3rd POV — Waystation Nine, Sealed Drill Bay
Gold filled the hall in silent ranks. Two thousand Custodians—spears grounded, eyes steady. Shawn stood with Valen at his right; Vulkar, Tahak, Basur behind. Grey Knights flanked them—Thane and Cael up front.
Shawn pressed his palm to Aurelian's chest. Liquid Haki flowed—warm, firm, not Warp. A hidden lock clicked. Aurelian's gaze sharpened. Observation took; Armament stirred like a promise.
Then the work blurred: a two-day rite compressed to breath and will—Shawn's hand to auramite breastplates, that same click again and again, Valen steadying rough edges with a quiet, selective Conqueror's pressure. By the final line, sweat ran and Shawn's forearms burned in a clean way, but the door was open for all of them.
No speeches, Shawn thought. Teach. Then prove.
Advanced Drills — Masters vs New Blood
"Observation," Shawn said. "Hips tell truth; shoulders lie."
Aurelian corrected a guard with two fingers. Makarion drilled a phalanx sight sweep until five helms turned as one to the same feint. Dymas learned to step heavy without thumping; Leto read targets across the bay without moving his head.
"Armament," Shawn said. "Hardness is timing. Blacken at impact; release next beat."
He struck forearms with a Wedge. Black snapped at touch, vanished clean. Makarion turned it into cadence: "Harden—release—harden—release," a soft auric resonance rolling down the line.
"Burst link—eight seconds max."
"Three… two… link." Eight seconds. "Break." No wobble.
"Twin Seal," Valen added. "Aegis threads through Armament—doesn't sit on top."
Grey Knights layered in; the fit was clean.
Sparring (masters set the bar):
Vulkar vs Aurelian: Vulkar read the half-beat grip change, hardened at impact, and tapped chestplate by a knuckle's width. 1–0.
Tahak vs Dymas (Allarus): Tahak stole the tile with Wardstep, palm-edge to gorget at the beat. 2–0.
Basur vs Makarion (Tribune): Basur bullied with short emission bursts; Makarion adapted fast and nearly stole the rematch by changing count mid-step. 3–1 overall, lesson delivered: the Salamanders were masters—for now.
Shawn's voice stayed even. "You'll catch them. How fast depends on discipline."
3rd POV — Bridge Alert
"Shrine world Ardentia," Solan reported. "World Eaters with Dark Mechanicum support. Three beat-eater towers—false cadence fields. Guard lines breaking."
Valen's jaw tightened. "They're targeting our doctrine."
Shawn nodded once. "Set course. We'll show them ours doesn't break."
Ardentia — Ground
Red sky. Bells out of time. Three brass towers throbbing wrong beats above the capital.
"Mk.IIc Arrays forward," Solan ordered. Null bubbles overlapped; Aegis handshake primed. Hekor's crews rammed Harmonic Pins v2 into broken roads; blue tell-lines lit honest lanes.
"Wardstep," Tahak called. "Tiles one-three-five. Lock ankles."
Mortals moved heel–toe on the strip; shoulders lowered as Drill Pulse—step, step, slam—beat panic down. Vorn's chant braided through like a hand on a shoulder.
A World Eaters wedge smashed in. Chain-axes screamed.
"Twin Seal!" Vulkar barked. Salamander hardening snapped black at impact; Grey Knight Aegis threaded in the same beat. The first storm died at the wall.
Vulkar took a chop on hammer-face and fed it down into the stones—Forge Rebound—shock bled harmless. Thane's Aegis Spike made air heavy at a gorget for a beat; the follow-up landed. Tahak read the hip and stepped inside with Wardstep, palm-edge striking elbow exactly on the harden—axe dropped. Basur's short emission punch caved a chestplate seam; the next swing he took on hardening, shoved the man flat, and laughed. The line around him steadied.
Technique note — Emission (advanced Armament/Ryuo): Push Busoshoku outside the skin for a short, decisive hit into joints/cores. Costs stamina. Pulse it; never hold.
Tower One — Brass & Chain
The first tower hunched over a granary square. A Dark Apostle chanted; Rubricae locked the stairs.
"Mirror Break," Shawn snapped. A six-count Null Net stripped mirror-stairs to ghosts. "Right path's real." Serkan cut seams. They climbed on Wardstep, ankles locked where stone admitted it existed.
Shawn hurled Chains of Binding into ribs—four. Drain hit hard; micro-lattice fed some back. He planted and pulled. The wrong beat missed a click.
"Window," Tahak called. "Three… two… now!"
Vulkar's hammer and Aurelian's spear cracked opposite ribs. The Apostle swung a chain mace—Shardguard popped at Shawn's jaw—ring—gone. Shawn cut the rhythm with a Wedge at wrist; weapon fell. Valen stepped in and said "Down," Conqueror's tight and selective; the Apostle knelt. Cael pinned. Tower one collapsed.
Streets — Hold the Blue Line
World Eaters flooded from a transit tunnel; the beat-eaters pulsed wrong time. Mortals wavered.
Valen toggled the dampener in short bursts—on, off, on—slicing power off the field and creating windows.
"Mk.IIc handshake—now!" Solan called. Two Arrays + Aegis stacked a ten-meter null for eight seconds. The blue corridor cleaned the air; mortals surged through on Drill Pulse. Bubble cooled with a click; crews reset for four minutes later. Honest tool. Honest cost.
Tower Two — Roof Work
On a hab roof, a Warp-Smith fed plates into the second tower.
"Pin the hatch," Hekor said. Pin—twenty-five seconds of honest ladder.
"Mirror Break," Shawn cleared false rails. Basur took the Warp-Smith's knee with a short emission burst. Thane's Aegis Spike shoved a chain wide. Tahak finished the cast on the beat.
Chains into spine—drain, pull—wrong beat missed; Vulkar and Aurelian broke ribs. Tower two died.
Cathedral — Champion & Last Tower
The last tower loomed over stained glass. A World Eaters Champion in cataphractii plate barred the door.
Shawn met him. No flourish.
Shardguard at temple—ring—gone. Wardstep inside the sweep. Wedge on haft to break timing. Hardening at impact to catch the knee. Short emission punch to gorget seam. The Champion staggered. He tried to rise.
"Down," Shawn said—Conqueror's like a bar across the back, tight and selective. The plate knelt. Aurelian speared the tower's last rib; Vulkar hammered. Beat-eater stopped. Ardentia breathed.
Aftermath — Street Level
Guard lines held. Bells tolled right. Null crews walked the blue tell-line; Salamanders taught Guardsmen to breathe on the count because they asked.
Shawn stood with hands on hips, letting the ache in his forearms be what it was—work. Observation reached a street further; Armament answered clean; Conqueror's sat heavy and ready, a tool he'd lift wider when he had to—someday city-wide, then more. Not today. Today was enough.
Aurelian faced him. "Doctrine holds under weight."
Valen's slate pinged. "Civilians secured. The High Lords are… watching."
"Good," Shawn said. "We don't perform. We show work."
Drill Deck — Honest Spars (After-Op)
Helms off. No music.
Vulkar vs Aurelian: 1–1 split—Vulkar on hip-read + harden, Aurelian by changing count.
Tahak vs Makarion: Tahak taps gorget with Wardstep; Makarion answers next pass on timing.
Basur vs Dymas: Basur's short emission bursts vs perfect posture—draw, both laughing.
Shawn walked the line, corrected elbows, set feet. "No new tricks," he said. "Cleaner beats."
Technique note — Conqueror's (Haoshoku) discipline: Short, selective pulses for stun or pause. Cut at ten seconds; greed drops you. Coating on strikes against worthy foes only—save it.
Throne & Eye
Support Extended stamped again. Audit Escalated stamped louder. Mechanicus petitioned use-rights; Eristan returned field-use only with brighter ink.
On Titan: Shadowflame proven. Expand.
In the Eye, four hatreds adjusted routes. Khorne named a blade and pointed it. Tzeentch cursed a seam he still couldn't see. Slaanesh set a stage. Nurgle watered a garden that would bloom wrong.
The bill grew.
Shawn POV — Observation Alcove
One quiet minute. Stars like nails. Arms warm. Not tired—worked.
They show up under lying skies. We meet them halfway. We keep it clean.
Valen's reflection joined mine. "Next map burns bright."
"Then that's where we go," I said, and stood.
Technique note — Null Net: Six-count field to strip illusions. Use in short windows. Overuse chews stamina.
We headed back to the drill deck. Dawn comes fast when you don't stop.
