Chapter 116 - Chapter 115: The voice behind the fog

Next day…

Just like that, two days passed as we started our time exploring Erisen's wonders, but to some of our distress, they were not what they were thought to be.

"Another cave… There is nothing but rocks here…" Shea grumbled. Even though this place was from a legend, there was nothing much to see.

"I did say there isn't much to see here," Remia says with a wry smile.

"I thought, because this place is from a legend, there would be hidden places or interesting things here." Shea and others looked around, searching for something, hoping to discover some hidden treasures. But to her distress, she couldn't find any.

Myu was feeling the same way, but in her case, she just started playing with Levy.

We are currently exploring the sixth wonder of the caves. It resembles the previous five underwater caves, consisting mostly of rocks. In the middle of the cave, there is an opening that leads to a chamber above water. At the centre of this chamber, there is an altar with a protruding stone.

[Another stone monument… this makes it the 6th one.]

I scanned the protruding rock and once again spotted magic circles forming a circuit beneath the layers of rock, just like the previous five I had encountered.

During my exploration of the first cave, I suddenly noticed it. The seal was almost seamless; the only reason I could sense it was the minuscule amount of mana leaking from it. Even then, no one else seemed to notice. As we moved on to the next cave, I observed that a similar seal was placed on another altar at the centre of each place.

Six similar seals are placed on the altars in the deepest chamber of a location that is mentioned in legends. [These 7 wonders are definitely acting like a seal to someone or something.] My eyes narrowed.

"Rihito? Did you find something? You've been staring at that altar for a while now," Shizuku asked, tapping my shoulder curiously.

"Nothing…" Rihito acts nonchalantly.

It's best to ignore whatever lies behind this seal, especially with the war against Ehit so close. I don't want another mess in my hands if I can avoid it.

"This place was a bust. There's nothing much to see here." I shrugged my shoulders.

"Well then, we'd better move on to the last place," Hajime took the lead as we left the place.

I was the last to step out, but just before I did…

[He..l..p…m...e] I heard a voice, pleading and whispering.

I immediately looked back, scanning the chamber, especially the altar, for the source of the voice. But there was no sign of anyone or any fluctuations in mana. The others seemed to act normally. [Did they not hear it?]

[A targeted telepathic voice?] I scanned the chamber again, but still I got nothing.

[Yeah, no, let's ignore that…] I walked away.

With that in mind, only one place of wonder remained: the shining sea. This rare event occurs once every full moon, but only if certain conditions are met, I have heard. We set out to witness the sight.

After about an hour, we arrived at the location. Rihito observed that this spot, where the shining sea is visible, coincidentally lies at the centre of six other sites that seem to serve as some sort of seal.

[That doesn't seem ominous at all, does it?] Rihito sarcastically thought.

"Papa? Is something wrong?" Myu asked, tilting her head.

"No, I'm fine." I looked at Myu playing with Levy. I watched the sun set over the sea, its glow illuminating the sky. "It will get dark soon; get back here, you two."

"Ok."

"Kyu."

We then sat on top of the submarine, waiting for the moment.

Myu jumped onto my lap and eagerly waited for the moment when the shining sea would show itself.

Levy huddled close to Myu and me, sharing the same excitement as Myu. Following them, others sat around us, waiting for the moment.

Hours passed as we waited, enjoying the moonlit sky, all the while sensing no fluctuations of any kind to indicate any phenomena.

"It's getting late. Are you sure it will appear today?" Hajime asked, seeing no sign of anything happening.

Shea exclaimed in frustration, "Not again!" as she felt her ears droop.

"Pipe down," Yue sighed, her voice betraying frustration.

"It's a rare event. Not much is known about it, except that it happens every full moon, though the timing always changes." Remia explained what she knows.

"We just have to wait, then," Hajime crossed his arms.

"We can't always get what we want sometimes." Shizuku looked at the view of the moonlit sky. She was like others, frustrated too.

"But I wanted to see the shining sea with everyone," Myu said sadly, her head drooping. "Before we leave here, I wanted it to be memorable."

We looked at Myu with a gentle gaze.

I wrapped my arms around her, coddling her, "Myu, even if we don't see the shining sea, we can still come back."

"Really?"

At her questioning look, I gently hugged her, saying, "Of course, we can come back whenever you want."

Levy, too, got closer and rubbed Myu's cheek to ease her.

"Kyu."

"Okay," Myu nodded, and yet a hint of sadness lingered.

"Let me show you something."

To cheer her up, I decided to do something. I created multiple orbs of fire around the submarine.

With a flick of my finger, the orbs of fire shot into the sky, exploding into a beautiful display of fireworks.

"Wow~" Myu gasped at the beautiful sight. Not just her, Shea, Yue, Remia and Tio looked at it with awe and wonder. While Shizuku, Hajime and Kaori looked at the scene with nostalgia.

"So beautiful," Myu's eyes sparkled in excitement.

"Kyu~"

"This reminds me of a summer festival, doesn't it?" This scene brought back memories of the times he had gone to summer festivals with his parents. His fist clenched in determination. No matter how much he had to endure, he was determined to return and reunite with everyone.

Yue took Hajime's hand and noticed a slight change in his mood. "Hajime?" she asked gently.

"Master, I can do this too," Tohru chimed in, patting her chest.

Tohru took a breath and fired a controlled breath attack, spraying it straight up, creating a beautiful display of fire that illuminated the surroundings.

"Big sister Tohru, this is awesome." Myu jumped off my lap and cheered for Tohru.

"Kyu~"

Just as we were enjoying our time, the sky suddenly clouded over, and thick fog surrounded us, consuming the light.

Tohru stopped, and we vigilantly looked around, noticing this unnatural event.

"What's going on?" Hajime shouted.

"I-I don't know. I have never heard anything about this…" Remia was flustered, taken aback by the sudden turn of events.

"Myu, Remia, stay close to me." Rihito's voice was commanding.

I used my senses and to probe the fog and found some similarities with the fog that covers the sea of trees, except for the distortion effect.

[A kind of barrier?]

Right then, right above us, a shadow of a giant whale appeared, circling us.

"Is that a whale?" Kaori whispered.

"Graaa…" Levy growled at it.

Tohru observes the seemingly hostile whale getting ready to unleash her breath attack.

"No! Big sister Tohru, don't attack it! Papa, big brother Hajime, please," Myu suddenly hugged Tohru, stopping her. Hajime and Rihito were ready to attack, but they paused because of her.

"Myu? What are you talking about?" I looked at her.

"He's not a bad guy. It is asking for help." Myu hurriedly said.

"What?" I asked. We looked at her in confusion.

"Can't you hear it? It's calling out to us," Myu said with absolute certainty.

The submarine began to sway as the sea grew turbulent.

"R-Rihito, look out!" Shizuku pointed above in a panic.

I then saw the whale speed up, creating a tornado right above us.

I was really tempted to cut down that whale and this fog altogether, but stopped because of Myu.

[I need the help of two creators on par with a master.]

I heard the same voice that I had heard previously.

[Is it coming from that whale?]

"Papa, please…" Myu asked pleadingly.

"Myu, what are you talking about?" Remia questioned her, not understanding what she was trying to say.

"Fine," I decided to trust her. "Everyone, hold on." With that warning, I created a barrier to protect us and keep us together.

We huddled together inside the barrier as the tornado hit.

Author's note:

To everyone here, I recommend playing Endfield because I'm currently enjoying it, and it's an amazing game. I pulled Zhuang Fangyi in my second multi-roll, and I think I'm becoming a bit addicted to watching my factory create and produce materials. It's so satisfying to see the numbers grow! Am I the only one who feels this way?
