Chapter 272 - Chapter 272 - Dragons and a Banquet.

[Chapter Size: 2800 Words.]

Third Person POV.

Winterfell.

...

...

"Gods... I'm a little nervous," Daenerys murmured, as she sat on the horse, with both legs turned to the same side in front of Daemon, who held her while he guided the horse toward the dragons.

Barristan Selmy, riding behind them, and Ghost were the only ones to follow the two. Arya wanted to come, but Daemon didn't allow it, as it was dangerous for her.

Daemon wanted to bond the black dragon to his wife immediately and took advantage of a bit of sunlight; she was clearly nervous as she saw the three enormous dragons standing there, already waiting for them, as they drew closer and closer.

"Don't worry. Winter already knows you, and the other two won't hurt you while I'm here, they will certainly recognize your blood."

"Do you think he will like me?" she asked like a silly girl, referring to the black dragon.

"Only an idiot dragon wouldn't like to have a rider like you," Daemon laughed, while Daenerys huffed at the joke.

When the horse grew nervous and refused to move forward, Daemon dismounted first. Then he took Daenerys by the waist and legs, lifting her off the horse with ease and setting her carefully on the ground.

Daemon looked at Ghost behind them.

"You should stay here too, alright?"

The wolf nodded and remained at a distance. Barristan also dismounted, but did not advance, staying there with the two horses and the direwolf.

Daemon took Daenerys's hand and approached the dragons. The three watched them with curiosity, but none posed a threat to her — even so, she couldn't help but feel nervous.

Daemon let out a small laugh, amused by his wife's situation, until he received a light elbow from her.

"Don't laugh at me," she demanded.

"Of course, my queen," he replied.

They had spent the last two hours together, talking about how things were, even dismissing Lucis after Daemon had started handing out several letters from the people of King's Landing to everyone.

Lucis was still learning to read, having difficulties, but in her months she already had the ability to understand a letter from her brother.

In the last six months in Winterfell, she and Daenerys had been taking lessons together with Rickon and Shireen. Daenerys had even received lessons in the common tongue from Illyrio, but she didn't have much knowledge of Westeros, its houses, names, and banners.

There was nothing to be ashamed of. Daemon himself had difficulties learning in Skyrim. Only after leaving the orphanage and finding a mentor did he begin to learn to read and write the languages of that world.

He was lucky that his former master had hired tutors, which helped a lot in his journey, especially when he began studying the arcane arts and needed to go to the College of Winterhold, becoming an archmage in Alteration and Conjuration.

Daemon and Daenerys ended up catching each other up. Bran couldn't simply relay everything that happened with Daemon, just as Daemon couldn't see everything through Ghost since Daenerys was beyond the surface and he couldn't stay with her all the time.

After some time talking and even sharing a moment of affection, they finally decided to deal with the dragons, already near the end of the afternoon.

And now, there near sunset, Winter was the first to approach. She might not have Daenerys as her rider, but she knew her, and she was the only one she willingly allowed on her back. Every time Daemon rode her with Val, he had to reward her with heavy food, which Winter liked.

She didn't like Val being on her back... As if the blonde would never be worthy, or rather, didn't have the necessary blood...

"Hello, Winter. You are as graceful as ever," Daenerys said to the female dragon, who merely let out a lightly icy breath.

Even though there was still no snow, Daenerys was well protected, as the temperature was dropping with the approach of winter. The grass itself was already very thin, and soon the landscape would completely change. It was normal for everyone to already be wearing thick coats.

She followed Daemon to Viridrax, while the green dragon stared at Daenerys, practically sensing the blood in her.

"This is my life partner," Daemon said in High Valyrian.

The dragon stared at her and sniffed her belly. "And this is our hatchling," Daemon added.

"Daemon!" Daenerys exclaimed, giving him a light slap. "You reduced the prince and heir of the Seven Kingdoms to a... hatchling?" she joked.

"But isn't he?" he replied, while she merely rolled her eyes. He called his son a hatchling, but from the dragons' point of view, it made perfect sense.

Daenerys was a little enchanted as she felt the warmth of the dragon's skin when touching it with the palm of her hand. Viridrax didn't pull back or become aggressive — he simply accepted the contact and closed his eyes.

"He liked you," Daemon said. "If he didn't have a rider, he would certainly have already recognized you as his."

"Really...?" She opened a confident smile.

"If the black dragon responds the same way, he will bond with you. And it seems he is taking the initiative," Daemon said with satisfaction, as the sounds of that heavy body moving drew closer.

Seeing the movement of the black dragon, Daenerys reached for Daemon's hand, squeezing it with some fear, while the black dragon approached, even making Winter roar angrily at him as she shifted a bit after being pushed aside.

"It's alright. He has no ill intentions," Daemon said, watching the dragon with a certain amusement.

The dragon had already been subdued in the South and obeyed Daemon's orders, even without being his rider. So it wouldn't be difficult for Daenerys to tame him, especially with Daemon there. If it were another Targaryen or Blackfyre, the dragon probably wouldn't accept them, unless Daemon authorized it, since the dragon had been defeated by him...

Daenerys hesitated for a moment, but kept her hand in Daemon's and took a step forward. The dragon stopped and began to sniff her as it reached right in front of her. Unlike Winter's cold breath, his breath was warm, which was even pleasant to her.

"Go ahead," Daemon encouraged her.

She raised her hand and touched the dragon's snout, beginning to gently stroke it.

The dragon took a moment, but soon closed its eyes.

"You did it," Daemon said, satisfied.

"Is it really that simple?" she asked, intrigued.

"Did you know I didn't even need to get close to Viridrax to already command him?" Daemon shrugged.

"Come on, you know what I'm talking about. It's still recent," Daenerys insisted.

Daemon nodded, understanding her doubts. "I won't say you can already command the black dragon, but he accepted your bond. Now you just need to strengthen it. I can leave him here in the North so you can spend more time with him every day," Daemon said, and she understood.

"And no flying, at least not until our baby is born."

She nodded. She wouldn't do something so reckless. She knew how volatile the movement in the sky atop a dragon was, and a nearly seven-month belly could endanger both the boy and the mother.

Their child, in a way, was already "dragon's blood" and had flown with Winter, since they had done that nearly two moons ago.

Daenerys spent some time with the black dragon, taking the opportunity to circle around his head while stroking him, touching his black scales.

"I now need to think of a name for you. I don't have one yet, alright?" she murmured, while Daemon passed the time between Viridrax and Winter.

Daemon simply watched and saw the sun setting. "Let's go back, it's getting late." He said.

"I have to go! I'll come back tomorrow with a name!" she said in High Valyrian to the black dragon, who seemed to respond with a breath.

"How will you feed them?" she asked as she approached her husband.

"I spoke with the maester, there's a man selling some cows. We'll give them to them tonight and tomorrow when the sun rises..." Daemon replied, as he waited for her to return to him.

They returned to where Barristan Selmy was still waiting, along with the horses and Ghost.

Then they headed to Winterfell, where a banquet would take place.

Some time later, the hall soon filled up as everyone talked. Daemon became the target of questions about the letters they had received.

"So it's true that father commanded a cavalry of thirty thousand men? Even Lord Robb was with him?" Shireen asked immediately at the high table, curious, as Daemon sat in the main chair beside his wife.

"It's true." Daemon said.

"But he didn't write any of that in the letter!" Shireen insisted.

"Shireen, stop bothering His Majesty," her mother's voice came with a stern tone, making the girl shrink back.

"There's nothing to worry about," Daemon said with a small smile. "Your father doesn't like to boast much, but Robb is quite different."

He looked at Rickon, remembering the letter the boy had received. At least one of them was from Robb, and he talked about his maneuver within the cavalry, which simply cut through the enemy formation in front of the camp, giving no chance for a reaction. He told Shireen, who now knew what her father had done in the war.

They had no idea of the ability Daemon had unleashed. On the battlefield, everyone had only heard that roar and had their capabilities enhanced — they became faster and stronger.

But Daemon let them bask in the glory. There was no need to say that everything was because of him. He let his men enjoy it.

"Your Majesty, a raven has arrived from the Glovers," said a man, approaching with a letter.

Daemon quickly opened it and read.

"Something important?" Daenerys asked.

"Nothing much. Just fear that a dragon has appeared and they want answers," Daemon replied, returning to his meal. Perhaps they thought it could be Euron Greyjoy's dragon, since by now the entire North must already know what happened in Oldtown.

"That reminds me you still haven't said much about the dragon that went to the Wall," she commented.

They had spoken briefly. Daenerys reported the roar from the previous night and also what Bran had seen — that the dragon was now standing to the north, atop the Wall.

Daemon wasn't very pleased. Through the raven, Daemon had seen what Odahviing had done, but he had ended up letting Euron escape.

He would have the chance to complain to him tomorrow, when he went to the Wall.

Even so, he was intrigued. Euron Greyjoy — that bastard — intended to bring down the Wall. He was together with the White Walkers, which was quite unexpected. And Odahviing had let him escape beyond the Wall.

Daemon only hoped that man wouldn't cause more problems than he already had. He had no idea that Euron could still use necromantic magic. Since when he saw the ten thousand bodies burned by Odahviing, he noticed that half of them, even while burned, were necrotic bodies.

Since they had been dead for a long time and some were missing limbs, the fire wouldn't have done that. He would investigate, but it was obvious that necromancy had been used. He would also ask his dragon directly.

"About Odahviing, I intend to see this at the Wall tomorrow," Daemon said, turning his attention back to Daenerys. "He is a dragon from that world, different from the ones you know, very different..." Daemon explained.

"It must be incredible to speak with dragons that also speak our language," Daenerys said, with a certain curiosity.

Daemon scoffed. "The ability to speak is not that impressive when you know the other aspects of a dovah dragon, Dany. Don't confuse them with the dragons here, Dany. Dovah dragons are extremely arrogant. They only respect me because I also have a dovah soul. Otherwise, they would be as arrogant with me as with anyone else."

"Is he really that powerful?" she asked, surprised.

"He is not as large as the dragons here, but he can use magic and is far more intelligent than most maesters. You can see that he is only two-thirds the size of our dragons, yet that dragon could simply kill them easily — even if all three fought him..." Daemon explained.

Daenerys was quite surprised by that. "Two-thirds the size, and still that dangerous..."

The problem was precisely the magic. Daemon already knew that. He didn't directly see what happened when the dovah dragon encountered Euron, but from the state of the place, it was evident that the dragon had simply destroyed the army in a single move — and still deliberately let Euron escape.

That dragon liked to play with his prey. He liked to see his enemies terrified, and for that reason he kept them alive.

He was an arrogant dragon... and almost a psychopath.

Not that Daemon was very different at times. After all, he had already taken several houses and made a point of leaving the lords alive, just so they could feel the weight of knowing that Daemon had stolen their coffers. He did this with Hoster Tully, who died knowing he had lost a large portion of his house's gold.

Daemon continued talking, eating and drinking wine, interacting with everyone. Not only with Daenerys, but also with Arya, who filled the room with questions, especially after reading Robb's letter, in which he boasted about what happened in King's Landing.

Daemon then raised his goblet and lightly tapped it with a utensil, drawing everyone's attention in the hall.

"Well... it's time to tell our little tale of glory in the South," he said, in a humble tone.

His voice captivated the hall, and everyone looked at him. Before being a king in this world, he was a bard known throughout Skyrim. Despite his title as a hero, Dragonborn, he also mastered the art of singing in public, and in the taverns he passed through during his adventures, everyone had the pleasure of hearing his ballads and stories.

He himself had already stirred that hall the first time he entered, back when King Robert was in the middle of a banquet. At that time, Daemon had entered that place as a simple bard — and captivated everyone to the point that he had to flee from the king's annoying pursuit.

He could be excellent at commanding and dealing with wars, while at the same time hating politics, but he also knew how to win over an audience with his pleasant voice.

"Let me tell all of you the summary of our war," Daemon began.

He spoke about the campaign in the South, dealing with the Freys, reinforcing his forces in Seagard, marching to Riverrun, while at the same time riding dragons and advancing to the Iron Islands, where he joined the army of the North that had arrived by ship. He executed Baelon Greyjoy.

Afterward, he took Riverrun, returned to Winterfell to deal with the problem of the Essos mercenaries, and went back south, dividing his army — one part marching directly to Harrenhal, while another invaded the Westerlands, both by land and by sea, with ships departing from the Iron Islands toward Lannisport.

As they had conquered several lands along the way, not even Casterly Rock, a fortress considered impenetrable, could withstand Daemon's strength.

They reached King's Landing, he captured Jaime Lannister, attacked the city after breaking its walls, advanced and conquered the capital. He executed most of the Lannisters, while the last remaining ones were about to arrive at Eastwatch to serve in the Night's Watch.

Then came the confrontation with the Blackfyre, which ended in a decisive victory. Around three hundred thousand soldiers took part in a single conflict that ended in just one day — something almost unbelievable.

The rest of the night continued with whispers and conversations. Many wondered how Daemon had used his mystical arts, since he did not give many details. He only presented a summary of the victories and events.

In any case, he celebrated the rest of the night and then went to his chambers with his pregnant wife. Even Lucis respected that moment and left them alone, despite also being his lover — Daemon would have to pamper her the next morning.

Daemon was satisfied. He could finally rest a little after so many conflicts.

Now, practically the entire realm was on its knees before him, with the exception of the Vale.

First, he would deal with these smaller problems, with the loose ends. After that, his attention would turn to how the lords of the Vale would respond to his next letters.
