Chapter 35 - Chapter 35

The owls started showing up before Harry had even finished unpacking his trunk.

He'd been back in Britain for less than three days, and his desk already looked like a fucking disaster zone. Piles of letters everywhere. Dinner invitations from people he barely knew, fancy gatherings he had zero interest in, and way too many requests for private dueling shows. Wizengamot members who had never given him the time of day were suddenly writing long letters about how impressed they were with his tournament performance.

The Department of Magical Law Enforcement sent a formal note asking him to consult on dueling techniques. It had Barty Crouch's name written all over it. Three different noble houses had started up correspondence chains, all eager to get cozy with Lord Peverell now that they'd decided the name actually meant something.

And then there was the press. The Daily Prophet had run at least one story about him every single day since he got back. Tournament recaps, sure. But they were also digging into his family history, the Peverell name, guessing about his future in the Wizengamot, and rehashing the assassination attempt in France. One article spent almost four hundred words just talking about how he dressed. It was ridiculous.

Rita Skeeter had already been turned away at the Hogwarts gates twice. Harry figured she'd try again soon. The woman never gave up.

"You're not even reading most of those," Amelia said one morning. She leaned against the doorframe wearing nothing but a t-shirt of his, sipping her tea and watching him sort through the fresh pile like it was junk mail.

"I'm reading the ones that matter," Harry replied. He set aside a letter with the Longbottom crest on it and tossed three others straight into the bin. "The rest are just people trying to get close because my name suddenly makes me useful."

Amelia raised an eyebrow. "How many actually matter so far?"

He held up the Longbottom letter. "This is the only one."

She took another sip and smirked. "Welcome back to Britain."

Harry leaned back in his chair and rubbed his eyes. It wasn't all bad, though. He understood how this game worked. His position had changed. The tournament win had boosted him, but surviving that ambush in France had done even more. People loved a survivor. There was something about walking away from professional killers that made the wizarding world pay attention.

Just two days after getting back, he'd gone into Diagon Alley and got stopped six times before he even reached Flourish & Blotts. Two witches he'd never met before suddenly found reasons to stand way too close while they chatted. A third-year from Hogwarts asked for his autograph with wide eyes, like Harry was some Quidditch legend. He signed it, feeling stupid the whole time.

He told Narcissa about it that same evening. She laughed outright.

"You're going to have to get used to it," she said, not sounding sorry at all. "You won an international tournament. You took out five attackers and left one of the scariest dark wizards in Europe cursed and barely able to function. Plus you're Lord Peverell. They're actually being pretty tame about it."

"It's going to make it impossible to go anywhere without people noticing," Harry muttered.

"Yeah," Narcissa said, smiling. "It is."

He had to admit she was right. Being harder to ignore had its advantages.

Three days later, Harry was deep in the library when Dumbledore showed up. He'd been reading about blood-bound wards, completely focused, when he finally noticed the headmaster sitting across from him like he'd been there the whole time.

"I hope I'm not interrupting anything too important," Dumbledore said, his voice warm and pleasant.

Harry closed the book. "Nothing that can't wait. Good afternoon, Headmaster."

"Good afternoon." Dumbledore's bright blue eyes flicked to the stack of books beside Harry. "Blood wards. An interesting choice."

"I've been trying to learn more about them. Figure it'll help when I set up my own place someday." Harry leaned back. "You didn't come here just to talk about my reading list."

Dumbledore smiled and folded his hands on the table. "No, I didn't. I've been meaning to talk to you since you returned, but things have been busy. I imagine your schedule has been even worse."

"The owls won't leave me alone," Harry said.

"I'd be surprised if they did. You gave everyone plenty to talk about." Dumbledore paused for a second. "First, I want to say your performance in the tournament was truly impressive. Not just the victories, which were impressive on their own, but the way you handled yourself the whole time stood out to everyone."

"Thank you, Headmaster," Harry said simply.

"Filius, in particular, has been extremely vocal about it," Dumbledore continued, his eyes crinkling with amusement. "I think he's cornered every teacher who stayed still long enough to listen."

Harry grinned a little. "I heard. He owled me twice while I was still in France. Then he showed up outside my room the morning I got back. In person. He was more excited about those duels than I was."

"Filius sees dueling as an art," Dumbledore said. "Watching someone he tested and endorsed perform so admirably on an international stage is a matter of pride for him. He spent forty-five minutes at a staff meeting breaking down your use of the Caduceus Sequence. In a meeting that was not, in any manner, a dueling lesson. They suggested he save it for his students, but he's shown no signs of remorse."

Harry thought about Flitwick's last conversation, which had indeed included a fairly feverish breakdown of the Caduceus Sequence and what it implied about his theoretical framework for offensive spellwork.

"He's right that students should learn about it," he said. "Though I bet half of them will want to start a dueling club right away."

"I imagine several are already planning one," Dumbledore replied, sounding genuinely happy about it. "You've made quite an impression on an entire generation of Hogwarts students without even being here. That's not a small thing."

They sat quietly for a bit. Sunlight streamed through the high windows, catching dust in the air. Somewhere in the stacks, Madam Pince was moving books around, the soft thumps echoing faintly.

Dumbledore's expression shifted after a while.

"Dolohov," he said.

Harry kept his face neutral. "Yeah. Messy situation."

"It is." Dumbledore chose his words slowly. He was never a man I admired. But he was genuinely skilled, by most accounts, remarkably so. To see that kind of ability turned toward something like this..." He shook his head. "It's always a loss when someone with real talent chooses destruction over craft."

"I get that," Harry said. "His dueling in the arena was impressive, even if it was intentionally destructive. I would've happily faced him again in a proper match. Coming after me in the dark with a whole team? That's something else."

"Indeed." Dumbledore paused. "You and Mademoiselle Deschanel were very lucky."

"We were ready," Harry said calmly. "It probably looked like luck from the outside, though."

"Of course." Dumbledore eyed him keenly, and Harry had been on the receiving end of his full attention enough times before to know when the old man was genuinely working something out. "He escaped. which is quite remarkable given the circumstances. All attackers killed, one captured, Dolohov himself injured badly enough that the French aurors expected to find him within hours. And yet... nothing."

"He's always been good at disappearing, from what I've heard," Harry replied.

"True. But injured and cut off from help? That makes it much harder."

Harry shrugged. "I'm not completely upset he got away."

Dumbledore raised an eyebrow.

"The French aurors will catch him eventually," Harry said. "Or the British. Or the Bulgarians. They're apparently mortified and very motivated. And when they do, there'll be a proper trial, everything laid out, and whatever network was behind the whole thing gets exposed." He picked up his quill and turned it over in his hand. "Dolohov running means whoever arranged to have me killed still hasn't been identified. I'd rather have that resolved properly than settled fast. The authorities doing their jobs well serves everyone better than a loose end that never gets pulled."

Dumbledore stayed quiet for a long moment.

"That is," he said, "a remarkably measured response from someone who was nearly assassinated."

"Nearly being the key word," Harry answered. He met the headmaster's eyes. "I'm sure they'll catch him soon. He can't hide forever."

Dumbledore watched him carefully. "No. I don't expect he can."

He stood up smoothly, and Harry got up too out of politeness.

"You handled everything in France with a great deal of skill and maturity, Lord Peverell," Dumbledore said, his voice lower now. "I hope you know how much I value having a young man of your quality in this world. Whatever else may come."

"I appreciate that," Harry replied.

"Take care of yourself." Dumbledore smiled. "And if Filius corners you again for one of his breakdowns, remind him his third years still need to master Finite Incantatem."

Harry laughed. "I'll tell him."

Dumbledore nodded and walked off between the tall shelves, his robes barely making a sound against the floor. Within moments, he was gone entirely. Harry stood there for a second, then sat back down and opened his book again.

The old man knew something. Or at least suspected. He'd probably pieced together the public reports, Dolohov's convenient escape, and his calm attitude about it all. But there wasn't anything to act on. Dumbledore was cautious. Whatever he thought, it wouldn't become a problem. Not here.

Harry turned the page and kept reading.

-Break-

Harry noticed Bellatrix first when he stepped into the room. She was stretched out on the sofa, her long legs taking up most of it, a glass of deep red wine in one hand. She watched her sister with a lazy, entertained grin, like she was enjoying a really good show.

Narcissa paced back and forth in front of the fireplace, her heels clicking sharply on the floor.

Harry caught the end of her rant as the door closed behind him and vanished into solid stone.

"—has no fucking clue what appropriate even means. If he tells me one more time that it's only proper for his future wife to spend time with him, I swear I'll—"

She stopped mid-sentence when she realized he was there. Bellatrix turned her head toward Harry, and her whole face changed. Her expression lit up, bright and warm, with that possessive edge she never tried to hide. She patted the cushion right beside her.

Harry crossed the room and dropped down onto the sofa. Bellatrix slid right against him before he could even settle, pressing her body close. Her dark hair brushed his jaw, and her hand flattened against his chest. She tilted her face up, expectant.

He kissed her without hesitation. She tasted like rich red wine, bold and heady. Bellatrix kissed with full hunger, the kind she never held back. Her free hand gripped his shirt tight, pulling him closer like she needed to make sure he wasn't going anywhere. Harry cupped her jaw, tilting her head slightly. A soft, approving moan slipped from her throat.

Across the room, Narcissa went quiet.

When they finally broke apart, Bellatrix settled against his side with a satisfied hum, like she had just marked her territory. Harry glanced over and saw Narcissa watching them both with a flat, unimpressed look on her face.

"Don't stop just for us," Bellatrix said lightly, her fingers tracing slow patterns over Harry's chest. "You were just getting to the juicy part, Cissy."

Narcissa's eyes narrowed. "You're genuinely the worst."

"Been telling you that for years," Bellatrix replied, swirling her wine. "You never listen."

Harry looked between the two sisters. Narcissa was still standing there, her body tense with frustration. He stood up, walked straight to her, and pulled her into his arms before she could snap at Bellatrix again.

Narcissa melted into the hug with a long sigh. She rested her head on his shoulder, and Harry felt the tight knots in her body start to loosen. He pressed a soft kiss on her hair and held her there, letting her breathe.

"Hey," he murmured quietly.

She exhaled again, slower this time.

Harry tilted her chin up gently and kissed her. This one was different from Bellatrix's fire. It was softer, deeper, slower. Narcissa's hands grabbed his collars, holding on firmly like she needed the anchor. Her lips moved against his with quiet intensity, pouring out all the irritation she'd been carrying.

When he pulled back, she looked up at him, still fighting to keep her usual composure but failing a little. Her cheeks were flushed.

"Better?" he asked.

"A bit," she said. Coming from Narcissa, that meant everything.

Harry smiled and took her hand. He led her back to the sofa and settled into the same spot beside Bellatrix, who had been watching with her chin resting on her hand and her wine glass tilted lazily. He leaned back and pulled Narcissa close on his other side, tucking her against him.

"Alright," Harry said. "What did Lucius Malfoy do this time?"

Bellatrix let out a mix of a laugh and a scoff. "He's been sending owls nonstop. Flowers. Even had someone deliver a pair of earrings. Tacky as hell. The kind you buy to show off how much gold you dropped, not because they actually look good."

"He's told me three separate times since I got back," Narcissa said, her voice flat and sharp, "that since we're supposed to get married, it's only proper for his future wife to start spending time with him. Like the contract already decides everything and what I want doesn't fucking matter."

"You didn't need her to spell it out," Bellatrix said from his other side. "You could smell Malfoy a mile away."

"Yeah, I could guess it was him," Harry agreed. "But the details help."

Narcissa shifted against him, straightening up a little. Her expression changed, turning more focused. "Harry."

"Mm?"

"Ask for my hand." She said it directly, without any hesitation. "Go to my family. Go to my grandfather. They'd say yes before you even finished the question. You know how they see you now." Her hand slid up his arm, gripping lightly. "Lucius doesn't even come close. If you asked, this whole stupid arrangement would be over."

Harry looked at her steadily. "You're impatient."

"Yes," Narcissa answered, completely honest. "Completely and totally impatient." Her eyes locked on his. "I'm tired of waiting to be yours in every way that counts. Public, formal, permanent. I'm done being careful about where I go, who sees us together, what I can and can't say. I want Lucius Malfoy out of my life for good." She moved, swinging one leg over his lap and settling directly on top of him. Her hands rested on his chest as she straddled him. Harry's hands found her waist automatically, his fingers spreading over the curve of her hips. "I'm impatient for the life we get after all this shit you're setting up. Do you have any problem with that impatience?"

His grip tightened on her waist, pulling her a little closer. The warmth of her body pressed firmly against him, and he could feel the steady beat of her heart.

Her face stayed serious, but her eyes burned with real want. She wasn't playing games. This was Narcissa laying it all out.

Harry held her gaze for a long moment, then leaned in and kissed her softly. She sighed into it, her fingers curling tighter into his shirt. He felt the exact second she let go of the tension and just sank into the kiss, their mouths moving slow and deep. One of his hands slid up her back, stroking along her spine while the other stayed firm on her hip, holding her steady in his lap. The kiss grew warmer, more heated, until their breathing turned heavier.

When they finally parted, Narcissa kept her forehead pressed against his, her eyes half-closed. Behind him, Harry heard Bellatrix set her wine glass down on the side table with a soft clink.

"The things I've got moving," Harry said quietly, his thumb tracing slow circles on her hip, "are going to handle all of it. Malfoy, the contract, the entire mess. Not piece by piece. All at once. Cleanly."

"How clean?" Narcissa asked, her voice lower now.

"Clean enough that nothing's left to untangle afterward."

She closed her eyes for a second, leaning against him. Harry's other hand moved to the small of her back, rubbing gently. Bellatrix shifted closer, pressing a light kiss to his shoulder before resting her hand on Narcissa's arm.

Narcissa opened her eyes again and looked at him. "Your things are taking forever."

"A little longer," Harry promised. "That's all. Then it's done."

She opened her eyes and looked straight at him. The frustration was all over her face, but it didn't stop her. She grabbed his face with both hands and kissed him harder, deeper, her tongue sliding against his like she'd been starving for it.

Bellatrix shifted right behind him. Her hands landed on his shoulders, her fingers digging in firmly, pressing into the muscle like she was claiming her spot. She leaned in close, her breath hot against his ear. "You know, I've been pretty fucking tolerant tonight."

Harry didn't pull away from Narcissa's mouth. "You've just been sitting there watching and drinking wine."

"Yeah, exactly," Bellatrix said, her voice low and amused. "That's extremely tolerant for me."

Narcissa broke the kiss just enough to shoot her sister a look. Bellatrix didn't look sorry at all. She reached over Harry's shoulder, turned Narcissa's face toward her, and kissed her sister full on the mouth. Narcissa kissed back instantly, her fingers still tangled in Harry's hair. He felt the exact moment Narcissa's body relaxed against him, all that leftover tension melting away.

When they pulled apart, Narcissa let out a soft laugh. "Alright. We're doing this now as well."

"We were always gonna do this," Bellatrix said, smirking.

Harry's hands were already working on the back of Narcissa's robes. She twisted to help him, her own fingers undoing his buttons fast. The heavy fabric slipped off her shoulders and pooled around her waist, leaving her in nothing but a thin, pale silk slip that clung to every curve. Bellatrix yanked Harry's shirt off from behind, then ran her warm palms all over his bare back, sliding up and down like she couldn't get enough of touching him.

"You're tighter than usual," she murmured, her thumbs pressing hard into the knots along his spine.

"Tournament shit still hasn't worn off," Harry said.

Bellatrix chuckled and kept rubbing. Narcissa watched them both, her hands resting on his chest. She leaned in and kissed along his jaw, his cheek, the corner of his mouth, and then moved down to his throat, sucking lightly.

Bellatrix kissed the back of his neck, right between his shoulder blades, before she moved around to his side. The three of them shifted together naturally. Narcissa leaned back into the cushions, pulling Harry down with her. Bellatrix stretched out beside them, her hand roaming over his side, tracing his ribs and hip.

He knew Narcissa's body so well by now. He knew exactly where she liked to be touched, where she got sensitive, and what she really craved even when she tried to stay composed. His hands moved slowly over her at first, sliding down her sides, feeling the silk bunch up under his palms. He watched her face the whole time, catching every little hitch in her breath.

Bellatrix wasn't just watching anymore. Her fingers traced his back and sides with clear hunger, pressing harder each time.

"You're not just watching," Harry said, his voice rough.

"I'm participating from the side for now," Bellatrix answered. "There's a difference."

Narcissa's voice came out lower, breathier. "She can get more specific if that side shit isn't enough."

"I was gonna say the exact same thing," Bellatrix said without any shame as she pressed in closer.

Harry pulled the silk slip up and over Narcissa's head. She lifted her arms to help and lay there completely naked. He ran his hands down her body, taking in the sight of her full breasts, the curve of her waist, and the smooth skin between her thighs. She reached up, tucked his messy hair behind his ear, and pulled him down into another deep kiss.

His mouth moved against her lips before descending to her throat, sucking gently, and then to her collarbone. He took his time, licking and kissing until he found that spot just below it. When he sucked harder there, her fingers tightened in his hair.

"Right there," she gasped, her voice hot.

He stayed on that spot, licking and sucking until her grip got almost painful.

Bellatrix had given up any pretense of staying on the sidelines. She pressed tightly against Harry's other side, kissing his neck while her hand slid down his stomach and wrapped around his hard cock. She stroked him slowly, squeezing just right, making him groan against Narcissa's skin.

Narcissa's eyes darkened as she watched her sister stroke him. Her chest rose and fell faster. She reached out and touched Bellatrix's wrist, not stopping her, just connecting the three of them.

Harry turned and kissed Bellatrix hard. She gripped his hair with her free hand and made a hungry little sound into his mouth. Then he went back to Narcissa, kissing her just as deeply. They found a rhythm, passing kisses between them so no one felt left out.

At some point Bellatrix's robes came off too. Her warm, naked body pressed against his side, her hands never stopping as she touched both of them.

The sofa wasn't enough anymore. They moved without words. The Room changed around them, giving them a bigger, softer bed perfect for what they needed. Narcissa lay back and looked up at Harry with those intense eyes.

"I've been waiting for this since you walked in," she said.

"I know," he answered.

"Then stop making me wait."

He didn't.

She wrapped her legs around his waist the second he settled between her thighs and pulled him in. Harry pushed forward, sliding his cock into her wet pussy in one smooth thrust. She let out a sharp exhale, her head falling back as he stretched her open. He stayed still for a second, letting her adjust to the thick fullness inside her.

"Don't be gentle," she told him.

He wasn't.

Harry started fucking her with deep, steady strokes right away. She met every thrust, her hips lifting off the bed to take him harder. Her hands gripped his back, herr nails digging in. Low, needy moans spilled out of her, nothing like the controlled woman she usually was. Each time he drove deep, her breath caught and she pulled him tighter.

"Fuck, Harry," she moaned, her voice breaking.

Bellatrix lay beside them, propped on one arm, watching closely. Her hand moved over Narcissa's waist and breasts, pinching her nipples lightly. She leaned down and kissed Narcissa's shoulder, then her neck.

"Look at you," Bellatrix whispered, almost to herself.

Narcissa turned her head. Bellatrix kissed her hard, their tongues sliding together while her fingers moved lower. She found Narcissa's swollen clit and rubbed it in tight, wet circles, matching Harry's rhythm.

The extra stimulation hit Narcissa hard. She broke the kiss with a loud gasp. Her whole body tensed, her thighs squeezing Harry's waist as her pussy started clenching around his cock.

"Oh Harry! Fuck yes!" She cried out.

Harry kept thrusting into her pussy, deep and steady. Narcissa's moans got louder, turning into raw, shaky sounds as her orgasm rolled through her. Her walls fluttered and pulsed around him, hot and slick. She raked her nails down his back hard enough to sting. Her hips bucked wildly against him while Bellatrix kept rubbing her clit, drawing it out longer.

Narcissa shook hard, gasping and moaning through every wave. Her pussy gripped him so tightly it almost pushed him over the edge too. He gritted his teeth and kept going, fucking her through the long, intense climax until her body finally started to relax. Her hands went slack on his back, but she was still trembling.

Harry slowed down and pulled out carefully, giving her a moment. He turned to Bellatrix, who was watching him with dark, impatient eyes.

"Finally," she said, her voice husky.

She pulled him on top of her fast, her legs spreading wide. Harry settled between them and pushed his cock into her soaked pussy in one thrust. Bellatrix arched hard, moaning loud as he filled her.

"More," she demanded right away.

He gave it to her, fucking her harder, deeper. She was incredibly responsive, her body moving with his, her legs locking behind his back. Her nails scratched down his arms as she moaned with every thrust.

Narcissa recovered quickly and rolled closer. She pressed against Bellatrix's side, kissing her sister's temple and neck while her hand played with Bellatrix's breasts, rolling the nipples between her fingers. Bellatrix grabbed Narcissa's hand and held it tight, moaning louder.

Harry fucked her with long, powerful strokes, grinding against her clit each time he bottomed out. The wet sounds of his cock sliding in and out of her filled the room, mixed with her gasps and moans. Narcissa leaned down and sucked on Bellatrix's nipple, making her sister cry out.

"Fuck, yes! Harder, Harry," Bellatrix groaned.

He picked up speed, slamming into her. Her pussy felt hot and tight, squeezing him with every thrust. Bellatrix's moans got higher, more desperate. Her thighs shook around him. Narcissa kept kissing and touching her, whispering dirty encouragement in her ear.

In no time, Bellatrix came hard, her back arching off the bed. "I'm coming! Fuck!" she cried out.

Her pussy clenched around his cock in strong pulses. Harry kept thrusting through it, drawing out every wave. She shook and moaned loudly, her body jerking with each contraction. Her nails dug deep into his arms as she rode it out. The orgasm seemed to last forever, rolling through her in heavy waves while she gasped and cursed.

When it finally eased, she laughed breathlessly, surprised and satisfied. Harry kept moving slowly inside her, his own climax building fast. He buried himself deep, groaning loud as he came hard. Thick spurts of cum filled Bellatrix while she clenched around him. Narcissa's warm hand stroked his back, and Bellatrix's fingers tangled in his hair, holding him through every pulse as they kissed furiously.

He stayed inside her for a long moment, breathing heavily as their lips parted. After a while, he pulled out gently and collapsed between them. Narcissa curled against his chest, her arm across his stomach and her head resting right over his heart. Bellatrix threw her leg over his thigh and pressed her face into his shoulder, her dark hair spilling everywhere.

His hands moved slowly over their bare backs, stroking gently. The room was quiet except for their breathing.

Narcissa let out a long, satisfied sigh.

"Better?" Harry asked softly.

"Much better," she whispered, pressing a lazy kiss to his chest.

Bellatrix hummed in agreement, nuzzling closer. Her hand drifted down to rest on his stomach, her fingers tracing light patterns on his skin. "Nothing like a good, hard fuck to get rid of silly thoughts," she said, her voice sleepy but content.

Harry smiled, feeling both women warm and relaxed against him. He kissed the top of Narcissa's head, then turned and kissed Bellatrix's temple. Their bodies stayed tangled together, their skin slick with sweat and their hearts still beating fast.

After a while, Narcissa shifted and kissed him again, slower this time, savoring it. Bellatrix watched them, then leaned in to join, turning it into a lazy three-way kiss full of soft tongues and quiet sighs. Hands wandered again, not urgent anymore, just affectionate touches along thighs, hips, and chests.

The night stretched on like that, comfortable and warm, with the three of them wrapped up together. They talked in low voices about nothing important, laughing softly between kisses. Eventually sleep pulled them under, but not before another slow round of touching and whispered pleasure, drawing out every sensation until they were completely spent.

-Break-

The port did not appear on any official maps. It existed for one purpose only. Take money from people desperate to cross the water without dealing with any authorities, drop them on whatever shore they had paid for, and stay completely silent about everything in between.

The conductor was not really a sailor or a captain. He was just the man who ran things. Thick-necked and experienced, he had handled this same operation for eleven years. His attitude toward passengers had hardened into something simple. They owed him money. They owed him speed. Nothing else mattered.

"Come on, move it ya lot!" He called out, walking along the gangway with his arms wide like he was pushing a flock forward. " Get off the bleedin' boat. I got a return crossin' in two hours an' I need this dock clear, so shift yer arses!"

Passengers trickled off in small groups. Families dragged too many bags behind them. One man wore a coat that looked too clean for this kind of travel. A woman kept her eyes fixed on the ground and held her children close to her sides.

Near the end of the line, one figure stood out.

He moved with careful steps, as if he was managing something hidden. Most people did not walk that way unless they had a reason to hide their limits. He stayed fully cloaked, the hood pulled low over his face. He looked like he had to work hard to make even a small motion, let alone walk straight.

The man stepped down the gangway. His foot caught slightly on the final edge. Not a bad slip, just enough to make him pause for a moment. He caught himself with one hand pressed flat against the cold rock wall of the dock and stayed there for a moment.

"Oh fer fuck's sake," the conductor muttered. He strode toward the figure, his patience gone. " What's the bleedin' hold-up? I said move! Yer not the only one on this dock, are ya? Other people got places to be. I got a queue behind ya, so if ya could just—"

The figure straightened up slowly.

It was not a sudden or showy motion. He simply rose to his full height, turned his head, and looked at the conductor from deep inside the shadow of his hood.

The conductor stopped talking mid-sentence.

He was not a man who scared easily. Eleven years on this route and more of his years in other unsavory businesses had shown him every kind of desperation and threat. He had been yelled at, threatened with violence numerous times, and once even faced a knife to his throat. He had even looked into the eyes of a man later wanted in four countries for crimes he preferred not to know about.

None of those encounters hit him quite like this.

It was not anything obvious about the eyes. They were just eyes, shadowed and unreadable. What struck him was the total lack of fear. No fake toughness, no aggressive posture, no attempt to seem dangerous. Just a quiet, steady gaze that felt like it came from somewhere far outside the conductor's normal world. Calm, patient, completely unbothered, and yet, dangerous.

The conductor found his words had dried up.

The figure held that look for a few long seconds before he turned away without a sound and continued along the dock toward the road at the top of the embankment. The darkness grew thicker up there, with streetlamps few and far between.

The conductor stayed rooted in place and watched him go.

He did not shout after him. He did not tell him to hurry. He said nothing at all until the cloaked man had reached the top and melted into the shadows beyond the nearest light.

Only then did the conductor turn back to his boat. He noticed the rest of the passengers had already cleared the gangway on their own. They stood further down the dock, quiet and watchful.

He did not ask why.

Something about that figure lingered in the air even after he had vanished. The conductor shook it off and got back to work, but the uneasy feeling stayed with him for the rest of the night. Whoever that man was, he carried trouble in a way that needed no words.
