Chapter 65 - The flame Spreads

3rd POV – Aboard The Ember Vow, Warp Transit

The Warp swirled outside the reinforced hull, its screaming colors bent and muted under the Haki-infused wards. Inside the strategium, Shawn Newman stood over a holo-map of the Segmentum Obscurus. Dozens of crimson pins marked worlds either cleansed or burning.

The room was crowded: Vulkar, Tahak, Basur, Valen, Serkan, Vorn, Gaius, Hekor, and Solan. Mortal officers stood along the edges, their eyes fixed on the projections.

Shawn's voice was calm.

"Our victories are being noticed. That means resistance will grow, and allies will come — some to join us, some to test us. It's time to bring more blades into the fold."

3rd POV – The Target

The first pin he tapped pulsed ominously. Krythe's Maw, a dead mining world now inhabited by the Azure Wardens, a wayward Astartes company. Once Imperial Fists successors, now living in self-imposed exile after refusing a High Lord's command. They had firepower, skill… and bitterness.

"Perfect candidates," Shawn said.

Vulkar's grin was wolfish.

"If they refuse, we show them why they shouldn't."

Valen's eyes glowed faintly as he scanned the data.

"Their captain is a psyker. He'll notice me long before we land."

"Good," Shawn replied. "Let him."

3rd POV – Landing at Krythe's Maw

The surface was a wasteland of rusted mineheads and jagged rock. The sky was thick with iron dust. The Azure Wardens met them in formation — forty Astartes in azure and gold, bolters raised.

At their front stood Captain Adrast Korven, psychic hood humming, force sword drawn.

"You come uninvited," Korven said, voice like gravel.

Shawn stepped forward, helm under one arm. His Spirit Projection flared subtly, a shimmer around him that made the dust recoil.

"I came to invite you to something greater."

Korven's gaze swept over Shawn's warriors — Salamanders, Raven Guard, Black Templars, Carcharodons, Ultramarines — all standing without visible tension, their Haki bleeding into the air like heat from a forge.

"Show me," Korven said.

3rd POV – The Test

The duel was immediate. Korven moved with psychic speed, force sword striking with bursts of telekinetic force. Shawn met him barehanded, liquid Haki coating his arms in blackened armor.

Every strike Korven threw was parried, redirected, or shattered. Shawn didn't press to kill — he pressed to teach.

At the fourth exchange, Shawn's Conqueror's Haki surged, cracking the ground in a perfect circle around them. Korven's psychic wards buckled, his mind struck by the sheer weight of will.

Shawn stepped back.

"Fight beside me, and your company will learn this power."

Korven, breathing hard, looked to his men. No one spoke. Finally, he lowered his blade.

"The Azure Wardens will follow the Flame."

3rd POV – Shadows Watching

Far away, in the golden vaults of the Imperial Palace, a single Custodian stood before a hololithic projection of the duel. The figure's voice was deep, resonant.

"He moves with certainty. His will eclipses even some of ours."

Another Custodian stepped forward.

"The Captain-General will want to know."

3rd POV – Titan, Fortress-Monastery of the Grey Knights

In a sanctum lit only by the silver light of a warded moon, a lone Brother-Captain of the Grey Knights traced runes into a libram. He paused, eyes narrowing.

"I felt it again," he murmured. "A presence in the Warp… and a will that denies it."

His gauntlet clenched around the libram.

"If this Shawn Newman can truly shield warriors from corruption, we will find him."

Shawn Newman POV – Return to The Ember Vow

The Azure Wardens settled aboard quickly. I made sure their captains and sergeants were given quarters near the strategium — easier to keep them close, easier to teach them Observation and Armament Haki from day one.

I caught Vulkar smirking as he sparred with one of their sergeants, hammer meeting sword in a shower of sparks. The Warden was strong, disciplined… and still losing.

Good. They had room to grow.

Valen joined me at the observation deck.

"The Custodes will come sooner than you think."

I didn't look at him.

"Let them. I don't want soldiers who hide from challenge."

Outside, the Warp rippled like an ocean under moonlight. Somewhere out there, enemies were already moving against us. And somewhere closer, the Emperor was watching.
