Chapter 4 - Chapter 3—The Seven Wonders

The Grand Witch Elara stood before the two princesses in the Hall of Celestial Convergence. Unlike the previous trials, there was no celebration today. No music filled the chamber. No gods or goddesses gathered to praise their accomplishments.

Only silence.

Seraphina stood beside her younger sister, Ariella, both dressed in their finest celestial robes. They had passed their trials and proven their talents, but the look in Elara's eyes told them that the hardest part of their journey had yet to begin.

Elara slowly approached them. "You have both completed your trials."

Seraphina lowered her head respectfully. Ariella did the same, though she couldn't hide the curiosity in her eyes.

"But passing your trials does not mean you are ready to leave Celestia."

Ariella raised an eyebrow. "Then what else do we have to do?"

Elara looked at her. "Prove that your gifts have value beyond this realm."

Ariella's expression became serious.

Elara lifted her hand. A faint golden light appeared in the centre of the hall. Within it, seven tiny stars began to circle one another. "These are the Seven Wonders."

Seraphina stared at the floating lights.

"They are not merely magical treasures," Elara continued. "They are manifestations of knowledge, creativity and power. Each one has been hidden somewhere beyond the borders of Celestia."

Ariella took a step forward. "So we have to find them?"

"Yes."

"How many?"

"Seven."

Ariella's eyes widened. "That sounds like a very long journey."

"It will be." The Grand Witch's expression hardened. "And it may be your last."

The sisters exchanged a glance. Seraphina's heart tightened. "What do you mean?"

Elara looked directly at them. "If you fail to retrieve the seven items and return to Celestia, you will not be permitted to come home."

Ariella's playful expression vanished. "You mean..."

"You will be permanently expelled from this realm."

Silence descended over the chamber. For the first time, the reality of their journey settled heavily upon them. Celestia was not simply their birthplace. It was their home. Their family. Their entire world. To be expelled from it forever was a fate neither princess had ever considered.

Seraphina clenched her hands. "We will not fail."

Elara looked at her for a moment before turning towards her. "Princess Seraphina, daughter of Celestia. Your gift lies in the art of embroidery, but your talent is more than the ability to create beautiful patterns. You have the power to weave celestial energy into every thread."

Seven stars separated from the golden light and floated towards Seraphina. They transformed into seven tiny spools of shimmering silver thread. "The Seven Shimmering Spools."

Seraphina stared at them in wonder.

"Each spool contains a different form of celestial magic. They have been scattered across the human realm, hidden in places where ordinary people would never think to look."

She slowly reached towards the glowing spools, but they vanished before she could touch them. "Where are they?"

"That is for you to discover."

Seraphina frowned. "Do you know where they are?"

"I know where they have been hidden."

"Then why not tell me?"

A faint smile touched Elara's lips. "Because this is your quest, not mine."

Seraphina sighed. Of course. The Grand Witch never made anything easy.

Elara turned towards Ariella. "Princess Ariella, your gift is equally extraordinary. Through culinary arts, you can transform ordinary ingredients into vessels of healing and magic."

Seven golden lights appeared. They slowly transformed into seven mysterious ingredients. Ariella leaned forward. "What are they?"

"The Seven Sacred Ingredients." One resembled a crystal-like fruit. Another looked like a flower made from blue flame. A third appeared to be a small silver leaf. The remaining four were too strange to identify. "These ingredients possess extraordinary properties," Elara continued. "Some can heal the body. Others can calm the mind. Some may even restore magic that has been lost."

Ariella's eyes sparkled. "So I have to find seven magical ingredients."

"Yes."

"Can I taste them?"

Seraphina turned towards her. "Ariella."

"What? I need to know what I'm working with."

"You are not eating unknown magical ingredients."

Ariella crossed her arms. "You're no fun."

Seraphina rolled her eyes.

Elara watched the sisters with an amused expression before her face became serious again. "You will not be travelling together."

The sisters immediately looked at her.

"What?" Seraphina asked.

"You must each follow your own path."

Ariella's expression fell. "But why?"

"Because your talents will lead you to different places." Elara turned towards the enormous doors of the hall. "Beyond Celestia lies the human kingdom of Aetheria. It stretches across vast lands, from the eastern mountains to the western highlands. Your destinies will take you in opposite directions."

Seraphina looked towards the distant horizon beyond the crystal windows. "The east?"

"Mount Luminar." Elara's gaze returned to her. "The mountain is ancient. Its forests are filled with celestial energy, and spirits older than many of the gods dwell among its peaks. If you wish to strengthen your connection with celestial threads, that is where you must go."

Seraphina nodded slowly. "And Ariella?"

"The west." Elara looked towards Ariella. "Mount Verdura."

Ariella's eyes lit up. "Verdura?"

"It is a mountain of fertile valleys, enchanted forests and rare magical plants. Many of the ingredients you seek may be found there."

Ariella smiled. "Then I suppose I know where I'm going."

Seraphina looked at her sister. "And we will be separated."

Ariella's smile faded. Neither sister had expected that part. They had always been together. Even when their personalities clashed, they had never truly been apart. Seraphina was the disciplined elder sister. Ariella was the mischievous younger one. They argued. They teased each other. They occasionally drove each other insane. But when either of them needed help, the other was always there. Now they would have to live on opposite sides of Aetheria.

Elara seemed to understand what they were thinking. "You are sisters. Distance will not change that."

Ariella looked at Seraphina. "Promise me something."

Seraphina smiled. "What?"

"Don't become too serious while I'm gone."

Seraphina laughed softly. "I could say the same to you."

"I am always serious."

"You tried to cook dragon stew during your trial."

"It wasn't a real dragon."

"You said that it probably wasn't."

Ariella grinned. Seraphina shook her head. Despite everything, the tension in her chest eased. They would be separated. But they would not be alone. Elara handed each princess a small crystal mirror. "These will allow you to communicate with one another across great distances."

Ariella immediately examined hers. "So we can talk whenever we want?"

"Within reason."

"What does that mean?"

"Do not disturb your sister while she is sleeping."

Ariella glanced at Seraphina. "I make no promises."

Seraphina sighed. "I knew this was a mistake."

Elara smiled. "Perhaps." Then her expression became solemn. "Remember this. The Seven Wonders are not simply objects to collect. Each one will test you. Some will test your skill. Others will test your courage, your judgment and your heart."

The sisters listened carefully. "And there may come a time when the path ahead forces you to choose between what you desire and what you believe is right."

Seraphina frowned. "What kind of choice?"

Elara's eyes darkened. "One you will understand when the time comes."

Ariella glanced at her sister. That answer did not make either of them feel better.

Elara stepped aside. The great doors of the hall opened. Beyond them stretched the celestial road leading away from Celestia.

For the first time, Seraphina could see the world beyond their home. It was vast. Unknown. Beautiful. And frightening. She took a deep breath. "Then this is goodbye."

"For now," Ariella corrected.

Seraphina smiled. "For now."

They embraced. It was not a long embrace. Neither sister wanted to make the moment more emotional than it needed to be. But both knew that once they stepped through those doors, their lives would never be the same again.

Seraphina turned towards the eastern road. Ariella turned towards the west. They walked together for a short distance. Then the road divided. Seraphina stopped. Ariella stopped beside her. They looked at each other one last time.

"Come back safely," Seraphina said.

"You too."

"And don't eat anything suspicious."

Ariella smiled. "No promises."

Seraphina laughed.

Then they went their separate ways. Neither sister looked back. If they had, they might have noticed Elara standing at the entrance to Celestia, watching them disappear into the distance. Her expression was no longer one of pride. It was worry. Because there was something she had not told them. The Seven Wonders had not been hidden randomly. They had been scattered for a reason. And the moment the princesses began searching for them, something else would begin searching for them too.

***

Seraphina travelled east for several days before the landscape began to change. The celestial glow of Celestia slowly faded behind her, replaced by the warm sunlight of the human realm. She eventually reached the kingdom of Aetheria.

The kingdom was vast, stretching from the eastern mountains to the western highlands. Mount Luminar dominated the eastern horizon. Its snow-capped peak pierced the clouds, while thick forests covered its slopes. Strange lights could occasionally be seen moving among the trees at night.

Seraphina stared at the mountain. "This is where I'm supposed to live?" She wasn't sure whether she was excited or terrified. Perhaps both. She began her ascent. The higher she climbed, the stronger the celestial energy became. Her threads began to glow. Seraphina stopped. She pulled one from her collection and watched as it shimmered between her fingers.

The mountain was responding to her. For the first time, she understood why Elara had sent her here. Mount Luminar was not simply a place to find the Seven Shimmering Spools. It was a place where her own power could grow.

Eventually, Seraphina found a secluded area high on the mountain. A small clearing surrounded by ancient trees. A waterfall flowed nearby, its water sparkling beneath the sunlight. She decided this would be her home. She began building a small sanctuary where she could live and work.

Days became weeks. Weeks became months. Slowly, the people of Aetheria began to hear stories about the mysterious princess living on Mount Luminar. They came seeking embroidered garments blessed with celestial magic. Some claimed Seraphina's creations brought good fortune. Others said her threads could protect travellers from evil spirits. Seraphina never confirmed either claim. She simply continued working. And somewhere within the mountain, something was waiting for her.

***

Far away in the west, Ariella was making her way towards Mount Verdura. The journey was very different from Seraphina's. Where Mount Luminar was cold and mysterious, Verdura was warm and alive. Lush forests covered its slopes, filled with colourful flowers, strange herbs and fruits that glowed beneath the moonlight. Ariella's eyes widened when she saw them.

"Oh, this place is dangerous." She grinned. "I love it."

Mount Verdura quickly became her new home. She established a small kitchen near a clear river, surrounded by herbs and fruit trees. Before long, the scent of her cooking began attracting travellers from nearby villages.

People came seeking meals that could restore their strength. Others came simply because they had heard rumours about the mysterious celestial chef living on the mountain. Ariella welcomed them all. But she soon discovered that Verdura was not as peaceful as it appeared. Some of the plants were protected by magical creatures. Some ingredients could only be harvested during certain phases of the moon. Others were hidden in places where ordinary humans could never reach.

Ariella quickly realised that finding the Seven Sacred Ingredients would not be as easy as picking herbs from a garden. She would have to earn them. She would have to understand the mountain. And she would have to prove that she deserved what it was hiding.

***

Months passed. The sisters rarely saw one another, but their magical mirrors kept them connected. Sometimes they spoke for hours. Sometimes they argued. Sometimes they simply exchanged a few words before returning to their work.

"How many Sacred Ingredients have you found?" Seraphina asked one evening.

"None."

Seraphina raised an eyebrow. "None?"

"I've been busy."

"Doing what?"

"Cooking."

"You've been sent on a quest."

"I know."

"And you haven't found a single ingredient?"

Ariella smiled. "I found something better."

"What?"

"A mushroom."

Seraphina stared at her through the magical mirror. "A mushroom?"

"It can sing."

Seraphina sighed. "You're hopeless."

Ariella laughed. But beneath their playful conversations, both sisters were changing. They were learning. Growing stronger. And slowly discovering that the human realm was far larger and stranger than they had ever imagined. Neither of them knew where the Seven Wonders would lead them. Neither knew what dangers awaited them. And neither knew that their journey would eventually bring them face-to-face with people who would change their lives forever.

For now, they had only one certainty. They had to find the seven magical treasures. Because if they failed… Celestia would no longer be their home.
