Discomforted by Jintae's strange expression, Kyunghee let go of his shoulders and took a step backward, creating an arm's length gap between their bodies. She didn't like the look in his eyes. She had seen it before, experienced it all before in men who expressed romantic interest in her. She refused to believe the grim-faced detective harbored anything remotely romantic in his system. She must be hallucinating it because they were always at each other's throat like sworn enemies. That was the only sensible story in today's mess.
"Did you just leave him there alone? He was outnumbered," Kyunghee questioned instead, shoving the fleeting moment into the back of her mind, as if it had never occurred. "What if he got hurt? What if he needed help? Tell me you at least phoned in for help?"
