Chapter 851 - Chapter 77

In the heart of a mid-sized town, a long line of chained human citizens shuffled along the cobblestone streets. They tottered under the weight of massive wooden crates, their muscles straining and breaths ragged. It was an agonizing struggle, but it was a burden they endured without complaint—for to collapse meant death at the hands of the demon guards watching their every move.

Today, the guard presence was unusually suffocating. Perched high atop the roof of one of the largest stone buildings left standing after the invasion, a young girl sat kicking her feet over the ledge.

Or at least, she appeared to be a young girl. She had short black hair, vibrant pink eyes, and wore an intricate, frilly black dress that looked far more suited for a porcelain doll than a living person. But as the enslaved townspeople had come to learn through horrific experience, this deceptively innocent child was Demon Lord Vorrathys—the monster who had single-handedly laid waste to their defenses and forced their absolute surrender within hours of the initial invasion.

She let out a long, theatrical yawn, resting her chin in her hands as she peered down at the laboring captives. "By Michael, this is sooo boring," she whined. "It's working exactly the way I wanted it to, and that's what makes it boring."

"Is that not something to be pleased with, Lady Vorrathys?" a smooth voice chimed in from behind her.

Vorrathys offered a lazy glance over her shoulder. Approaching her across the rooftop was a high demon whose physical traits resembled a goat—sweeping, curled horns and thick fur along his legs—paired with the torso and face of a man, save for his eyes, which were solid, pupil-less white voids. His heavy robes rustled softly against the stone as he walked.

"Lazarus," she acknowledged him, turning her gaze back to the town below. "From your perspective, sure, it looks pleasing. But to me? It's mind-numbing. A perfectly oiled machine sucks all the fun out of problem-solving."

The demon gave a respectful nod. "I understand your perspective, Lady Vorrathys. However... there are problems."

Vorrathys turned her head back toward him, raising a single dark eyebrow. "Oh? Where exactly?"

Lazarus swept a clawed hand out toward the bustling, miserable town. "While we have crafted a perfect engine here—forcing the populace to work in conditions poor enough to generate a steady stream of suffering to fuel our portals, yet manageable enough to keep them alive and keep us well-supplied—the other Demon Lords are not demonstrating such discipline."

He shifted his white-eyed gaze toward the distant horizon beyond the city walls. "They are likely wringing out as much suffering as humanly possible, as quickly as possible, with absolutely no long-term planning whatsoever."

"And what does that have to do with me?" Vorrathys asked, waving a hand impatiently to encourage him to get to the point.

"What I am trying to say, Lady Vorrathys, is that while you have made this town operate perfectly, the others have failed to do the same with theirs," Lazarus explained, turning his pupil-less white gaze back to her. "Someone needs to go to their territories and show them how to run a proper domain—just as efficiently as you run yours."

Vorrathys quieted, processing his words. As the idea settled in her mind, a mischievous, sharp smile slowly spread across her face.

"Yeah... yeah, you're right," she said, standing up and smoothing down her frilly black dress. "Someone does need to show those other Demon Lords how to run a town. And there's no reason why that someone shouldn't be me."

Lazarus bowed his head slightly. "Precisely what I meant, Lady Vorrathys."

Vorrathys rubbed her hands together in glee. "Think you can keep this place running smoothly while I go whip the others into shape?"

"Without fail, my lady," the demon replied with a simple, confident nod.

Vorrathys let out an excited snicker. In a violent burst of motion, a pair of dark, draconic wings erupted from her back, catching the wind with a heavy crack. She launched herself off the ledge, shooting up into the sky at blinding speed. With a sharp turn in midair, she rocketed toward the horizon, eager to go harass her fellow Demon Lords and force their domains into peak efficiency along the way.
