"It worked out for the best. Sweetie never gets used to the old family home. As soon as it gets dark, she cries nonstop. Otherwise, I really wouldn't have known how to find an excuse to come back."
"You didn't want to invite Melody. You really wanted to invite Ian, didn't you?"
"What's wrong with that? Sweetie is so picky. She only warms up like that when she sees Ian. Isn't it good for her to have a big brother figure?"
"Warms up? Our Sweetie is a girl. She needs to be more reserved!"
"I'm a girl, too. Maybe I should be a little more reserved."
Shawn Fisher was at a loss for words. He reached out and wrapped his arm around Candy. "You should understand how I feel. You're Sweetie's mother, too. If she gets married one day, won't you be sad and heartbroken?"
His voice softened noticeably. Shawn Fisher was known for his bad temper, but when it came to Candy, he was as gentle as could be.
