Chapter 111 - The crucible of Veythra

The path to Terra narrowed through the Veythra Expanse, a choke-point of void routes flanked by shattered worlds and Warp storms. For centuries it had been a bulwark, defended by the Imperium's finest fleets. Now, it was a black fortress of Chaos, its stations fused with daemonflesh and orbiting around a corrupted forge world whose surface churned with fire and blood.

From the moment the fleet translated into realspace, the resistance was relentless. The enemy didn't wait for Shawn's approach — they came to him.

The Enemy's Opening Gambit

Twelve capital ships emerged from the Warp in tight formation, their hulls twisted mockeries of Imperial design. Each one bled warp-fire from its seams, and every gun turret glared like an eye. Ahead of them, thousands of smaller craft swarmed — corrupted boarding pods, hellforged interceptors, daemon-beasts that flew through void as if it were air.

Valen's psychic senses snapped open. "They're masking a greater presence. Something… vast."

Shawn's voice cut through the vox. "Formation Delta-Five. We hold the line here."

The Ember Vow's forward batteries roared. Eristan's Mars-forged macrocannons sent storms of steel through the swarm, vaporizing half a dozen enemy escorts in seconds. But the rest pressed in, ramming Imperial hulls, vomiting boarding parties into breach points.

The Boarding Wars Begin

Vulkar's squad was the first into the meat-grinder. The massive Salamander slammed through a boarding hatch, Armament Haki exploding from his fists with every strike. Daemon marines shattered under his blows, their armor buckling as if struck by siege guns.

Basur and Tahak flanked him, one cutting through with surgical precision, the other roaring as Conqueror's Haki crushed the morale of everything in his path.

Grey Knights dropped into the fray moments later, psycannons thundering, each shot guided by Observation Haki to find daemon hearts. Custodes squads moved like avatars of gold and shadow, halberds infused with Haki cutting deep through enemy champions.

Shawn Moves

Shawn appeared where the fighting was thickest. Spirit Projection flared around him, his liquid Haki manifesting into a whirling storm of blades that spun and struck at impossible angles. He carved a path straight through the daemon tide, each kill burning away warp corruption like acid on flesh.

A Chaos Hellbringer — a towering war engine of fused flesh and steel — burst from a breached hangar. It swung a clawed arm the size of a tank, only for Shawn to catch it mid-swing, Haki flooding his arms until the metal screeched. He wrenched the entire limb free and hurled it into a cluster of boarding pods, tearing them apart in a chain of explosions.

Valen Unleashed

At the heart of the Ember Vow, Valen anchored himself in a psychic trance, his mind stretching across the battlefield. The armour Shawn had forged for him blazed with warding runes, allowing him to wield both Warp power and Haki without the two tearing at each other.

Blue psyker fire erupted from his hands, each bolt sharpened with Armament Haki, passing straight through daemon wards that would have stopped any normal psychic attack. A Bloodthirster tried to charge his position — Valen met it head-on, striking with a Conqueror's Haki-infused psychic wave that hurled the daemon back into the void.

The Greater Threat Revealed

Then the Warp tore open above the Veythra Forge World.

A Blackstone fortress emerged, its geometry screaming with impossible angles, trailing chains of bound daemons in its wake. On its outer hull, an Undivided Greater Daemon stood — a fusion of all four Chaos powers, its body a constantly shifting amalgam of their forms.

Khorne's rage. Tzeentch's shifting eyes. Nurgle's rotting bulk. Slaanesh's perfect grace.

Its presence slammed against the wills of every warrior in Shawn's fleet.

For a heartbeat, even Custodes staggered.

The Counterattack

Shawn's Conqueror's Haki exploded outward in answer, a crushing tide of will that swept through every Imperial ship. The fear broke.

"All forces — with me!" Shawn's voice was thunder.

Strike teams launched simultaneously, Custodes and Grey Knights boarding the Blackstone fortress alongside Shawn's original Salamanders. The corridors bent reality around them — one moment metal, the next rotting flesh, the next raw warp-lightning storms.

Valdor took the lead in one assault lane, his halberd a golden arc of destruction, every swing echoing with his newly awakened Conqueror's Haki.

The Final Clash

They found the Undivided Daemon in the central chamber — a cathedral of screaming souls. It moved like liquid shadow, every blow a different god's weapon. Against any other foe, it would have been invincible.

But here, against an army where every single leader had mastered Haki, it began to falter.

Vulkar slammed it with Armament-coated fists. Basur's Observation let him evade every counterstrike. Tahak's Conqueror's bursts rattled its focus.

Shawn closed in, Spirit Projection shifting into a massive warhammer that glowed white-hot. Each swing cracked its hide, each hit forcing more of the gods' essence to bleed out.

Valen's psychic storm locked the daemon in place. "Now, Shawn!"

One final blow — a direct, two-handed smash — and the daemon's body exploded into warp-light, its death scream echoing across the entire Veythra system.

Aftermath

The fortress fell silent. Enemy fleets scattered. Loyalist control flags were planted on the station, and Eristan's tech-priests began purging the forge world below.

On the Ember Vow's bridge, Shawn stood at the viewport, eyes fixed on the star lane that led deeper toward Terra.

"That was their first real attempt to stop us," he said.

Valen stepped up beside him. "Then they know you're coming."

Shawn's lips curled into the faintest of smiles. "Good."
