Gerffron could feel the eyes.
Not all eyes — the ballroom had three hundred people in it and most of them were occupied with their own conversations and their own social navigation and their own version of the evening. But a specific subset of the eyes, in a specific quarter of the room, had the quality of eyes that had been directed at him and had not moved.
He tried to identify the source.

The ballroom's light was the winter ball light — the full chandelier deployment, the specific, warm quality of a formal space given everything it had, which was excellent for the occasion and slightly less excellent for identifying the precise origin point of a directional gaze across three hundred people.
He stopped trying.

The delegation had arranged themselves near the east wall with the specific, comfortable ease of people who had been at this court for two months and had developed, through that tenure, a working relationship with the space.
Pellin was in his deep blue, managed and precise, with the specific quality of a man who had something on his mind for tomorrow and was conducting today with the focused professionalism of someone who had decided that today's function was today's function.
Sorra was beside him, in the Veldrathi formal attire's female register — the same deep blue, the different cut, the specific quality of a woman who wore formal clothes with the complete comfort of someone who had never had occasion to find them intimidating.
The other delegation members had distributed themselves through the room with the practiced ease of diplomats at a foreign occasion — present, engaged, visible, performing the function of delegates at a winter ball, which was to be good guests.
Gerffron moved among them.
He moved with the specific, warm competence that eight weeks of this role had produced — the greetings, the introductions where they were needed, the facilitation of conversations between the delegation members and Zenos court nobles that would produce the specific kind of warmth that a formal diplomatic session could not produce but that a shared social occasion sometimes did.
He was good at this.
He had not expected to be good at it.
He had been good at it from the beginning, which was the specific quality of someone who was good at people rather than good at performance.
"Consort Wadee," said a voice.
He turned.
Princess Caelith was there.
She was in the Veldrathi court's formal evening register — the specific, deep jewel tones of a crown princess at a foreign court's significant occasion, the combination of quality and restraint that communicated exactly the right degree of regard.
She was also, he noted with the specific, slightly wary attention he brought to Caelith in certain situations, wearing the expression she wore when she was planning something.
"Your Highness," he greeted.
"Consort Wadee," she said again, warmly. "You have done excellent work this evening. The delegation is — the atmosphere is really something. You have managed it beautifully."
"The delegation manages itself well," he said. "My contribution is—"
"Don't," she said, with the fond, direct quality of someone who had been watching him understate himself for two months and had decided to stop allowing it. "Accept the compliment. You have earned it."
He looked at her.
He said: "Thank you."
"There," she said. "Excellent." She tilted her head. "You know, you have a quality that I find very — the court responds to you differently now than it did two months ago. I have been watching. The room has a different relationship with you than it had at the beginning of the delegation."
"The assignment has been—"
"It is not the assignment," she said. "It is you. The assignment is the context. You are the content."
He looked at her with the slightly startled quality of someone who had received a piece of information that required a moment.
She looked at him with the warm, slightly mischievous quality of someone who had more to say and was deciding whether to say it.
She said it.
She leaned forward — not dramatically, only the specific, deliberate lean of someone moving from the formal register into a closer one — and adjusted the lapel of his coat.
The adjustment was unnecessary.
The lapel was fine.

She leaned back.
She said, pleasantly, at the volume of someone contributing to a conversation: "There. That was bothering me."

He looked at the specific section of the room from which he had been unable to locate the eyes that had been watching him.
Gorgina was there.
She was across the room — thirty feet and a ballroom's worth of people between them — and she was looking at him with the specific, cold quality of a look that had found its target.
She was not looking at Caelith.
She was looking at him.
He turned to Caelith.
Caelith was looking at the ballroom's chandelier with the expression of someone enjoying a very satisfying piece of architecture.
"You did that on purpose," Gerffron said.
"The lapel genuinely needed—"
"Caelith."
She looked at him.
She smiled.
It was the real smile, the warm one — the one that was entirely genuine and also entirely, completely unrepentant.
"The delegation is performing very well this evening," she said, with the specific, cheerful finality of someone changing a subject.
She slapped him on the back.
Not gently.
The friendly slap — the specific, firm, warm slap of a person who was making a point through physical expression rather than words, the point being: I have decided you are my friend and this is how I treat my friends.
Gerffron stumbled forward one step.
He turned.
He said: "That was—"
"Extremely," she said, beaming.
He looked at his back.
He looked at her.
He said, with the slightly helpless quality of a man who has spent two months being managed by this specific woman and has arrived at a resigned appreciation for it: "Your Highness has a very — your Highness expresses friendship in a very — the specific—"
"I was raised with four brothers," she said.
"That explains everything," Gerffron said.
She laughed.
He laughed.
The clicking of heels was behind him.

The clicking of heels in the ballroom was the specific sound of someone who wore their heels with intention — not the ambient heel-sound of a formal occasion, but the directed, purposeful sound of someone moving toward a destination.
He turned.
Gorgina.
She had crossed the thirty feet.
She was standing behind him with the expression that had not changed since the lapel adjustment — the cold, directed expression of someone who had made a decision about where they needed to be.
"Your Highness," she greeted frostily to Caelith, in the specific register she used when she was being formally correct and wanted the formality to communicate something about the situation's temperature.
"Your Grace," Caelith curtisied, and her voice had the warm, unhurried quality of someone who was entirely comfortable in the current situation.
"I wonder," Gorgina said, "if the princess's attentions might be better directed toward the delegation members she is nominally responsible for, rather than toward my household's staff."
"Your husband," Caelith said pleasantly, "is the court's appointed liaison to the delegation. His attentions are my direct concern as the delegation's principal. I was offering feedback on his performance this evening, which has been exceptional."
"The feedback," Gorgina said, "was a lapel adjustment."
"I notice details," Caelith said.
"I am certain you do."
"I also notice," Caelith said, in the same pleasant tone, "that certain people in this room have been considerably less attentive to their household's official representative this evening than a foreign crown princess has been. But I imagine the Duke is occupied with her own engagements."
Gorgina's jaw moved.
Caelith looked at the chandelier.
She said: "Advisory Consultant Voss has been exceptional this season. Both professionally and personally. I imagine the court will be discussing his contributions for some time."
She said it in the pleasantly informational tone of someone sharing a fact.
She said it with the specific timing of a person who understood that the name she had just said would land in the specific location she intended it to land.
Gorgina's expression achieved the specific, contained quality of a pressure that had been managed and was approaching the edge of management.
She opened her mouth.
"Your Grace," Gerffron said. He said it in the pleasant, professional tone he used for situations that required intervention. "The king's arrival is being announced shortly. I think we should all—"
"Ladies and gentlemen," the herald said, from the ballroom's formal entrance, in the carrying voice of someone who had been trained to fill a large room without strain.
"His Majesty King Zemon of the Zenos Empire."
The ballroom did what ballrooms did when kings arrived — the ambient conversation settling, the bodies orienting, the specific, collective adjustment of three hundred people giving their attention to a single point.
Gorgina looked at the entrance.
Caelith looked at the entrance.
Gerffron looked at the entrance.
