As soon as she finished shouting, the sound outside the door disappeared. Fiona pressed her ear to the door, holding her breath to listen, and saw no movement outside.
She thought the man had left, so she gently pulled open the door, just opening a small gap and poking her head out.
Indeed, there was no figure outside the door, just a book lying quietly on the carpet at the doorstep. Fiona frowned, opened the door and bent over to pick up the book.
"Weren't you saying you didn't want it?" She had just stood up when she heard the man's voice again.
