Chapter 16 - InterferencePart II – The Break

When his eyes opened again—

he moved.

Not fast.

Not rushed.

Just… right on time.

One step forward.

Then another.

The distance closed.

The child turned slightly—

too late to understand what was happening.

The bicycle was almost on him now.

"Hey—watch out!"

Someone shouted from a distance.

Too far.

Too late.

Dhalik reached out—

not toward the bike—

but toward the child.

A quick push.

Not hard.

Just enough.

The child stumbled sideways, losing balance and falling onto the ground.

At the same moment—

the bicycle rushed past—

missing him by inches.

The rider panicked.

Pulled too hard on one side.

The wheel twisted.

And—

he went down.

Metal scraped against the road.

A sharp thud followed.

Then everything stopped for a second.

"…Yo!"

"…What just happened?!"

"…Are you okay?!"

Voices filled the street again.

People moved closer.

The child sat on the ground, confused, looking around.

No blood.

No injury.

Just shock.

"I—I almost—"

He didn't finish the sentence.

An older man rushed over and helped him up.

"You're fine. You're fine," he said quickly, checking him over.

Nearby, the rider groaned, holding his arm.

"Ahh… damn…"

Two people went to help him.

"Easy, easy—don't move too fast."

Dhalik stood where he was.

Watching.

Not the people.

The result.

The position of everything.

Where they ended up.

How it changed.

"…It worked," he said quietly.

But this time—

it didn't feel the same.

Because something came after that thought.

A small pause.

"…I changed it."

That stayed with him.

Before, he just saw things.

Now—

he did something.

And that meant—

he could do it again.

A man turned toward him.

"You—hey, you pushed the kid, right?"

Dhalik looked at him.

"…Yeah."

No excuse.

No extra words.

The man looked at the child.

Then at the fallen bike.

Then back at Dhalik.

"…You saved him."

Dhalik didn't answer.

Because he wasn't thinking about that.

He was thinking about something else.

What if he was a second too early?

Or too late?

What if the push made it worse?

His hand lowered slowly.

That feeling again—

not fear—

but something close.

Uncertainty.

Across the street—

Msemo pushed himself off the wall and walked over.

Not rushing.

Not drawing attention.

Just… joining.

"You alright?" he asked the group.

"Yeah, yeah—kid's fine," someone answered.

"Just scared."

Msemo nodded, then glanced briefly at the rider.

"You?"

"I'll live," the man said with a small wince.

"Bike took the worst of it."

A few people laughed lightly.

The tension eased.

Msemo's eyes shifted.

To Dhalik.

Just for a moment.

No smile.

No reaction.

But something passed between them.

He saw it.

The choice.

"You did good," Msemo said quietly as he stepped closer.

Dhalik looked at him.

"…I wasn't sure."

"Good," Msemo replied.

That made Dhalik pause.

"…Good?"

Msemo nodded slightly.

"If you're always sure, that's when you make mistakes."

That sat with him.

Because it made sense.

"…I could've made it worse," Dhalik said.

Msemo looked at the street.

Then back at him.

"But you didn't."

A short pause.

"…That doesn't mean next time will be the same."

Dhalik nodded slowly.

He understood that.

More than he wanted to.

The crowd started to thin out.

People went back to what they were doing.

The moment passed.

But something about it didn't.

Dhalik turned his head slightly.

Looking past the street.

Further down.

Something caught his attention.

A man.

Standing near the corner.

Not moving.

Not reacting like the others.

Just… watching.

For a second—

their eyes almost met.

Then—

the man turned and walked away.

Like nothing happened.

Dhalik frowned slightly.

"…That's weird."

Msemo noticed the shift immediately.

"What is?"

Dhalik kept looking in that direction.

"…He didn't react."

Msemo followed his gaze.

But the man was already gone.

"Who?"

"…Someone over there," Dhalik said.

"He was just standing… watching."

Msemo's expression changed slightly.

Not much.

But enough.

"And?"

Dhalik hesitated.

"…Nothing."

But that wasn't true.

Because something about it didn't fit.

Everyone else reacted.

Moved.

Spoke.

That man didn't.

Not even a little.

Like he already knew what would happen.

Dhalik's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…That doesn't make sense."

Msemo didn't respond right away.

Because it did make sense.

Just not in a way he liked.

"…Let's head back," he said calmly.

Dhalik nodded.

But as they walked—

he looked back one more time.

The street was normal again.

Nothing out of place.

Nothing strange.

And yet—

that feeling stayed.

Because for the first time—

it wasn't just about what he could see.

It was about someone else—

who might be seeing it too.

To be continued…
