He had given the instruction to the driver with the specific, pleasant clarity of someone who had a plan and was executing the first step of it — not explaining the plan, only communicating the step. The driver had looked at him. The driver had looked at the snow that had begun falling approximately twenty minutes into the journey, which was the specific, slightly malicious snow of a winter evening that had decided to begin precisely when it would be most inconvenient.
Gerffron had looked at the snow.
He had thought: this is better than I planned.
He had said: "Two streets from the gate. Please."
Styrmir, beside him, had looked at him.

Gerffron looked at him.

"I — yes. I walked from the — from the turning. I did not want to — it is nothing. Please don't—"
"You walked," Callveth said again. "In the snow! Where is the Wadee carriage?"
"The Wadee carriage is—" Gerffron stopped. He shivered. He looked at his shoes. He said, in the specific, slightly crumpled voice of a man delivering information that cost him something: "The Wadee estate's carriages were otherwise engaged this evening. Lady Elowen and the Duke had — they had prior arrangements for their transport. I did not want to be a burden on the schedule."
The cluster of nobles was quiet.
"Prior arrangements," said Lady Tenne — forty-one, sharp, with the specific quality of someone who enjoyed the process of understanding things. "The Duke's own carriage, you mean. The Wadee estate's formal vehicle."
Gerffron looked at his feet.
He said: "The Duke had a — there was a prior engagement. With a — there was a carriage that arrived for her from another — from elsewhere. I did not want to inconvenience—"
He sneezed.
It was a very well-timed sneeze.
"Good heavens," Lady Tenne said.
"I'm perfectly fine," Gerffron said, with the specific, slightly pathetic bravery of a man who was clearly not fine and was insisting otherwise. "I only — I had asked for one of the secondary carriages to be available but apparently there was some confusion and it was not — and by the time I realised, the Duke had already—" He shivered again. "It is nothing. I simply walked. It was not far."
"Two streets," Callveth said.
"Yes. In the snow. It is not—"
He sneezed again.
"You will catch something," Lady Tenne said.
"I am quite robust," Gerffron said, with the specific expression of someone performing robustness while communicating its absence. "I only — I had thought perhaps I might ask one of the household staff for some allowance to hire a vehicle but it was late in the evening and the — there were no staff available who had the authority to—" He stopped. He looked at the gate. He said, with the voice of someone choosing words very carefully and choosing them in a way that was designed to communicate more than they said: "After the delegation concludes, I imagine I shall return to the estate and the usual — the ordinary domestic arrangement. The Duke has been very clear about the appropriate scope of my — of the role. It would not have been appropriate for me to insist."
The cluster of nobles had the quality of a cluster that had received a great deal of information in a very short time and was processing it with the focused enthusiasm of people for whom social information was a primary resource.
Gerffron shivered.
"Let us go in," Lady Tenne said, with the decisive warmth of a woman who had arrived at a position. "You are cold. The ballroom is warm."
"I don't want to—"
"Come," she said.
She took his arm.
She swept him through the gate.
The cluster moved with them — not because they were following Lady Tenne's direction, but because the cluster's collective instinct had determined that whatever was at the center of this situation was going to continue to produce information, and that being adjacent to the production was better than being at a distance.
"I heard he was placed under house arrest," one of them murmured — not to Gerffron, to the cluster, at a volume calibrated for the cluster's hearing.
"For the slave boy," someone else said. "Five years ago. He protected the slave from the market."
"That wasn't a crime," a third voice said, with the specific, firm quality of someone who had an opinion and was stating it regardless of the social geometry. "Slavery is prohibited in this empire. What he did was protect a citizen of the empire from an illegal transaction. That is not treason. That is compliance with the law as it exists."
"The Wadee estate had him locked in the east tower for three years," another voice said.
"Three years," said the firm voice, and the firmness had acquired something that was slightly past firmness. "For doing what the law required of him."
Gerffron was being ushered through the ballroom's entrance.
He heard the murmuring behind him.
He slipped into the ballroom.
He found a warming spot near one of the interior lamps.
He stopped shivering.
He straightened his coat.
He thought: Serves Gorgina right, she always leaves me behind! now for the actual work.
