???'s POV
Sitting on my chair in this dorm room here in the Nagoya University campus, I was crossing out the names of the departed on the freshly printed death notices to be burned in the campus bonfire this coming evening and I would attend the nightly street festival in downtown Nagoya. I am Chikamasa Kazekami, a death creature as an Ikigami messenger. I literally had dark blue hair and black eyes. My body looked like a 25-year-old one. In this dor room, burned incense sticks permeated the small yet cozy unit. Behind it was a portrait of a young student with blonde hair and black eyes. It was one of my final victims, a 20-year-old, Japanese-American college student named Wesley Kazekami.Wesley died because of the death notice 24 hours after I had given it to him.
I still remembered how I sobbed hard while clutching on his dead body at the campus courtyard, and the cries were so loud the ground beneath the campus shook. In honor of Wesley after cremating his remains, I took his last name and became Chikamasa Kazekami, a college student of literature in Nagoya University and lived in this dorm room during the weekdays.
Back to this, I was in righteous fury-mode as I crossed out the names of the deceased with a red marker and wrote the Japanese words for Nobody beside it. "You scoundrel Kal-sama…" I hissed coldly, "...you made us take out lives of the young innocent just for your little Ikigami sector. Now, it is unrecognizable to you while you forever burn in the Abyss."
Once I finished crossing out 1 stack of 20 death notices, I got up and went downstairs to the evening bonfire in the courtyard. My fellow death creatures as Ikigami Messengers like myself were currently burning their freshly printed, crossed-out death notices and nano-capsules into the bonfire as our ritual every few nights or so. Some were chanting names of the deceased to the night sky. The lights in the courtyard were Christmas lights and traditional Japanese lanterns.
Seeing the bonfire, I tossed my stack of crossed-out death notices into the blazing fire.
I watched the paper curl and burn to oblivion.
We could feel the presence of the spirits of our victims.
Wesley was among them.
"Hey there, y'all!" he chirped with his Western university jacket in white and blue and a baseball cap in red and black.
"Yes, good evening," I replied.
"How's your day?"
"Um…it's fine. I finished my assigned reading on a book by Murakami, and I submitted my essay for Chapters 3-4. I got 90 points for that."
"Wow, awesome, man. Thanks."
"Yes, it's my honor to do that for you."
After that, we went to the night festival via a streetcar together as a death creature and his spirit companion.
