Visible movement attracted attention, and attention at this stage of the process was not useful. "Reassessment?" Lashina said.
"Yes."
"And the neutral houses?"
Corven had looked at her.
"The neutral houses," she had said carefully, "are watching to see which direction produces the better stability. They are not committed to either position. But they are — persuadable."
"Good," Lashina had said. "Then we'll pursue."
She had drunk her tea.
She had moved to the next visit.

The third visit — to Lord Verath, who controlled three seats on the agricultural council and whose estate's debts to the crown's lending fund were, by any reasonable assessment, significant — had been a different kind of conversation entirely.
"The crown's lending fund," Lashina had said, "is managed at the Crown's discretion. Repayment schedules are — flexible, when the circumstances warrant flexibility."
Verath had looked at her.
"Your Majesty is very generous," he had said.
"The crown is invested in the prosperity of its noble houses," she had said. "Particularly the houses whose families have been part of the court's history for generations." She had looked at him. "Particularly those who demonstrate their commitment to the court's continuity."
Verath had understood.
He had communicated his understanding with the specific, careful efficiency of a man who had been in debt and had just been offered a way out that had a single condition.
"The Crown Prince," he had said, "has always had the court's best interests in mind."
"He has," Lashina had agreed.
She had moved to the next visit.

"I know the amount and the terms and the specific provision that makes it callable on the lender's demand. I also know that my father has been receiving reports about the guild's financial practices that have not yet been acted on."
Ashfer had looked at him.
"Reports that could be — managed," Teivel had continued, "under a different administration. Or could be acted on under the current one. The outcome depends significantly on who is managing the administrative priorities when the time comes."
Ashfer had been very quiet.
"I am not asking for much," Teivel had said. "Only that when the succession question comes formally before the court — when the process of recognizing my father's claimed heir begins — the votes and voices that can be brought to bear on the process's outcome are brought to bear on the correct side of it."
"The Crown Prince," Ashfer had said, slowly, "wants to ensure that the correct voices are heard."
"I want to ensure," Teivel had said, "that my friends are not disadvantaged by their debts at the same time that I am disadvantaged by a technicality in the succession law."
The meeting had been seventeen minutes.
Teivel had left it with a commitment.

This was not unusual.

Then Lady Rendwick arrived.

"Progressing," Lady Rendwick repeated, with the specific warmth of someone savoring the word. "How diplomatic. I suppose with the Crown Prince so — occupied, as he has been — it must be difficult to find the time for wedding planning."
"His Highness has many responsibilities," Mallory said.
"Many," Lady Veth agreed, and the specific quality of her agreement was the agreement of someone who was endorsing a statement that meant several things simultaneously.
"I did see him with Duke of Wadee's at the King's birthday banquet," Lady Rendwick said, conversationally, to the table in general. "He danced with her, didn't he? Several times? Quite — attentive." She looked at Mallory. "Of course, the Duke and His Highness are old — friends. I imagine Lady Mallory understands the nature of these longstanding connections."
The table had the specific, charged quality of a group of women who were watching something happen and were performing not-watching.
Mallory held her cup.
"The Duke of Wadee," she said, "is a distinguished member of the court. His Highness has many longstanding professional relationships."
"Of course," Lady Rendwick said. "Professional. Naturally." She stirred her tea. "Though I must say — for a man with such a lovely intended, he does spend a remarkable amount of his — professional time — in the company of a married woman. One wonders what the married woman's husband makes of it. Poor man. Although—" she tilted her head "—I hear the consort has his own — diversions. With the Veldrathi delegation's charming young advisor. The one with the interesting eyes."
The table was very quiet.
Every person at it was performing not-watching with enormous effort.
Lady Mallory set down her cup.
She set it down with the specific, deliberate care of someone performing a neutral action while managing something that was not neutral.
"Lady Rendwick," she said, and her voice had the quality it had when she was being very, very precise, "is very well-informed about the domestic arrangements of other people's households."
"One hears things," Lady Rendwick said.
"One does," Mallory said. "And one might observe that the people who are most reliably informed about other people's arrangements are generally the people with the least interesting arrangements of their own. It leaves so much more time for observation."
The table inhaled.
Lady Rendwick looked at her.
Her smile had not entirely moved.
"How refreshing," she said. "A young woman with opinions. Although I do wonder — with the Crown Prince so devoted to his — longstanding professional connections — whether a young woman in Lady Mallory's position might find herself wondering if the wedding is quite as certain as—"
"I find myself," Mallory said, standing, and her voice was entirely level and entirely final, "in need of some air. Please excuse me, Countess Harven. The tea was lovely."
She left.
She left in the specific, controlled way of someone who was not going to give the room the satisfaction of a visible retreat, who was going to perform departure as a decision rather than a flight, and who was going to wait until she was in her carriage before she allowed her hands to shake.

He sat in his chair.

Mallory looked at him.

"The context," she said, and her voice had begun to acquire the specific, controlled tremor of someone who is managing anger and has not yet lost the management, "in which I spent this afternoon at a social occasion being publicly informed, by several women who find their entertainment in other people's suffering, that my betrothed spends his available attention on a married woman to such a degree that it is the primary topic of conversation in the court's social circuit. The context in which I was — humiliated. In public. Because of your — because of your—"
She stopped.
"Who told you to attend the tea party?" he said.
She stared at him.
"I am simply asking," he said, with the specific, impervious quality of a man who has decided on his register for this conversation and is not going to leave it, "who suggested you attend? These social occasions — if you find them uncomfortable, perhaps you might consider—"
"You are telling me," she said, slowly, "to stay home?!"
"I am suggesting that if the social circuit's conversations are distressing—"
"You are telling me to stay home and avoid the social circuit because your behaviour has made the social circuit uncomfortable for me."
"My behaviour," he said, "is the behaviour of a man with a complex professional and personal life. If it is about the Duke of Wadee, thenI'll say it again that she is a colleague of many years—"
"She is a married woman that you have been chasing for seven years," Mallory said, and the tremor had gone from her voice and something colder had replaced it. "I am aware. The entire court is aware! The entire court has been aware since before I arrived in it. I was not unaware of what I was walking into." She looked at him. "What I want to know is whether you intend to stop."
He looked at her.
He said: "What man doesn't—"
"Don't," she said.
"—doesn't have a life outside the marriage. This is the way things work. You would be my wife. You would attend the occasions, manage the household, be present at the court functions—"
"Bear your heirs," she supplied.
"Yes."
"And manage the — the results — of your activities outside the marriage."
He looked at her with the specific, bored patience of a man who does not understand why a conversation is taking longer than it needs to.
"A wife," he said, "manages the household. That is—"
"That is not," she said, "a marriage."
"It is the marriage available to a woman in your position."
She looked at him.
She looked at him for a long moment.
She said: "You are the son of King Zemon."
"Yes," he said.
"King Zemon," she said, "who loved his first queen, who had one son with her because they had one son, not because he was managing multiple — arrangements, who has been described, by every account available, as a man of genuine fidelity to the women he chose." She looked at Teivel. "You are his son."
Something moved in Teivel's expression.
"What exactly are you trying to make up here, Lady Mallory?," he said, and the flatness was gone, replaced by something that was not quite anger but was the specific, tight quality of a person who has been touched in a place they don't want touched.
"I'm leaving," she said.
"Lady Mallory—"
"I am leaving," she said, and she was already at the door, "without waiting for your dismissal, which I understand is something that is done in this room."
She was in the doorway.
She stopped.
She said, without turning:
"I hope you never get what you want, Your Highness. I mean that with every available sincerity. I hope that the thing you have been chasing for seven years remains, for the remainder of your life, just out of reach. I think it already is. I think you know it is." She paused. "Good afternoon."
She left.
Teivel sat in his office for a long time.
He looked at the door.
He thought about Gorgina.
He thought about the garden and the unbothered look and the quality of a woman who had been recalculating.
He thought about Lady Mallory's voice saying: I think you know it is.
He thought: she is wrong.
He thought it a second time, with slightly more effort.
He picked up his papers.
He went back to work.
