Chapter 70 - Chapter 69

The first blade reached me before the sound of the shattering did.

I did not dodge. A wall of ice rose from the crystal floor and caught the volley, and the blades broke against it. But every shard that fell reflected my face, and every reflection kept smiling.

Fold him, the voice said.

The sky creased like paper. The ground tilted ninety degrees, and for a moment I was standing on a wall that had been a floor a breath earlier. A thousand mirror-Sonus stepped out of the shards, each one holding a different weapon: a flame sword, a void spear, a bow of pure frost.

"Impressive," I murmured. "A copy of me, made from my own reflection."

They charged together.

I did not fight them one by one. I closed my eyes and spread my divine scan outward, and the illusion fell apart in my mind. Nine hundred and ninety-nine of the figures had no mana, no heartbeat, only light. One of them had a core, hidden at the very center of the swarm.

I opened my eyes and stepped sideways through space.

I appeared behind the real one. It was not a copy of me at all. It was a tall figure of folded crystal, shaped like a man, with a single golden eye where its face should be.

"There you are."

My palm struck its chest, and the ice I poured into it did not break it. It folded around my power instead, swallowing it into a pocket of twisted space.

The figure laughed, and it sounded like glass sliding over glass. Your magic is a river. Mine is the riverbed.

It raised one hand, and the whole canyon began to close around me like a fist.

The Guardian's Truth

This was not a beast. It was not even a monster.

It was the portal's will, a spatial entity older than the Drake and older than the canyon, and it was furious that something had left its domain.

I felt the fox cub tremble inside my seal. Through the connection, I caught a thin thread of thought.

Mother?

I froze.

The golden eye narrowed. The child bears my law. She was not yours to take.

"She was alone and bleeding," I said, "and your Drake was killing her."

The Drake was testing her. Every heir of the rift must survive the folding before the law will wake in her blood. The walls stopped closing. You cut the trial short. Now she lives, but half-formed.

I looked down at my hand. It had gone very still.

I had interfered with a rite I did not understand. That was my mistake, and I could admit it.

"Then tell me what I owe," I said.

The guardian said nothing for a long time. Then it asked something I did not expect.

Will you shelter her until the law matures? Not as a servant. As a ward.

I thought of the plains inside my seal, the Gladehart's meadow, and the World Tree Sapling's roots already reaching toward the silver valley.

"Shelter, yes. Chains, no. When she is ready to choose, she may stay or she may return. I will not stop her."

The golden eye closed, then opened again.

Then the portal's door will open for you when she calls. Keep her safe, thief.

"My name is Sonu," I said.

The figure dissolved into drifting light. The mirrors fell back to the ground as ordinary crystal, and the sky stopped folding. In the silence, a single shard rolled to my feet. Inside it, small and bright, lay a spiral of silver light, a key.

I picked it up.

(Ding: Spatial Key (Rift Heir Bond) acquired. Effect: allows entry to the Crystal Canyon portal's deep layer at any time while the Void Fox lives. The Tamer Seal's inner realm has grown once more.)

What the Seal Became

I did not wait to return to the camp. I sat down on the cold crystal and slipped into the seal.

The silver valley had grown. It was no longer a small valley. The night sky above it now held a slow moon and a thousand drifting motes of light, and the ground was soft with pale grass that glowed when the fox walked across it. The cub was asleep at the foot of the sapling, her three tails wrapped around its trunk, and the sapling's leaves had curled gently over her like a blanket.

Inside the seal, the zones had begun to connect. Roots from the sapling reached under the meadow, the plains and the valley, drawing them into one network. Mana circulated through all of it in a slow loop.

It is becoming a planet, I thought.

And a planet needs a core, a guardian, and a people.

A thin chime sounded in my mind. It was not from the system. It came from the Blood Mark on my shoulder blade, warm and insistent, the link to my family.

Hubby. Angel's voice was soft, and I could hear her smiling. Are you busy?

"Always," I said. "What is it?"

Luna and Lake came to me this morning. They talked it over, and they decided together. She paused. They want a son, Sonu. Luna's family in the elf realm has no heir, and Lake's sea clan has been asking for years.

I let out a slow breath. I had given them the choice, and I had meant it. Even so, hearing it made the idea real.

"Do they understand what it means? A boy would not carry the Blood Mark the way the girls do."

We talked about it. Luna says the mark will adapt. The inner world's core planet is nearly ready. A pause. They also said they will not decide anything until you come home, because they want you there.

I looked at the sleeping fox, and the sapling, and the growing night sky inside my seal.

"Tell them I will come soon," I said. "There is one more portal I have to clear first."

Be careful, she said. You always say that, and then something enormous tries to eat you.

"Only sometimes," I said, and I closed the link.

When I opened my eyes, the violet sky of the portal was already fading. The canyon had gone quiet, and the key warmed my palm.

Tomorrow I would return to camp and collect my points. After that, the real hunt would begin.
