Chapter 188 - Phase III Begins

Rovan won—but not in the way he wanted.

The faint smile he had carried at the start of the match was gone, replaced by a somber quietness as his gaze lingered on where his opponent had fallen. For a brief moment, he said nothing, as if weighing something only he could see.

The applause came anyway—loud and unwavering, rolling across the stadium in waves. It was the kind of victory most would have been satisfied with.

Rovan barely acknowledged it.

"I'll continue." he said, his voice calm but firm as it carried across the arena.

A ripple passed through the crowd, louder this time, edged with excitement and disbelief. Many had expected a substitution after that exchange—not an immediate continuation.

From the Iron Ward side, the response came without delay. Another student stepped forward, their expression steady as they entered the field, showing no hesitation despite what they had just witnessed.

The distance between them closed quickly, the tension resetting in an instant.

And just like that, the next duel began.

◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆

Far from the arena floor, the atmosphere inside Star Shine Academy's waiting room was markedly different. The roar of the stadium reached them only as a distant echo, muffled by thick walls, leaving behind a quieter, more contained tension.

A large screen displayed the ongoing match, its shifting light reflecting across the room as the gathered students watched in silence.

Alex stood among the selected participants for the Knight Division, his posture still, his gaze drifting from the screen to the others around him. These were the people he would be fighting alongside—yet this was the first time they had truly seen each other like this.

They were doing the same.

It wasn't hostility, nor was it welcome—just quiet assessment. Each of them measured the others without a word, forming judgments in the silence.

Alex didn't miss the occasional glance directed his way.

He was the only first-year present, and the difference was impossible to ignore. The other four were second- and third-years—seasoned, familiar with this stage.

And then there was him.

The contrast didn't need to be spoken aloud.

Among them, one presence stood out more than the rest.

The only female in the group sat on the far side, her posture composed and upright, her attention fixed on the screen—though it was clear she was aware of everything happening around her.

Kira Reyes.

Deputy Head of Discipline.

Leader of the Sword Club.

And more importantly—Vice-Principal Irene's student.

There was a quiet authority to her, the kind that didn't need to be asserted. She didn't speak or move unnecessarily, yet her presence alone subtly defined the space around her.

After a moment, her gaze shifted and met Alex's.

There was no dismissal in it, but no warmth either—only a measured assessment that lingered just long enough to make its intent clear.

Alex held her gaze without hesitation, his expression steady as he met it head-on.

For a brief moment, neither of them looked away.

Then Kira spoke.

"So you're the junior Miss Irene mentioned." she said, her voice calm, carrying just enough weight to draw the room's attention. "The one she claims is strong enough to participate with us."

A faint pause followed, her gaze still fixed on him, steady and unflinching. "If she says that, then I'll acknowledge it as well."

The words were simple, but the effect was immediate.

The others shifted slightly, the earlier tension easing as a few exchanged glances. One of the senior students let out a quiet breath.

"Well, that settles it," he said, a hint of amusement in his tone. "If the club head acknowledges you, we don't have any issues."

"Yeah," another added with a small nod. "No complaints from us."

It wasn't warmth, but it wasn't resistance either. More than acceptance, it was alignment—an unspoken understanding that Kira's judgment was enough.

It wasn't surprising. Kira Reyes wasn't just another senior student. Within the Knight Division, her name carried weight. Some respected her, others feared her.

And quite a few followed her.

"Boss" they called her—half in jest, half in truth. Not because she demanded it, but because she naturally took control of any space she stood in. Her presence alone organized people, directing them without the need to raise her voice.

She was, after all, one of the strongest Knight students in the academy.

Under normal circumstances, that position of leadership in this tournament wouldn't have fallen to her. Gareth—the strongest third-year Knight, one known for even defeating mages—would have taken that role.

But he had turned nineteen just last month.

Which meant he was out.

Alex glanced at her again, studying her posture, the way she carried herself without effort. 'So she's the one leading us…'

On the other side, Kira was doing the same. Her expression remained composed, but there was a faint shift in her eyes—subtle, but present.

Miss Irene's words weren't something she took lightly. If her teacher had said this first-year was strong, then there had to be a reason.

Still—'Stronger than me? Let's see if that's true.'

Because this junior wasn't just anyone. Too many things about him didn't add up. Recovering from mana stenosis alone was rare—and awakening a talent for magic after that?

The thought lingered, and the question remained—it wasn't going away anytime soon.

◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆

Back on the arena floor, the match between Crimson Bastion Academy and Iron Ward Academy had already reached its conclusion.

Crimson Bastion stood victorious with four members still on their feet. The outcome had been decisive enough that the earlier excitement had begun to settle into a quieter anticipation among the spectators.

The next match followed soon after.

Ashford Institute vs. Greyfield School.

Compared to the opening match, this one was far more balanced. Both sides traded momentum without hesitation, their exchanges sharper, faster—neither willing to let the match drag on.

In the end, Ashford Institute secured the final victory with just two surviving members. It wasn't overwhelming—but it was enough.

With that, two spots in the semifinals were claimed: Crimson Bastion Academy and Ashford Institute.

Finally, it was Star Shine Academy's turn.

Their opponent: Dawnspire Academy—the all-girls academy known not only for their beauty, but also for their excellence in auxiliary arts and battlefield support. Even so, they were far from weak.

On the Star Shine side, Elena stood near the front, her gaze sweeping across the group before settling on one of the male students.

After a brief pause, she spoke.

"You'll go first."

The student straightened slightly, a confident smile forming as he stepped forward. "Understood. I'll secure the first win."

It wasn't arrogance.

Just certainty.

A few of the others nodded, offering brief words of support. Kira remained silent, her eyes following him for a moment before shifting back toward the screen.

The chosen student didn't linger. With a final nod, he turned and made his way toward the stage, the distant roar of the crowd growing louder with each step.

On the arena floor, the gates opened.

From Star Shine Academy's side, the first contestant stepped forward. Across from him, Dawnspire's representative had already taken her position.

They met at the center.

"I'm Joshua Conway. Star Shine Academy." He introduced, his voice clear as it carried across the field.

The girl opposite him gave a small nod. "Maria Kelly. Dawnspire Academy."

Their introductions ended.

The signal sounded.

And the match began.

Among Star Shine Academy's Knight roster, Joshua stood among the best—alongside Gareth, Kira, and the other selected participants.

From the very first exchange, it was clear why.

His movements were sharp and agile, each strike flowing cleanly into the next with ease. Within minutes, it was over.

The final clash rang out, and his opponent was forced back beyond the perimeter. The barrier flared briefly, confirming the result.

"Winner—Star Shine Academy!"

A wave of cheers followed, but Joshua barely reacted. He turned his head slightly, his gaze finding Elena at the edge of the field.

She gave a small nod.

"I'll continue." he said, his voice steady as he reset his stance.

The second opponent from Dawnspire entered soon after, her posture more guarded, her steps more cautious. The shift was immediate—but it didn't change the outcome.

Joshua claimed another victory.

When he finally stepped down, the others offered brief congratulations.

"Good start."

"Good job, Joshua."

Even Irene gave him a small nod of approval.

The momentum continued.

The next two knights were sent in one after the other, each stepping onto the stage with their own approach. The first managed to secure a single win before being forced out, his match ending quickly against a more aggressive opponent.

The second followed with a stronger showing.

He held his ground longer, pushing the fight into a drawn-out exchange that drew steady reactions from the crowd. For a moment, it seemed like he might turn it around.

But in the final clash, his footing faltered—tipping him just enough to send him out of bounds.

Elena's gaze shifted once more, this time settling on Kira. "Kira, you go next." There was no hesitation.

Kira stepped forward without a word, her movements calm, almost effortless as she made her way toward the stage.

Alex watched her go before speaking. "You're not sending me?"

Elena paused, glancing back at him, a faint smile touching her lips.

"It wouldn't be fair," she said, her tone light but deliberate. "If you took all the spotlight."

On the field, Kira's presence was immediate.

The duel began—and ended just as quickly.

Her first opponent barely managed to hold their ground before being overwhelmed. Her strikes were clean and decisive, leaving no room for recovery. There was no wasted effort, no drawn-out exchange—just complete control from start to finish.

The second followed.

And the result remained the same.

Kira dismantled her opponent's defense piece by piece before ending the match in a single, decisive exchange.

Silence lingered for a fraction of a second.

Then the crowd erupted.

"Star Shine Academy—victorious!"

And just like that, Star Shine Academy advanced with the other two academies.
