The Sphinx blinked in surprise, then let out a low, frustrated growl. "A child of Athena, then? One of those annoyingly clever ones?"

Percy just smirked, feeling a surge of confidence. "No. I am a child of Poseidon."

"GROWL!" the giant creature roared in what sounded like pure, pained humiliation, to have been bested in a battle of wits by a son of Poseidon, of all people.

It growled again, a deep, rumbling sound in its chest. It looked at Percy with its intelligent, angry eyes and then, a cruel smile spread across its beautiful face.

"You may have answered my riddle correctly, son of Poseidon, but do not get too cocky. Your time will come soon enough. Beware the rise of the Titans! They will destroy Olympus and all you hold dear, and-"

"-Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know all about the stupid Great Prophecy," Percy snorted dismissively, cutting her off. He had heard enough dire warnings to last a lifetime. "Now, if you do not mind, move aside, birdie. I have a maze to clear out for my friends."

The Sphinx glared at him with pure hatred, but, having lost the riddle, she was honor-bound to let him pass. She took off into the air with a powerful beat of her eagle wings, quickly disappearing up into the dark clouds above the maze.

Percy chuckled to himself and continued on, hoping to catch up to Harry. But seeing as the maze walls kept moving and shifting, he might have already lost his chance to find him easily.

He ran and ran, looking for someone, anyone, but just then, he heard a voice shout from a nearby corridor, "Imperio!" Percy's eyes went wide with shock.

'Who in their right mind would use a forbidden Unforgivable Curse here, in the middle of the Triwizard Tournament?!'

Percy immediately ran towards the direction of the voice, westwards, if his internal compass was correct. He ran hard, and when he rounded the next corner, he spotted a dark, cloaked figure rushing down another corner, just as the magical hedges covered his route behind him, sealing the path. "Hey! Stop!" Percy called out, but there was no response.

The demigod took another sharp turn, and then, "Bombarda!" A blast of explosive spell fire flew straight at him from the darkness ahead.

Percy ducked just in the nick of time, feeling the heat of the spell as it flew right over his head and slammed into the hedge behind him.

The demigod scrambled back to his feet and looked up to see Viktor Krum, the Durmstrang champion, leveling his wand at him again, his eyes wide and unfocused.

"Avada Kedavra!" A sickening jet of green light came flying out of Krum's wand. Percy, his demigod reflexes screaming, leaped high over the deadly green death beam.

"Stupefy!" Percy shot back in rapid succession, firing off five quick stunning spells without even thinking.

Three of the red bolts of light missed their mark, but two of them hit Krum squarely in the chest. The Bulgarian champion crumpled to the ground, unconscious.

Percy ran over to the other champion's side and quickly looked him over. He noticed that the boy was bleeding from a shallow cut on his left hand, but it was nothing too deep.

The curse... he must have been Imperiused, forced to attack.

But by who? Not Harry, Percy knew; he was too kind and noble to use such dark magic.

And it could not have been Fleur, as the cloaked figure Percy had seen running away was not wearing her distinctive blue Beauxbatons robes.

The demigod looked around the empty, silent corridor. They were not alone in this maze.

There was someone else inside here with them, a hidden player.

And if the Fates were as accurate as they always were, this hidden man was the one responsible for putting Harry's name into the Goblet of Fire in the first place. That meant, most likely, it was a Death Eater.

Percy's wand hand clenched and unclenched, his knuckles white. He was going to have to track down a killer. But first, he had to deal with Krum.

He pointed his wand straight up into the air and sent out a huge wave of bright red sparks, the signal to alert the tournament officials that a champion was in trouble and needed help.

He then quickly ran to the grassy fern wall where he had seen the mysterious man run through and leveled his wand at it.

"Incendio Maxima!" The powerful spell burnt a huge hole through the hedge in seconds, allowing Percy to jump through to the other side just as it started to regrow.

Choosing a direction completely at random, he ran into the grassy hedge corridor and ran and ran, until he came upon his next challenge: a giant, two-tailed scorpion-like creature that was bleeding fire out of its sharp stingers.

Percy groaned in recognition and disgust. 'A Blast-Ended... something... damn it, Hagrid!' He leveled his wand at the disgusting creature. He had no time for a long, drawn-out fight.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The levitation spell hit the thing squarely, but it showed absolutely no reaction at all.

Instead, the monster was now alerted to Percy's presence and began charging straight at him, its fiery stingers raised high.

"Damn it," the demigod hissed as he leaped back, narrowly avoiding one of its fiery stingers. He sent a powerful Bombarda spell back at it, which managed to blast off a chunk of its tough exoskeleton.

He then quickly started running backwards, firing off several more spells fireballs, cutting spells, even a semi-dark spell that was supposed to cause uncontrolled bleeding. But nothing seemed to work on the magical beast.

"Fine then," Percy growled, his patience wearing thin. "If I cannot harm you, then I will just trap you." He turned around and ran away as fast as he could, the damn thing following closely behind him, crashing through the hedges.
