I walk back to the altar and run my fingers over the cool, smooth stone. The circular depression in the center is about the size of my palm, and the runes around the edge are still glowing with a soft, pulsing light.
I try to press on the runes, in various orders, hoping to trigger some kind of reaction. But nothing happens. The stone remains inert, the runes continue to pulse in their steady, rhythmic beat. They don't even give back any feedback when I press them.
"I don't think it's a code." I say, stepping back from the altar. "There's no reaction to anything I do."
"Maybe you just got it wrong." Lucas suggests. He's standing next to me, his brow furrowed in thought. "Try it again."
"I don't think so." I shake my head. "If it were just a wrong code, there'd be some indication of failure. Nothing happens at all when I touch it. Like it's not even registering."
