Chapter 173 - System Waking

"Away team to Alliant. Primary system power at fifteen percent," Tegris reported over the comms channel.

The Borg-El Aurian CMO stood under the bright, newly activated overhead panels of the vast Iconian corridor. The long-abandoned superstructure was finally bathed in warm, luminous light, chasing away thousands of years of shadow.

A low, subterranean hum echoed through the bulkheads as atmospheric pumps and environmental scrubbers groaned to life. The sudden rush of moving air rustled the seals on their EV suits—a heavy, stale breeze that had been trapped inside the spire for millennia.

"Oh, thank goodness! Airflow!" Stitch groaned through their helmet comms, watching the environmental readouts on their wrist display begin to stabilize. "Can we finally take these EV suits off?"

"I wouldn't advise it just yet," Tegris replied, his tone firm and measured. "Breathing unrefined, stagnant air from a newly activated atmospheric grid can be just as hazardous to your lungs as drinking stagnant water. Give the life-support scrubbers a few more minutes to filter out the particulate buildup. Alliant, power levels are holding at twenty percent."

"How is the building looking from your position, Alliant?" Neil asked, tapping his wrist-mounted interface.

"It's working, Commander," the helmsman's voice crackled back over garbled static. "Power generation is climbing steadily. But... Commander, this spire is absolutely gargantuan. We've been scrubbing the solar panels for an hour, and we've barely scratched the surface of the total hull area."

"That's fine," Neil replied, offering a reassuring nod inside his visor. "We just need enough juice to bring the main command hub online. The Alliance engineering teams can handle the rest of the maintenance when they arrive."

"Other auxiliary subsystems are initializing," Tegris added, his voice dropping into its usual stoic cadence as his Borg tendrils remained linked to the wall interface. "Including... security grid proto..."

Before anyone could react, Dr. Kayuli's holographic form flickered violently, distorted into a jagged mess of pixels, and vanished instantly as the shipboard holographic link was severed.

BOOM!

The interface console Tegris was linked to exploded in a terrifying flash of crimson plasma and arcing electrical discharge. The violent feedback blast blew the Chief Medical Officer off his feet, launching his massive frame across the corridor. He slammed hard into the far bulkhead with a sickening crunch and collapsed onto the deck plates in a cloud of ozone and sparks.

Blaring red alarm light strips instantly flooded the hallway, and a harsh, metallic siren began wailing through the internal speakers.

"T!" Neil shouted, sprinting toward the fallen officer as the rest of the team rushed to his side. Neil slammed his glove against his combadge. "Away team to Alliant! Emergency medical transport! Beam Tegris directly to Sickbay!"

"Negative... Comm—" The helmsman's voice was drowned out by severe spatial interference. "—conian local def… shields just in…ized! We can't... lock onto... signal!"

"Defensive grid is active!" Veirik roared, his military instincts snapping into overdrive. He dropped to one knee, bringing his heavy phaser rifle to his shoulder and flicking the safety off. "Weapons hot! Take defensive cover now!"

The rest of the away team whipped out their hand phasers as heavy bulkhead hatches along the upper walls hissed open. Newly activated Iconian Swarmers and triangular Defense Probes poured out of the dispenser nodes in a tight, mechanical swarm.

A cold, synthesized voice boomed over the translator grid: "INTRUDER ALERT. UNAUTHORIZED BIOMASS DETECTED. PURGE PROTOCOL ENGAGED."

"Open fire!" Veirik barked.

He squeezed the trigger, unleashing a sweeping, full-auto volley of orange phaser pulses. The bright corridor lit up in a blinding spectacle of energy fire as the away team joined in, burning through the incoming wave of automated machines.

Chrome and dark-purple alien probes exploded mid-air as modern Starfleet phaser bolts tore through their hulls. Advanced as Iconian technology was, thousands of years of dormancy, cosmic dust degradation, and unfinished power conduits had left their local defense units brittle and prone to structural failure.

"Stitch!" Neil yelled over the deafening roar of phaser fire and exploding metal. "Find an access panel and shut down this security loop!"

"I can't read Iconian script!" Stitch yelled back, ducking low as a crackling beam of violet Antiproton energy scorched the wall inches above their head. "That's why we brought T!"

On the deck, Tegris groaned in agony, his cybernetic implants sputtering and venting tiny plumes of smoke as his body struggled to recover from the massive feedback surge.

"He needs a Borg regenerator unit!" Lusaali cried out, crouching beside the doctor to support his shoulders. "And a massive pain pill!"

While Lusaali tended to the injured officer, Stitch frantically pulled up the local layout on a padd, searching for an override junction while Veirik and Neil laid down a wall of suppressive fire.

Veirik let out a fierce, guttural roar, sweeping his rifle across the upper dispenser node and blasting the final three probes out of the air in a shower of brilliant sparks.

The corridor suddenly fell quiet, save for the blaring emergency sirens and flashing red lights. No more drones emerged from the hatches.

"Target sweep clear!" Veirik panted, his rifle smoking as he kept his eyes trained on the ceiling nodes. "I think we depleted this bay's local drone inventory."

"Agreed," Neil gasped, lowering his phaser and immediately dropping beside his injured Chief Medical Officer. "Lieutenant, hand me the dermal regenerator from T's medical kit!"

Lusaali scrambled, grabbing the whirring device from the pouch and handing it to her commander. Neil immediately pressed the emitter against Tegris's charred, sizzling wrist, where the frayed Borg tendrils were sparking erratically.

"This will repair the organic tissue, but it won't touch the internal circuitry," Neil muttered grimly. "T? T, can you hear me, buddy?"

Tegris let out a deep, raspy exhale, his artificial optics flickering back to life. "I am... functional," he moaned, grimacing as he slowly pushed himself up into a sitting position. "I experienced... a highly disagreeable electrical surge. I believe I survived only because the facility's baseline power reserves were so low."

Before their eyes, tiny microscopic Borg nanites began swimming through the damaged tissue. The frayed, blackened tendrils pulled back into his wrist, self-repairing as the singed skin smoothed over.

"I will manage," Tegris said, shaking his head to clear the static in his neural buffer. He held out a hand to Neil. "Help me up. We need to reach that command console before the secondary defense grid cycles back online."

—

Moving quickly through the blaring, alarm-lit corridors, the team dispatched a few, functioning probes along the way. The ancient security network was decaying, unable to mount a sustained counter-offensive against modern Starfleet weaponry.

The team reached a set of massive, aperture-style chrome doors. As they slid open, the group stepped into the central computer hub—one of the few fully completed and pristine chambers inside the entire megastructure.

"Now that I know how the system's feedback loops operate," Tegris said, his strength fully restored as he stepped up to the massive, glowing central interface, "let us attempt this again."

He extended his wrist tendrils, inserting them directly into the primary data ports. Cooperative blue code began cascading across the Iconian display as his Borg subroutines asserted control over the station's mainframe.

"Transmitting the Alliance's handshake protocols..." Tegris muttered, his brow furrowing as he monitored the data stream. "Wait... it is resisting."

The blue code on the screen suddenly turned a dark, volatile violet. Tegris winced, his fingers tightening as his neural link buzzed with heavy static.

"It's fighting back..." Tegris growled, struggling to maintain his grip on the network. "It feels as though... someone—or something—is actively rerouting my nanites, erecting new firewalls as fast as I can tear them down..."

Veirik raised his phaser rifle, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the room. "Did you say someone?"

In the center of the computer hub, the air began to warp. A swirling, unnatural void of dark purple smoke and crackling spatial energy coalesced over the central platform, coalescing into a looming, humanoid shape.

Veirik cocked his phaser rifle up, his jaw set. "I think we're about to meet them."
