Chapter 14 — The Vampire Who Heard His Name

The moon above the city was red.

Seraphina Vale stood alone on the highest balcony of the palace.

Below her, an entire city stretched into the darkness.

Black towers rose from the ground like enormous tombstones.

Thousands of crimson lights illuminated the streets.

The people below moved quietly.

Too quietly.

No one spoke loudly near the palace.

No one needed to be reminded who ruled this territory.

Seraphina rested both hands against the stone railing.

She had been standing there for nearly an hour.

Waiting.

Listening.

Feeling.

Something had changed.

She knew it.

She had known the moment it happened.

Nine years ago, she had felt his presence disappear.

Tonight—

she felt it return.

Not strongly.

Not completely.

But enough.

Victor.

Her eyes closed.

For a moment, she could remember his face exactly as it had been.

His smile.

His voice.

The way he used to look at her when he thought she wasn't watching.

She opened her eyes.

"He came back."

A voice behind her answered.

"Yes, Your Highness."

Seraphina didn't turn.

"You verified it?"

"Three independent sources."

"Explain."

The servant approached carefully.

"The Gate network registered an anomaly in the human world."

Seraphina remained silent.

"The anomaly carries a dimensional signature associated with the Eclipse incident."

Her fingers tightened against the stone.

"Victor."

"Yes."

Seraphina finally turned.

"Where?"

"We don't know."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Then find him."

"We have already begun."

"How long?"

"We cannot say."

Seraphina stared at him.

He immediately lowered his head.

"Forgive me."

She walked toward him.

Her footsteps were quiet.

"Do you know what nine years feels like?"

The servant remained silent.

Seraphina stopped in front of him.

"It feels like an eternity."

She walked past.

"Find him."

"Yes, Your Highness."

"And when you do..."

She stopped.

"Don't approach him."

The servant looked up.

Seraphina's expression was calm.

Almost gentle.

"Tell me where he is."

"As you command."

The servant bowed.

Then disappeared into the darkness.

Seraphina returned to the balcony.

Her eyes turned toward the distant Gate.

"I told you I'd find you."

A faint smile appeared.

"You promised you'd come back."

Earth

Victor stood inside the training chamber.

A reinforced combat room had been prepared for him.

The walls were covered in layered impact-resistant material.

Several cameras watched from the ceiling.

Ward stood behind the observation glass.

Lyra was beside him.

Her arm was still wrapped in a medical bandage.

"You shouldn't be here," Ward said.

Lyra looked at him.

"I can stand."

"That's not what I meant."

"I'm not going into the Gate."

Ward sighed.

"Fine."

Inside the chamber, Victor rolled his shoulders.

He still felt strange.

The encounter with Specimen Seven had changed something.

He could feel it.

His senses were sharper.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

He could hear the electrical hum inside the walls.

He could hear Lyra breathing behind the glass.

He could even hear Ward's fingers tapping against the observation console.

Victor looked toward the glass.

Ward stopped tapping.

"You can hear that?"

Victor nodded.

"Apparently."

Lyra looked at Ward.

"How strong is he?"

Ward shook his head.

"We don't know."

Victor smiled faintly.

"That's comforting."

Ward activated the intercom.

"Your first test is simple."

"What?"

"Reaction time."

A mechanical arm emerged from the wall.

Victor watched it.

A light turned green.

The arm moved.

Fast.

Victor ducked.

The metal blade passed over his head.

Another arm attacked from the left.

Victor stepped backward.

Another from the right.

He twisted.

The blade missed his chest by centimeters.

Ward watched the monitor.

Victor moved again.

Another strike.

Another dodge.

Another.

Then silence.

Victor looked around.

"Is that it?"

Ward frowned.

Lyra smiled slightly.

"He's getting arrogant."

Victor heard her.

He smiled.

"Maybe."

Ward activated another sequence.

The room changed.

Six mechanical arms emerged.

Victor's expression changed.

"You're joking."

"No."

The arms attacked.

Victor moved.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

He ducked beneath one.

Blocked another with his forearm.

The impact threw him sideways.

He recovered.

Another blade came toward his face.

Victor twisted.

The blade passed beside his cheek.

He grabbed the mechanical arm.

For a moment—

he didn't know how he knew what to do.

He pulled.

The machine's joint snapped.

Victor stared at his hand.

The System appeared.

[COMBAT MEMORY FRAGMENT DETECTED.]

[RECOVERY AVAILABLE.]

Victor frowned.

"Not now."

The panel disappeared.

Another mechanical arm attacked.

Victor caught it.

This time he deliberately moved.

He twisted.

The arm broke.

The machine shut down.

Silence.

Ward stared through the glass.

Lyra looked at him.

"That wasn't normal."

"No."

Victor looked toward them.

"Can I get something harder?"

Ward frowned.

"Absolutely not."

Victor laughed.

An hour later, Victor sat in the briefing room.

A large digital map occupied the wall.

Ward stood beside it.

"This is the Gate you'll be entering."

Victor studied the image.

A circular distortion hovered above a stretch of abandoned industrial land.

"The Gate is stable?"

"Yes."

"How long has it been open?"

"Four days."

Victor looked at him.

"Four days?"

"Most Gates remain open between several hours and several weeks."

"What happens when they close?"

"Anything inside is trapped."

Victor frowned.

"Or?"

"Anything outside that hasn't crossed back is trapped on the other side."

Victor looked at the map.

"And what happens to Gates that stay open?"

"They become stronger."

"Stronger how?"

"More stable."

Ward changed the image.

A graph appeared.

"The longer a Gate remains open, the easier it becomes for matter to pass through."

Victor nodded.

"Which means more creatures can cross."

"Correct."

"And that's why you're sending me in."

Ward looked at him.

"You're not being sent in alone."

Victor looked at the team list.

Eight names.

Three soldiers.

Two researchers.

A medic.

Lyra.

Ward.

Victor frowned.

"Lyra is coming?"

"She volunteered."

Victor looked toward her.

"You've got a broken arm."

"It's not broken."

"Then what happened?"

"Dislocated."

Victor stared.

"That's worse."

Lyra smiled.

"I'm coming."

Victor looked at Ward.

"You allow that?"

Ward shrugged.

"She outranks my patience."

Lyra laughed.

Victor smiled.

For the first time since waking up—

he felt almost normal.

Then Ward changed the screen.

The next image appeared.

A photograph of the Gate.

Victor's smile disappeared.

Something was wrong.

He stepped closer.

"Zoom in."

Ward did.

Victor stared at the Gate.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Then he saw it.

A symbol.

Carved into the stone beside the Gate.

A circle surrounded by three curved lines.

Victor's chest tightened.

He had seen it before.

Not in a memory.

In the blood sample.

The same symbol his blood had formed.

Victor pointed.

"That."

Ward looked at it.

"You recognize it?"

Victor nodded.

"My blood."

Ward's expression changed.

"What?"

"The same symbol appeared in my blood."

The room became silent.

Victor stared at the image.

The System appeared.

[GATE CONNECTION CONFIRMED.]

[PERSONAL SIGNATURE DETECTED.]

Victor swallowed.

"Personal."

Ward looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Victor shook his head.

"I don't know."

But he did know one thing.

The Gate wasn't random.

It wasn't simply another portal that happened to appear near them.

It was connected to him.

And somewhere beyond it—

something was waiting.

Beyond the Gate

Seraphina stood before an ancient stone door.

Two vampire guards stood behind her.

The door was covered in the same symbol.

The circle.

Three curved lines.

Seraphina placed her hand against it.

The stone trembled.

A voice echoed from the other side.

"He's awake."

Seraphina smiled.

"I know."

"You should stop him."

Her expression disappeared.

"No."

"He will destroy everything."

Seraphina looked at the door.

"Perhaps."

"You still love him."

She closed her eyes.

"Yes."

"You know what he becomes."

Seraphina opened her eyes.

"I know what he was."

The voice became colder.

"And what he will become."

Seraphina smiled faintly.

"Then perhaps..."

She stepped away from the door.

"...you should be afraid."

Earth

Victor stood alone in the briefing room after everyone else had left.

The System appeared.

[NEW OBJECTIVE]

Victor stared.

[ENTER THE GATE.]

He waited.

Another line appeared.

[PRIMARY PURPOSE: RECOVER MEMORY.]

Victor frowned.

Then:

[SECONDARY PURPOSE: SURVIVE.]

Victor almost laughed.

"At least you're honest."

The System changed again.

[WARNING.]

Victor stopped smiling.

[THE GATE HAS BEEN ALTERED.]

His eyes narrowed.

"Altered by who?"

No answer.

Then a final message appeared.

[AN EXTERNAL ENTITY IS EXPECTING YOU.]

Victor stared at the words.

He suddenly remembered Seraphina's face.

The rain.

The umbrella.

Her voice.

"You promise?"

His chest tightened.

He whispered:

"Seraphina..."

Far beyond Earth—

a woman opened her eyes.

And smiled.

She had heard him.

Even across dimensions.

Even after nine years.

She heard him say her name.

And for the first time in almost a decade,

Seraphina Vale began to cry.
