"Back then, there were two men in Vancouver I really didn't want to see. One was you, and the other was Brother Wubai."
"So I rarely came back. If I could avoid seeing you, I would. Only when it was New Year or some holiday and I really had nowhere to hide would I reluctantly come back to Vancouver. And every single time you'd sniff me out, drag me off to some deserted corner and bully me. At the time I hated you to death, just thought you were pure scum, trash, a total beast."
Sheng Sheng gave a weak laugh. "If I wasn't a bit of a beast, I'd have no way to get close to you. You were like a hedgehog—every time you saw me, all your spines shot up. What was I supposed to do?"
He paused for a long time before he went on, "How much did you hate me back then?"
"Enough to tear your heart to pieces," Maimai said.
"The deeper the love, the deeper the hate."
Hearing his narcissistic line, Maimai snorted. "Don't be so full of yourself."
