Chapter 5 - [ Old Memories #3 ]

"The results say it was worth it, Prof. Her body isn't naturally biologic. This hedgehog was created in a lab!"

Professor silently cussed underneath his breath, his eyes closed. Then he carried me to a comfortable place.

"Prof, why aren't you saying anything?" Dr. Ray chuckled. "This is great, isn't it?! We should call the Press. The Scientists. The Government."

Professor turned to face him after putting me safely on the mattress. "Shut up! We are not telling anyone!"

"You are always so dense! Come on, we can be famous! This girl even has elemental powers and super speed. And she isn't even fully biological! This is a great discovery!"

"NO! THAT WON'T BE SAFE FOR HER!"

"Oh, don't tell me you have already got attached to her so much."

"Ray, think properly- She is just a kid-"

"And she can make me famous, rich, one of the greatest scientists in the world!"

"NO!"

"WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?!"

"Veronica, take Sonica and leave! Quick!"

"W-What's going on?!" She quickly ran towards my unconscious body, but then Ray aimed a gun at her, his eyes didn't look very human..

"Don't you dare, you brat-"

"RAY! PUT THAT DOWN!"

"NO! PROFESSOR, WHY DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND?! SHE CAN CHANGE OUR LIVES. MY LIFE! IT MATTERS TO ME! Ever since you came in my life, my position has gotten even lower and lower all because of you! Everyone knows me as your sidekick! Your co-worker! Your assistant, blah blah blah! Just because you got that opportunity back then, not me! But now, that can change! Everyone will regret treating me lowly! Thanks to your adopted daughter and her powers, I can get and do what I want! Even if the government ignores it, I can use her powers and gain superiority in this world! I will have the upper hand in everything!"

"RAY, YOU ARE INSANE!" Professor yelled back while grabbing Ray's arms from behind. "VER, TAKE HER AWAY, QUICK!"

"Oh, no, you don't-" Ray punched Professor's face and, without hesitation, shot Veronica right in her head.

She froze.

"NO!!" Professor's eyes widened in horror as he pushed Ray away, running towards his daughter whose body collapsed on the cold tiles. "VERONICAA!! NO! V-Ver.."

The cold tiles were now painted red from her blood.

"You still have time, Vince. Think. We could both climb the golden ladder or.. I will have to end you too if you be an obstacle." Ray walked close enough to aim the gun's muzzle to the back of Professor's head.

Professor, still holding Veronica's lifeless body, looked at my unconscious body on the mattress then back at his own daughter. His body shaking, especially his shoulders. ".. enough, Ray.. enough.."

"..so you are just asking for me to kill you?" His expression hardened as he kept his finger on the trigger.

"..no.. take her away.."

A satisfied smirk formed on Ray's lips as he pulled his gun back. "That's the wisest decision you have ever made." He started to walk towards me.

But just when Ray was about to lift me up, Professor.. stabbed his back from behind with a drill machine.

Ray groaned in pain as he jerked forward and dropped the gun. "Vince!"

Professor immediately stepped back before attacking him once more. "YOU ALREADY RUINED ME! I WON'T LET YOU RUIN ANYONE ELSE!"

Ray gritted his teeth as he delivered a solid punch on Professor's face. "SHUT UP! YOU IDIOT!" He hastily looked for his gun that was on the floor in the dark side.

Professor quickly took the opportunity and poured acid on Ray's back.

"AGHH!! STOP!!" Ray's body arched in pain as he felt the burning sensation on his back that was slowly melting away the fabrics too. He reached for whatever he could find and then swinged a metal wrench right at Professor's head, causing him to stumble and feel a wave of dizziness. But Ray wasn't done. He grabbed a screw driver and stabbed it on Professor's shoulder multiple times while Professor groaned in pain and used all his strength to push Ray away.

When Ray stumbled back, Professor quickly carried Veronica and me to the exit and shut the door while Ray just started to chase. "Vince!!"

A look of horror, worry, panic and anger was mixed on his expression as he roughly pressed a few buttons on the lock-pad beside the door and at last punched it.

"LET ME OUT, VINCE! THIS ISN'T OVER!!" Ray banged the metal door from inside.

Professor immediately picked me and Veronica over his shoulders and stepped back as the robot-voice said :

"𝚂𝙴𝙻𝙵 𝙳𝙴𝚂𝚃𝚁𝚄𝙲𝚃 𝙰𝙲𝚃𝙸𝚅𝙰𝚃𝙸𝙽𝙶 . . .𝙸𝙽 5. . .4. . ."

"NO! NO! STOP IT!!" Ray banged the door, now sounding desperate and scared. "VINCE!!"

"3. . ."

"2 . . ."

"NO!!!"

Professor bit his quivering lip as he ran straight to the main exit, stumbling on the way.

"1. . ."

"𝚜𝙴𝚕𝚏 𝚍𝙴𝚜𝚝𝚁𝚄-𝚞𝚌𝚝𝙸𝚗𝙶-"

Even the robot's voice glitched as the entire laboratory began to collapse like a landslide.

Professor jumped out right a second before the laboratory exploded into pieces, and he held us in his arms like a shield, breathing heavily. His entire body was shaking and blood dripping down his head.

The last thing I remember is hearing the ambulance's siren while the laboratory was burning behind us in a huge fire.

Now you might be wondering.. 'How did I know all this happened if I was unconscious?'

How?

Painfully.

The day I woke up in the hospital, the doctor said that Professor had already lost a lot of blood from his head and... he couldn't make it.

And my Veronica... She was long gone.

Their bodies had already been cremated by their relatives from afar. And that left just me...

They blamed me and I did too.

I was a "bad luck"

A "Misfortune "

"Better off alone."

I ran to the crematory that day, tears streaming down my face.

Professor and Nic, they were gone because of me.

They lost everything because of me.

Why was I still alive?

"I am sorry.. I am so sorry.." I cried beside their gravestones, for hours.

"I am sorry..."

After that day, I had been living alone, hiding my powers from everyone. The only funny thing is that... my fur turned blue that day and it still is.

I also made one friend by the way, but... I am happy he is away from me. Safe and sound.

And as time passed, my powers grew more. It was hard to control them, so I don't use them at all.

Every time my powers activate, something bad happens. It's scary.

Especially on my birthdays since it brought painful memories. It's as if... my birthday triggers my powers, making it more hyperactive. Or was it a part of growing?

I soon discovered that I had the powers to control four different elements: Fire, Water, Lightning and Earth. They developed in me with every strong emotional outbreak.

So I supress them.

Don't use them at all.

These inhibitor rings that Professor gave me have helped wonders. After all, they are also the last memories.

And now, I was worried the cycle would repeat again.

They seem too nice, too kind, too friendly.

The type of people who would do anything for friendship and that's what I don't want!

I couldn't let them find out about my powers.

Their hate for me would indeed be better than them losing their lives because of me.

I just wish I could rewind time. I wouldn't have followed Veronica home. I wouldn't have become a part of their happy family. They wouldn't have to lose their precious lives...

Veronica would have surely become a well-known successful photographer, Professor's inventions would have been the world's new wonder.

But, no. I had to ruin it all.

And now I pray. That no one will try to save me again.

Since Sonic seems to have the super speed, does he have other powers too?

He said he had to save the village, is he a hero?

Is he able to control his powers with ease?

Did he...

Did he go through this hell?

I hope the answer is no.

No one deserves that, but...

I am selfish for hoping to meet at least one person who suffered the same as me.
