Chapter 15 - Bonus: [ Noticing Things ]

"This is great." Amy muttered under her breath while gripping the bars of the cell where they were locked in.

"And it's all your fault!" She spat, looking at everyone else, hands on her hips.

The four blinked in unison.

Sonic was leaning against the wall.

Sticks was fighting cockroaches.

Tails was shooing away the cockroaches.

Knuckles was reporting where the cockroaches were.

Sonica was standing by the other wall, away from others. Her forehead was pressed against the wall, as if in Time Out.

// I want to go home. //

"Do any of the even care?!" Amy cried.

She shook Sonic by the shoulders, "I can't live without my hammer! It's a part of me!"

Tears were pricking at the corners of her eyes.

Should I... do something?

I don't know how to comfort people.

Then they reached towards her.

Sonic gently placed his hands on Amy's shoulders, "Amy, calm down. We'll get your hammer back."

Amy looked at him, her expression still upset, "But what if we don't?!"

"We will." His voice was surprisingly... reassuring.

Tails nodded, "Yeah. We'll figure something out."

Knuckles raised a hand. "And if that doesn't work, we can always punch the wall."

"That's not helping, Knuckles."

"Oh... Then we can punch the ground!"

Sticks crouched beside Amy. "Don't worry! I have lost things before too."

Amy sniffled, "Really?"

"Yeah. Usually because I bury them so nobody can steal them."

"That's...not reassuring, but thank you."

I watched them quietly.

They actually knew how to comfort someone.

I looked back at the wall.

The only ones who ever comforted me were Veronica, Professor and... him.

'Everything will be fine.' that's what I always told myself.

I glanced back at Amy.

She was still upset, but at least she wasn't alone. She had so many people who cared about her.

People who would notice when she was upset. People who would stay beside her until she felt better.

Sonic seemed the most concerned.

He kept talking to her, trying to get her to calm down, even when she snapped at him.

He didn't get annoyed, which was odd. He just stayed there.

He really cared about her.

How lucky of her.

But luck was something that always slapped me across the face.

I glanced over at them again.

Amy, still surrounded by everyone, was complaining through her tears while Sonic tried to calm her down.

She had people.

I had... me.

And honestly, I was fine with that, no?

Less attachment.

Less pain.

And, more importantly...

Less chance of me hurting someone again.

That's what I keep telling myself.

I lowered my gaze with a silent sigh.

Yeah. It was better this way. For everyone.

I glanced towards him again.

He was still trying to cheer Amy up, giving that stupid thumbs up and casualy comforting comments.

For some reason, it annoyed me.

I quickly looked away. Tsk.

Why was I even affected?

I chose to be this way.

I can't be a hypocrite now.

I don't need anyone to cheer me up.

I don't need your little comforting gestures.

I am fine!

I pressed my back against the wall and stayed there, crossing my arms.

๐—ฆ๐—ข๐—ก๐—œ๐—–'๐˜€ ๐—ฃ๐—ข๐—ฉ

Amy was really upset.

I couldn't exactly blame her. That hammer meant a lot to her.

"Amy, calm down. We'll get your hammer back."

"But what if we don't?!"

"We will."

I gave her shoulders a reassuring squeeze.

Tails joined in, trying to come up with a plan, while Knuckles and Sticks... well, they were trying.

It was enough to get Amy to calm down a little.

But then I noticed something.

Sonica.

She was standing against the opposite wall, arms crossed, staring at the floor.

How edgy.

Guess I can't expect anything from her.

"What are you sulking for?" I blurted out..

She didn't move but I noticed her ears perked up.

Heh. She looks caught off guard.

"I'm not sulking." She replied flatly.

"Uh-huh." I walked over and leaned against the wall beside her.

"You've been standing there all gloomy since we got thrown in here. I mean, you're always gloomy. But still~"

"..."

"Cat got your tongue. Again?"

She shot me an annoyed look, "Leave me alone. Focus on Amy and her hammer."

I blinked. "Wow. Harsh."

Focus on Amy?

That tone says otherwise.

I leaned closer and lowered my voice to a whisper, "Hold on, are you annoyed because we are trying to comfort her?"

Wait, too close. I pulled away, making distance.

She frowned and glanced at Amy then at me, whispering, "Of course not. You're delusional."

She looked away again.

"Right... ๐˜ am delusional." I muttered and glanced at the others.

Amy was barking at the guards who had no idea she was giving death threats.

Tails was trying to figure out a way out.

Sticks was suspiciously staring at a cockroach and Knuckles was... giving the cockroach a name.

Then I stole one more glance at Sonica then leaned against the wall beside her.

"You know you look pitiful, acting all sulky and lonely. We are right here."

She didn't say anything.

How very 'Sonica' of her.

She's too stubborn.

---

I sighed and walked back toward the others.

"Anyway," I said, turning back to Amy, "we're getting your hammer back. No matter what."

Amy gave a small nod, "Thanks, Sonic."

I nodded back, "Anytime."

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Sonica glance at us.

For a second, our eyes met.

She immediately looked away.

What's really going on with you, Sonica?
