The icy defense Elizabeth had built up all day melted away instantly. Tears welled up in her eyes and spilled down her cheeks—a mixture of lingering frustration, relief, and deep affection.
"I hate you," she sobbed softly, wiping her tears with the back of her hand as she stepped closer to him. "I thought you completely forgot my birthday. I didn't even go home to my family's house this weekend because I was hoping... I was hoping I'd get to see you."
Lorenzo quickly set the cake down on a nearby side table and pulled her tightly into his arms. He buried his face in her hair, inhaling the sweet, familiar scent of floral perfume.
"I'm so sorry I upset you, Liz," he whispered into her hair, holding her close. "I really had to work today, but I would never forget your birthday. I could never forget you. Here... open your present."
