Chapter 32 - Occult Recor, CH.32: new tenant.

( Arata's POV )

I didn't have a problem with the little critter, but if Sun was uncomfortable, it was better if he found a new home.

I approached Chisaki and the cat must have understood what I was going to do because it jumped out of Chisaki's arms, I watched the cat as it jumped into a stack of boxes and then into a hole in the ceiling.

I followed the animal, even though those crates wobbled a bit when I climbed on them.

Chisaki: Be careful.

Arata: no worries, yo estaré bien.

As I approached the hole where the little beast had escaped, I saw that it was a loose part covering the ceiling. I slid it aside and was able to put my head and shoulders in there.

What lay on the other side of that hole was a dark crawl space just big enough for a grown man to fit in, The place was very dark but I could see the cat's eyes shining in the darkness and at one point the eyes began to multiply.

We had an infestation inside our walls.

Among those eyes appeared some that were larger than normal, but I didn't have time to think about that when all the cats jumped on my head and I slipped off my unstable steps, hitting my back hard.

A shower of cats fell upon me; the girls just observed the strange event. Sun had even climbed onto a wooden box to get away from the cats.

The rain of beasts wasn't the strangest thing, although, just as I was about to stand up, something else jumped out of the crawling space, the owner of the big eyes I had seen before turned out to be a girl who pinned me to the ground.

That girl had green hair, yellow eyes, and cat ears and a tail; clearly she wasn't a normal girl, and that was proven when she started sniffing me, after smelling me, the girl opened her mouth and licked my cheek.

I was somewhat perplexed by the girl's actions, but she maintained a neutral expression, she then jumped away from me, and a wooden sword fly with great force where she had been before.

Ranna was responsible for that; she and the others who were downstairs heard the commotion and came up to the second floor, and Ranna didn't like seeing a stranger on top of me.

Sagiri helped me up, and I questioned her about our mysterious invader.

Arata: Hey Sagiri, is that girl a yokai, a nekomata, or whatever they're called?

Sagiri: No, she's human.

Arata: What's up with those ears then?

Sagiri: I think she's the host of a powerful spirit.

Ranna: Get out of here, stay away from Arata.

Ranna wasn't interested in what we were talking about and demanded that the cat girl leave the building.

The girl responded with equal aggression, assuming the fighting stance of a stray cat.

???: You all go away, I was here first.

Urara: Hey, that's not how things work, this place legally belongs to us.

I used one hand to lower Ranna's hand, and after giving me a quick glance, she calmed down, and the mysterious girl did the same.

Arata: Let's talk this over, okay? My name is Arata, what's yours?

???: ... Yaya.

Arata: Yaya, what were you doing on our walls? Don't you have anywhere else to go?

Yaya: Not somewhere where all my friends can be together.

Arata: friends, you mean all these strays.

The cats that were around the room seemed to take care of themselves; they weren't domesticated, and they did seem very intelligent.

Even so, they couldn't stay here, but there's no reason we couldn't reach an agreement.

Arata: Then why don't you stay with us?

Yaya: Are you going to let me stay?

Arata: Not here, but at our house.

Sun: Arata, what are you saying?

Arata: We have many rooms available and the surroundings of the house will be very comfortable for your friends. You can live with us for free, but I do have some conditions.

Yaya: ...What are those?

Arata: Make sure your friends don't bother Sun, and you'll have to join us and help our family.

Yaya: um family, I don't understand?

Arata: Basically, we're a group that deals with undesirables in the city, evil spirits, thugs, and misguided youth, you can help us in any way you choose, and there's no pressure to start immediately unless an emergency arises, of course.

Yaya tilted her head to one side and while she was considering my offer, the girls gathered in a circle around me.

Sun: Arata, are you sure about this?

Arata: Sorry, Sun, are cats really such a big deal?

Sun: Not that, we don't know anything about that girl.

Sagiri: Given what we know, we should be selective about who we let get close to us.

I took another look at the cat girl, and nothing about her screamed deceitful.

Yuuki: I think she's a good girl. Sagiri's right to be careful, but we don't have time to dig up someone's whole history.

Ranna: No more licking.

Arata: Yeah, I don't think that'll happen again, but I'll give her a warning.

Yaya: ...Okay, I'll go with you.

Yaya broke up our meeting when she gave her answer, and it seemed like we were all on the same page here.

Arata: great, I think that's enough cleaning for today, let's all go home.

I think after what happened we all needed a break so I told the girls we'd go back home, and nobody objected.

The walk home was quieter and more awkward than usual, but I'm sure Yaya will grow fond of the girls soon.

Upon entering our house, Sun and Chisaki went to take care of dinner, and I took Yaya to where the rooms were, Yaya didn't say much, but she didn't seem unhappy with these arrangements.

Arata: You can choose any empty room.

Yaya: Um, thank you.

Arata: I forgot to mention it before, but welcome to the family Yaya, dinner will be ready in half an hour.

The girl gave me another look and then went into her new room, I went down to the kitchen to help the girls, but I suddenly turned around when I felt the hairs on my neck stand up.

I looked around but there was nothing in the hallways, that was worrying but if we were in danger Sagiri and Urara would have been the first to detect it.

I shrugged and continued going to the kitchen.
