry or maybe it's fear from the fire Marcus released, whatever it is we can't let it go now, could we?. I did it, I released the most powerful flame I had ever conjured. Now my whole body is feeling its after effects, this only reminds me what my father warned me about before.

"Marcus you have the ability to use powerful fire magic, but you shouldn't use it unless you have to because magic always comes at a cost," Marcus nodded at the time but even he didn't know that the after effects of such a display would be so devastating to herself.

Marcus couldn't help but smile as the exhaustion finally caught up to her. Marcus seemed a bit off. He has been standing there like a stone statue for a while staring the injured spider down in a duel or something. So I walked towards her and only then had I noticed that he was standing there unconsciously, I took him piggyback style and started walking towards a place which could be considered safe.

As far as the spider is concerned, since it fears the fire it didn't make any moves and quietly watched us go and fade away in the distance. So finally we came out of that cave floor where the waterfall was, it sure was quite the adventure. I'll make a note to never come back here again.

The cave's pathways twist and turn in a bewildering maze, with jagged stalactites casting ominous shadows along the uneven walls. Narrow passages abruptly give way to wide chambers before narrowing again, forcing him to navigate around imposing rock formations. Faint echoes distort sound, adding to the disorientation, while occasional shafts of light tease potential escape routes before being swallowed by darkness. Amidst the damp scent of earth and minerals, which meant that he must rely on his own instincts to navigate the confusing labyrinth of the cave's interior.

As Unicus stepped forward into the cave. He was met with a scene of carnage. He has seen so many at this point, it kind of seems normal to him now because throughout the cave he found several scenes of carnage. The cavern floor was littered with the charred remains of monstrous creatures. Their bodies bearing evidence of the fierce battle that had taken place moments before. Some lay with razor-sharp cuts across their flesh. While others appeared to have been burnt from the inside out. Their forms twisted in agony. The air carried the lingering scent of ozone and burnt fur, adding to the ominous atmosphere of the cave. Stone in Unicus's hand cast a dim glow over the scene, illuminating the gruesome aftermath of the conflict. Patches of scorched earth marked the ground where lightning spells had struck, leaving behind a faint smell of burnt vegetation. Despite the stillness that now settled over the cavern, Unicus could sense an underlying tension in the air, as if the shadows themselves held secrets waiting to be uncovered. With caution, he pressed forward. His senses alert for any sign of further danger lurking within the depths of the cave.

It's strange all the monster's bodies seem to be sliced in the exact same way, someone or something must have used a sharp object to slice them, as evident by the razor-sharp cuts in the dead bodies. I have even seen some monster bodies fried from inside out like they had been electrocuted or something, whatever was responsible for this must be nearby, because he can hear faint sounds of a battle and the movement of a sword slicing through the air. So Unicus decided it's about time to wake Marcus up, and ask her to keep her magic ready, just in case something happens.

He gently poked her face and even called out to her. She was sleeping hard, so he decided to go the rough way. He took some water he saved from the waterfall and poured it cold onto her face. It worked like a charm.

"Mmm…." Marcus slowly opened her eyes and Unicus was the first person visible to her.

"What happened, Unicus? What is this place?" Marcus's eyes still held traces of tiredness, her fatigue evident in her face from the previous powerful spell she cast.

"We can talk about that later. There, you see that!" Unicus pointed towards the commotion.

"Whatever made this happen, it must still be nearby, and we should be really careful. I hear some faint traces of battle going on nearby, which is why I have woken you up, okay?" Unicus explained everything to Marcus.

"Fine, I'll do my best and keep you safe, Unicus. I propose that we all go inside, so it's my responsibility that all of us make it out alive," Marcus said in an almost dramatic way, but Unicus understood her point.

"Fine, fine, but look at all the destruction it caused. Think we can handle something like that?" said Unicus. As the non-combatant there, he couldn't help but feel like he was the burden holding Marcus back. He did know a thing or two about martial arts from basics to advanced techniques which he learned in his previous life, but he was afraid to even go near those disgusting creatures known as monsters. Not to mention, his 10-year-old appearance would limit his movements to a certain extent as well.

"Well, since I used my powerful spell, my power won't be as strong for a while. I'll still try my best, okay? There is nothing to worry about here," Marcus's words, although supposed to reassure him, had the opposite effect on him.

"Right, Marcus, I have total confidence in you," Unicus said in an unenthusiastic manner, almost as if bored.

Following that, they both walked until they reached nearby the place where whatever was hunting monsters. Unicus could clearly pick up sounds of a battle now, the sound of a sword slicing through the air, something very familiar to him due to his martial arts training from his previous life. But when Unicus checked out who or what was there, the scene kind of shocked him.

As Mellona stood amidst the aftermath of the fierce battle, her breaths came in steady, measured rhythms, her amber eyes scanning the cavern with a mixture of satisfaction and determination. The charred remains of the rat-like monsters lay strewn about the cave floor, their twisted forms bearing witness to the ferocity of Mellona's onslaught. With a sense of grim resolve, she approached the lone remaining monster, its lifeless body bearing the unmistakable marks of her deadly prowess.

Despite the carnage that surrounded her, Mellona's sadistic smile made even Unicus cower in fear, her hands steady as she wiped the dirt and grime from her clothes. Though wearied by the intensity of the battle, there was a glint of triumph in her eyes, a testament to her skill and determination in the face of danger.

"Umm, Mellona, are you still sane?" Unicus called out to her even before he made up his mind. But Mellona heard him; she turned back and surveyed the surroundings. When she noticed Unicus, she came running and knelt on the ground.

"I'm really sorry, I should have been more careful. If only I did, then all of us wouldn't have been separated from each other," she expressed her heartfelt feelings, but Unicus couldn't help but remember her sadistic smile from before; it kind of bugs him now.

While they were talking, Marcus had laid eyes on Mellona as well. She came crying and pushed Unicus to the side and gave Mellona a big hug.

"I was so scared without you, what were you doing Mellona?" Unicus understood the situation and moved away to a different location to give them some privacy. "Don't cry Marcus, I know you were scared, but at the very least, you aren't alone, right? Unicus was with you, right?" Mellona gently asked her question to Marcus. Marcus, unable to respond verbally, nodded to say yes.

"Well, I was alone, in the dark and tiny place, it was scary. But do you know what kept me going? It was the thought that I might stumble upon you both if I kept fighting long enough," Mellona's comforting voice decreased as Unicus moved farther and farther away from them; now he can't even hear anything, but he doesn't really want to listen to that. He already knows what they will discuss anyway; I'll let Marcus figure it out by herself.

After a few minutes with all of them reunited, they decided that they only have two choices. They either have to go outside, or they have to go deeper inside the cave. It already seems like all of them are deeper in the cave, so it wouldn't be much of a task if they have to go deeper and complete the exploration of the cave, with Mellona by their side. Unicus feels a bit comfortable entertaining the idea of completion of their exploration of the cave.

They conducted a vote among them, which resulted in all three choosing to explore further rather than going outside. The cave's pathways twist and turn in a bewildering maze, with jagged stalactites casting ominous shadows along the uneven walls. Narrow passages abruptly give way to wide chambers before narrowing again, forcing them to navigate around imposing rock formations. Faint echoes distort sound, adding to the disorientation, while occasional shafts of light tease potential escape routes before being swallowed by darkness. Amidst the damp scent of earth and minerals, they must rely on their own instincts to navigate the confusing labyrinth of the cave's interior.

But since they are all together, they all combined their instincts and somehow felt like they were all going in the correct direction. At some point, their worries all disappeared as they all reached a room inside the cave somehow.

As I step into the cavernous chamber hidden deep within the cave, I am immediately struck by its grandeur. Above me, the ceiling stretches high, adorned with intricate stalactite formations that shimmer with the faint glow of bioluminescent crystals. The air is cool and still, tinged with the scent of damp earth. In the center of the room stands a magnificent throne, crafted from a single, towering stalagmite. Its surface gleams with a polished sheen, reflecting the soft light that filters in from the cave's entrance. Surrounding the throne, tapestries woven from shimmering spider silk depict scenes of ancient legends and mythical creatures, adding to the room's sense of mystery. Along the walls, alcoves carved into the stone display a dazzling array of treasures: jeweled artifacts, gilded goblets, and ancient manuscripts adorned with precious gemstones. The flickering torchlight casts dancing shadows across the chamber, heightening the atmosphere of intrigue. At one end of the room, a tranquil pool fed by a cascading waterfall glistens in the dim light, its waters reflecting the beauty of the surrounding cavern.

Wow, this is some next-level stuff. Oh my god, who would have thought that we would find something like this out here? But their happiness was shattered as a powerful monster entered the room from the other side. The colossal spider from above is oozing its saliva or venom from its massive mouthparts. This viscous fluid drips ominously from its serrated fangs, leaving a trail of glistening droplets. The colossal spider stands at an astonishing height of over 15 meters, its immense form dominating the horizon of the cave. With a leg span stretching to more than 75 meters across, its presence dwarfs even the tallest vegetation in the enormous floor of the cave, casting a long shadow over the surroundings. Covered in coarse, dark-colored hairs, the spider's body bristles with menace as its eight thick, segmented legs extend outward, each adorned with sharp, hooked claws ready to ensnare prey. Its cephalothorax features multiple pairs of large, multifaceted eyes that gleam with an otherworldly intelligence, while long, twitching antennae sense the slightest vibrations in the air and on the ground. Despite its monstrous size, the spider moves with surprising grace and agility, its massive legs propelling it forward with alarming speed.

"Marcus, do you feel like it's the same spider we encountered before too? Because I definitely think it's the same!" Unicus shouted as he escaped from the spider's range. The places where he previously stood are getting broken by the spider's raw strength. It almost made him wonder, 'Was it holding back on us last time?' Hours of rest finally brought him back to a position where he can at least run away if he thought he was in danger. His body still feels heavy and sluggish, but he has to at least survive.

Marcus, using the opportunity given to her by Unicus, used a fire spell quickly. But this was very inferior compared to the one she cast before due to her fatigue and other factors, which resulted in the flames doing nothing more than a mere scratch on the spider's exoskeleton.

"Don't worry, Marcus, I'll handle the rest!" Mellona charged towards the spider with a sadistic smile, as always, but the outcome was unexpected. The spider's exoskeleton and her sword made contact, sending Mellona hurtling backwards.

"What is the meaning of this? This is the first time I experienced this," Mellona's confusion was evident in her face, but Unicus didn't have a clue either.

They ran here and there to escape from the spider's wrath, but the whole room is broken, and the cave might collapse if left unchecked at this point. The sounds of crackling floors and murderous intent float heavily in the air as all three regroup to discuss their strategy on how to deal with this huge monster.
