Chapter 759 - 758-Husband & Wife

'Yoichi.'

The recognition was instant, visceral. Even with the altered appearance, even with the hair darkened from its distinctive Uzumaki red to a nondescript brown, Renjiro knew.

'Calm down,' Renjiro told himself, forcing his breathing to steady, his heart to slow. 'You removed yourself from Uzumaki affairs. His presence is not your problem anymore.'

But the thought rang hollow, even in his own mind.

'Why do I even care?'

He couldn't answer that. Not honestly. Not without admitting that some part of him still felt connected to these people, despite everything.

He forced himself to think logically, to process the situation as a tactical problem rather than an emotional one.

Yoichi had known Kushina before the fall of Uzushiogakure. If that was true—and Renjiro had no reason to doubt it—then it made perfect sense that Yoichi would want to attend her wedding. A chance to see an old friend, to witness a moment of happiness in a life that had been defined by loss.

'That's all this is,' he told himself. 'A personal visit. Nothing more.'

But the analytical part of his mind, the part that had kept him alive through years of war and political manoeuvring, wasn't satisfied.

This wedding was not a normal event.

The groom was Minato —Hiruzen's likely successor. The bride was Kushina—the Nine-Tails Jinchūriki, the most politically sensitive figure in Konoha outside the Hokage himself.

Because of that, the attendees represented the highest concentration of power and perception in the village.

Renjiro's gaze swept the hall again, cataloguing faces, positions, and sightlines.

'Yoichi's disguise is extremely risky,' he concluded. 'Even with the hair changed, if someone with sharp senses or a good memory gets a clear look at him—'

He scanned for others. For any of the Uzumaki survivors who might have accompanied Yoichi.

He found nothing.

'Yoichi would never appear alone,' Renjiro thought. 'So where are they?'

The question nagged at him. He considered expanding his chakra field. With it, he could identify unfamiliar signatures, detect hidden Uzumaki, and map the entire room in seconds.

But the risks were too high.

Using chakra sensing here would; Alert every sensory-capable shinobi in attendance. Draw the immediate attention of village leadership and might even be interpreted as hostile surveillance—an unforgivable breach of etiquette at a wedding.

Hiruzen would notice. Danzō would notice. Any elite jōnin with even basic sensory ability would feel the pulse and trace it back to him.

'Doing that here would create more problems than it solves.'

He dropped the idea. Forced himself to turn away from the hall, to walk back toward the Hatake seating, to act as if nothing was wrong.

Kakashi glanced up as Renjiro slid back into the seat beside him. His visible eye narrowed slightly—not suspicious, just curious.

"What was the important matter you had to attend to?"

"Had to calm someone down."

Kakashi's mind immediately supplied the obvious conclusion. 'Sensei needed calming down?'

The thought was almost absurd. In all the time Kakashi had known him, Minato had seemed utterly incapable of nerves.

Kakashi had seen Minato do things that pushed the very boundaries of what shinobi could achieve. Things that seemed impossible even by the standards of a profession that routinely bent the laws of physics.

But the idea that Minato might be nervous before his own wedding…

It created a strange feeling in Kakashi's chest.

Warmth.

'He's human,' Kakashi realised. 'Even sensei. Even the Yellow Flash. He gets nervous too.'

He liked that thought. It made Minato feel more real, more accessible, more like someone Kakashi could actually relate to.

He didn't say any of this aloud. He just nodded at Renjiro's explanation and turned his attention back to the front of the hall.

---

The room was gradually falling silent. Guests settled into their seats, conversations dying to whispers, then to nothing. All eyes fixed on the front of the hall, where Jiraiya had taken his place to officiate the ceremony.

The Toad Sage looked surprisingly composed, given his earlier panic. His formal robes suited him, lending an air of dignity that his usual attire completely lacked. He stood straight, hands clasped before him, waiting.

The doors opened.

Minato entered first.

He wore formal wedding attire—a white ceremonial kimono of pure silk, layered beneath a black haori cloak bearing subtle patterns that caught the lantern light. Traditional sandals adorned his feet. His posture was perfect, his expression calm, his gaze fixed on the altar ahead.

He walked with the same focused grace he brought to everything—as if this, too, was a mission, and he intended to complete it flawlessly.

He reached the altar and turned to face the doors.

The doors opened again.

Kushina entered.

A soft murmur rippled through the crowd—not of disapproval, but of genuine appreciation.

She was beautiful.

She wore a traditional bridal kimono—a shiromuku of pure white silk, its surface adorned with intricate embroidery that caught the light with every movement. The sleeves were long, trailing elegantly behind her. Her hair, that unmistakable, vibrant red that had always set her apart, was styled in an elaborate arrangement, accented with decorative combs and pins. A white bridal hood, the tsunokakushi, covered the top of her head, symbolising humility and the transition from maiden to wife.

She walked slowly toward the altar, her gaze fixed on Minato.

Minato watched her approach, and for just a moment, his perfect composure cracked. His eyes softened, his lips curved into the smallest smile—not the confident grin of the Yellow Flash, but something more private.

More genuine.

Kushina reached him. They stood together before Jiraiya, and the room held its breath.

Jiraiya cleared his throat—a dramatic sound that broke the silence and drew every eye.

"We are gathered here today," he began, "to witness the union of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki. In the presence of family, friends, and the spirits of this village, they come to bind their lives together."

The ceremony drew heavily from traditional Japanese Shinto marriage rites Renjiro had remembered exploring during his anime fanboy years. Every element had been carefully chosen, every gesture laden with meaning.

Ritual purification came first. Attendants presented ceremonial sake in elegant flasks. Offerings of rice, salt, and fish were placed near the altar, gifts to the spirits who watched over the village. The couple stood quietly as the purification was performed, their presence before the spiritual guardians of Konoha formally established.

Then came the central ritual: the san-san-kudo.

Three sake cups were presented—large, shallow bowls of lacquered wood. Minato took the first cup, raised it to his lips, and drank three small, symbolic sips. He passed it to Kushina, who did the same.

A second cup. Three more sips. A third. Three final sips.

Nine sips in total, each representing a different aspect of union: the joining of two individuals, the joining of two families, the joining of the couple before the spirits.

Next, vows were exchanged.

Minato spoke first, "I vow to protect you. To stand beside you in all things. To be your partner in peace and in war, in joy and in sorrow. This I promise before the village and the spirits."

Kushina's response carried her characteristic fire, but beneath it was something softer—a sincerity that made several guests smile.

"I vow to be your strength and your anchor. To walk with you through whatever comes. To build a life together, here in this village we both love. This I promise, with all that I am."

The words were simple. They were enough.

Jiraiya raised his voice slightly, his tone formal and declarative.

"By the authority vested in me by this village and its traditions, I declare this ritual complete. Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki are now officially husband and wife."

For a heartbeat, there was silence.

Then the hall erupted.

Applause thundered through the space, mingled with cheers and calls of congratulations. Stiff formalities dissolved into genuine celebration.

Minato and Kushina stood together at the altar, hands clasped, facing the crowd. Both were smiling now—genuine, unguarded smiles that transformed their faces.

They were married.

Renjiro watched all these from his seat beside Kakashi, his expression carefully neutral.

The ceremony had been beautiful. The joy in the room was palpable. For a moment, he let himself simply feel it—the warmth, the hope, the simple happiness of two people beginning a life together.

After all, he knew that Minato and Kushina wouldn't live happily ever after.
