Chapter 18 - CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: TANGLED LOYALTIES

The sharp, sterile scent of antiseptic filled Amelia's lungs the moment she stepped into the hospital room, making her chest tighten.

The steady hum of machines and the faint beeping of monitors only added to the weight pressing down on her. Her pulse pounded loudly in her ears, each step toward the bed feeling heavier than the last.

Kale lay against the stiff white sheets, his body unnaturally still. Thick bandages covered a large part of his chest, a stark reminder of how close he had come to something far worse.

Yet his eyes were open, clear and searching, and the moment they found hers, something inside her shifted.

"Amelia…"

His voice was rough, strained, but there was a warmth in it that caught her off guard. It was not the voice of the guarded man she had known, the one who always seemed to be hiding something beneath the surface.

This was softer. Honest. Almost vulnerable.

Her throat tightened as she moved closer to him. "You should not be talking," she said quietly, though her voice betrayed the emotions she was trying to keep contained.

Kale gave a faint, pained smile, his gaze never leaving her face. "You are here. That is enough."

The words lingered between them, heavier than they should have been. For a brief second, Amelia felt the pull of something simple, something safe.

But it did not last.

The sudden slam of a door outside shattered the fragile calm.

Her body tensed instantly.

She did not need to turn to know who it was.

Xavier Steel stepped into the room moments later, his presence filling the space in a way that felt almost suffocating.

He looked as composed as ever, his dark suit sharp against the stark whiteness of the hospital walls. Not a single strand of hair out of place. Not a hint of emotion on his face.

But his eyes found hers immediately.

"I thought I should check in," he said smoothly, his tone casual, as if he had just walked into an ordinary conversation. "Make sure you are not causing unnecessary trouble."

Amelia exhaled slowly, trying to steady herself. "You do not need to be here."

"I know," Xavier replied, taking a step closer. His voice lowered slightly, just enough to make the air between them shift. "I want to be."

The distance between them shrank, and she could feel the heat of his presence brush against her skin. It was subtle, but it was enough to make her pulse quicken.

"Someone has to make sure you stay out of danger," he added, his gaze dark and intent.

Her eyes flickered back to Kale. He shifted slightly on the bed, a faint wince crossing his face, but there was something else there too. Something she could not quite name.

"I can take care of myself," Amelia said softly, though the conviction she wanted to project did not fully reach her voice.

Because the truth was far more complicated.

Gratitude tugged at her heart when she looked at Kale. He had stepped in front of her without hesitation. He had taken the blow meant for her.

But then there was Xavier.

Dangerous and Unpredictable.

And somehow, no matter how much she tried to deny it, she felt drawn to him in a way that made no sense.

Xavier reached out, his fingers brushing lightly against hers. The contact was brief, almost insignificant, yet it sent a sharp, unexpected jolt through her.

"You do not have to face everything alone," he murmured, his voice low, almost too soft.

For a moment, she hesitated.

Then she pulled her hand back, forcing a small, defiant smile onto her lips. "I am not someone who needs saving."

A faint shadow of amusement crossed his face. "I am aware," he said. "That is exactly what makes you so difficult."

Before she could respond, a quiet cough broke through the tension.

Kale.

Amelia turned immediately, moving to his side without thinking. "Do not strain yourself," she said gently, her tone shifting as she reached for him. "You have already done more than enough."

Kale's hand found hers, his grip weak but deliberate. He held on as if letting go would cost him something he could not afford to lose.

"I just want you safe," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

The words struck deeper than they should have.

And for a fleeting moment, something flickered through Amelia's mind.

A memory. A realization. A truth she had tried to ignore.

The small inconsistencies. The way Kale always seemed to know more than he should. The careful questions. The subtle observations.

And then the pieces began to fall into place.

Kale had not entered her life by accident.

He had been sent.

The thought settled heavily in her chest, cold and unsettling. The Mafia. The same network she had been investigating. The same one tied to her parents' deaths.

Kale had been watching her. Reporting on her. Staying close under the guise of something else.

And Beth.

A sharp realization hit her.

The flirtation. The attention. The way Kale had positioned himself around her best friend.

It had never been real.

It had been a distraction. A cover.

But something had changed.

Because the man lying in front of her now was not acting. The pain in his eyes was real. The way he held her hand was real.

He had crossed a line he was never meant to cross.

He had fallen for her.

And the Mafia had noticed.

Amelia's grip tightened slightly around his hand as her thoughts raced. The attack. The timing. It had not been random.

It had been a warning.

Or worse.

A punishment.

Her gaze flickered briefly to Xavier, and for the first time, she saw something different in his expression. Not just control. Not just distance.

Understanding.

As if he already knew pieces of the truth she was only just beginning to grasp.

His parents had been part of that same world. That same darkness.

But they had tried to leave it behind.

They had helped her parents. Helped them escape when they discovered who they truly were. Federal spies hidden in plain sight.

And for that, they had all paid the price.

The Mafia had erased them. Every last one.

The weight of that truth settled between them, unspoken but powerful.

Xavier stepped closer again, his voice dropping so only she could hear. "This is bigger than you think," he said quietly. "And it is already in motion."

A chill ran down her spine.

She pulled back slightly, needing space, needing air. "We will see," she replied, though the uncertainty in her voice was impossible to hide.

Kale's grip on her hand loosened, exhaustion finally pulling him under. His eyes closed slowly, his breathing evening out as the machines continued their steady rhythm.

Amelia stood there for a moment longer, caught between everything she felt and everything she had just realized.

Then, without another word, she turned and walked out of the room.

The hallway felt colder. Quieter.

As she stepped out of the hospital, the night air hit her again, but this time it did not feel the same.

Nothing did

Her world was shifting too fast, pulling her deeper into something she could no longer control. Loyalties were no longer clear. Trust was fragile. Every connection felt like a risk.

And her heart was caught in the middle of it all.

Somewhere between truth and deception.

Between duty and desire.

And deep down, she knew one thing with terrifying certainty.

The hardest choices were still ahead of her.
