By the time Ryder Sharp came downstairs after changing, his father was about to speak, but Ryder beat him to it.
"Dad, I want to talk to you."
"Fine. As it happens, I have something to say to you, too."
Sydney Sawyer made tea for the two of them and sat right down next to Ryder Sharp, giving him a meaningful look.
Her look was a warning:
Mr. Sharp is furious. Tread carefully.
She was simply hoping he would deliver the hard truth gently.
But how could a straight-shooter like Ryder Sharp possibly get her hint?
He actually thought Sydney Sawyer was trying to tell him:
Hurry up and get your father on board.
So, the first thing Ryder Sharp said was:
"Dad, do you remember what you said yesterday?"
"What?"
Ronald Sharp's mind was a complete muddle. So many things had happened yesterday, and he had said a lot. With Ryder Sharp's sudden question, he couldn't recall which specific remark he was referring to.
