Chapter 9 - Chapter 8: The Six-Month Reprieve and the Iron Demon

The tension that had threatened to tear the Oda clan apart at Bansho-ji Temple did not vanish; it simply curdled into a cold, watchful silence. In the three months following the funeral, Nagoya Castle underwent a quiet but radical transformation.

Thanks to the tactical delay Subaru had engineered, the Hayashi faction had frozen their plans. They were paralyzed by a sudden, deep-seated fear that Nobunaga's "madness" was merely a calculated mask. Subaru capitalized on this paralysis with the efficiency of a seasoned grand strategy gamer. Working late into the nights under the protective political shield of Hirate Masahide, Subaru began balancing the clan's messy ledger. He optimized rice distribution, opened secret trade negotiations with merchants from Sakai, and helped Nobunaga quietly fund the expansion of his matchlock musket corps.

In the eyes of the system, the numbers were shifting:

[TACTICAL UPDATE: THE THREE-MONTH PROGRESSION]

[ODA CLAN STABILITY: 52% (Rising)]

[NOBUNAGA'S MUSKET CORPS: 150 Units -> 380 Units]

[SUBARU RYU: REPUTATION UPGRADE -> 'The Shadow Strategist']

But while Nobunaga's momentum grew in the north, a dark, festering resentment was reaching its boiling point in the southern domain of Suemori Castle.

Inside the inner sanctum of Suemori, the air was thick with frustration.

Oda Nobuyuki sat upon a raised dais, his elegant face contorted with anger. He slammed his silk fan against his knee, looking down at Hayashi Hidesada, who was kneeling on the tatami mats before him.

Oda Nobuyuki (Age: 15)

LEAD: 60 | INT: 68 | POL: 72

Current Mood: Humiliated, Impatient, Resentful.

"Three months, Hidesada! We have waited three months!" Nobuyuki shouted, his voice cracking with youthful rage. "You promised me that after the funeral, the elders would abandon my brother. Instead, they whisper that he is a hidden genius! They say his sacrilege at the altar was a grand declaration of war against the Imagawa! Every day we delay, more minor lords swear their loyalty to Nagoya!"

Hidesada pressed his forehead against the floor, sweat dripping from his brow. "Forgive me, Lord Nobuyuki. The rumors spread too fast. That vagrant, Subaru Ryu... his explanation at the temple completely turned the tide of public opinion. If we had ordered the hidden troops to strike then, the surrounding provinces would have branded us as opportunistic traitors who murdered a grieving heir."

"Then we kill the vagrant first!" Nobuyuki hissed, his eyes narrowing into venomous slits. "He is the spine keeping my brother upright. Without him, Nobunaga is just a wild dog."

"A direct assassination within Nagoya is currently impossible, My Lord," Hidesada muttered. "Masahide's guards are watching him day and night. We need a more decisive blow. We need to mobilize our full military strength."

"And who, pray tell, will lead that strength?" a booming, thunderous voice interrupted from the back of the darkened room.

The heavy sliding doors crashed open, and a massive silhouette stepped into the light. The sheer physical presence of the man seemed to cause the candle flames to dance wildly. He was heavily armored in dark, battle-worn iron plate, a massive nodachi (long sword) strapped to his back. His face was a map of scars, dominated by a thick, fierce beard and eyes that burned with the cold intensity of a predator.

Subaru's system overlay, had he been in the room, would have exploded in warning numbers at the sight of this absolute juggernaut:

Shibata Katsuie (Age: 29)

LEAD: 87 | ATK: 96 | DEF: 92 | INT: 50 | POL: 40

Current Status: Commander of the Suemori Forces / "The Iron Demon"

Current Mood: Fierce, Disgusted by Politics.

Loyalty to Nobuyuki: High (For Now)

Shibata Katsuie—the legendary warrior whose raw combat prowess was feared across the capital—marched into the room, ignoring all courtly etiquette. He stopped right in front of Nobuyuki's dais and crossed his massive, armored arms.

"You speak of assassinations and shadow games like common cowards," Katsuie growled, his deep voice rattling the wooden beams. "I am a samurai of the Oda. If we are to take the head of the Fool of Owari, we do it on the field of honor, not through poison and back-alley stabbings."

Nobuyuki swallowed hard, intimidated by his own commander's aura. "Lord Shibata... do you believe my brother is unfit to rule?"

"Your brother is an erratic boy who plays with peasants and foreign toys," Katsuie said bluntly, his 50 INT seeing the world in simple, black-and-white terms of martial strength. "Tradition dictates that the lord of a clan must be a pillar of stability and power. You, Lord Nobuyuki, respect the old ways. You respect the samurai code. Therefore, my blade is yours. But I am growing tired of Hidesada's endless delays."

Katsuie stepped closer, leaning his massive frame over Hidesada. "I have spent these past three months training five hundred elite cavalrymen in the southern plains. They are ready to bleed. I do not care about this 'Subaru Ryu' or his clever tongue. Words do not stop a spear. Strategy means nothing when my horses trample their line."

Hidesada looked up, a sinister, calculating grin slowly returning to his face. "Then you are ready to march, Lord Shibata?"

"The harvest is ending," Katsuie declared, slamming his fist against his breastplate, a metallic thud that signaled the coming of war. "The roads will be dry in a few weeks. Tell the Kiyosu branches to prepare. We will march under the banner of the true heir, Nobuyuki. Let Nobunaga bring his thundersticks and his strange advisor. I will show them that the blood of a true warrior cannot be defeated by a beggar's bedtime stories."

As Katsuie turned and marched out to ready his troops, Nobuyuki finally smiled, his confidence restored. The delayed rebellion was finally taking shape, backed by the strongest vanguard in the entire province.

Back in Nagoya Castle, Subaru suddenly felt a cold shiver run down his spine. He was sitting at his desk, studying a hand-drawn map of the Owari lowlands.

Suddenly, his system interface flashed with a violent, flickering crimson warning light, the text cutting across his screen like a fresh wound:

[SYSTEM ALERT: ENEMY FACTION MOBILIZATION ACTIVATED] [TARGET IDENTIFIED: SHIBATA KATSUIE (The Iron Demon)]

[TACTICAL ASSESSMENT: High Threat Level. Enemy Vanguard strength exceeds your current front-line defense capabilities.]

[QUEST UPDATED: Prepare for the Battle of Inō.]

Subaru stared at the name Shibata Katsuie on the blue screen. He knew this historical battle was coming, but seeing the raw data of Katsuie's terrifying physical and leadership stats made reality hit harder than any video game ever could. The six-month peace was officially over. The Iron Demon was coming, and Subaru had to find a way to break him.
