Chapter 35 - Ep. 21: Babel part 1

Episode fanfic title: Got a Google Translate with ya? part 1

///////////////////////000///////////////////////

Location: Still in space...

"That's it." Kilowog starts, "Aya's stunt left us high and dry."

Hal presses down some buttons on the Interceptor's console. "I can see that," He looks down at his power ring in worry, "and my Ring is under 5%."

"Yeah. I'm near that, too."

As soon as Razer entered the main hangar, he joined in the conversation: "It's a wonder we have any power left, Ring or otherwise." Hal turns to meet him and asks, "How's it look down there?" "The main battery is still as dry as the Sigocean desert." He annoyingly explained.

"And Kia and Cassie?"

On cue, Kia interrupted her friend's uncle with: "We survived, despite Aya having to go haywire on us. The erapin IV drip is safe, but there's no more." Holding up the torn IV bag for emphasis, she drew concerned glances before setting it down.

"Plus the fact that my battery is ALSO out of juice so, explain to me...What was Aya thinking about ditching us?"

Razer didn't seem to want to answer that since he was the one who rejected Aya in the first place.

"She wasn't." Hal said, trying to ease the troubling situation they're all in, "At least... not in the way she normally does. Once you three wizards find a way to get the Interceptor moving, we can go find and help her."

Normally, Kia would scoff at that, but instead, she just crossed her arms and rolled her eyes, "All in all, it still could be worse." All of a sudden, they get pulled by the gravity well, making everyone almost collapse and get hit by the console: "Whoa!"

"And now it is." Razer steadily walks towards the others, "We've drifted into a planet's gravity well. It's pulling us into the atmosphere." Realizing a crash landing was close, the Lanterns quickly devised a plan.

As the Interceptor plunged to the planet, Hal calls Kia: "Kia, protect Cassie. Now!" "On it!" Rushing to Cassandra's side, Kia saw the flatlining monitor. Panicked, she grabbed car batteries and solar panels that she had stolen from her parents' garage.

Now she has them hidden in her closet and is currently using them. Already prepped for her to use, Kia carries them out of her room, flying to the medbay, as she desperately tries to power the vital machine to prevent any sort of alarm over Hal's niece's condition to the others.

"We're in no shape for a crash landing!" She hears Kilowog shouting through the ring, "And our Rings are too low to abandon ship." "We need to get more power to the guidance system, so I can land us." Hal returns the shout.

Only for Kia to immediately keep her distance and focus on saving her best friend. Once she was done, she finally placed the oxygen mask over Cassandra's mouth so she wouldn't lose her, and it turns out, the car batteries and mini solar panels work like a charm.

Relieved, Kia noticed the blue ring on Cassie's finger glowing, a good sign. "We're entering the atmosphere, Cassie," she said. "Soon, everyone will be at risk of losing their translation skills. Your ring is glowing; I wish you'd wake up. Razer needs you. I need you. Please hurry."

"Mine still has a charge." Razer offered, out of the blue, as we got back to where the male lanterns were debating on whether or not they could use a red lantern's battery for their protection.

Both Green Lanterns widened their eyes as an idea came to mind. "Do you think we can use it?" Kilowog asked, slightly excited, "Do it!" Hal agreed, as there was nothing left to argue other than survival instincts.

Scene changes as the team was inside the battery engine to watch Razer use his skills to connect it with his battery. Covering the walls with 15 red holographic wires around it.

"We will not be getting the Seven Comet safety rating for this," Kilowog exclaimed.

Hal suddenly comments, watching Razer work hard on finally ready to connect the wires to the Interceptor's battery, "It's a plumber's nightmare, all right, but will it work?" "We have no choice but to find out. Set your personal shields to maximum." Razer orders.

Before he could connect his battery to the Interceptor, they agreed to his order. He then asked Kia through the ring, "Is Cassandra safe?" Kia replied, "Yeah, but in case we go south and die, your girlfriend's ring is glowing, so she might wake up from her coma sooner than we thought."

Razer took a deep breath before letting out a sigh of quiet relief, "By the way, if we do explode," Turning around while still kneeling on the floor near the battery, he continues: "you two are acceptable souls to be vaporized with."

He smirked slightly, making Kilowog confused.

"Wait, what now?"

Hal quickly shuts him off with, "No time for good-bye speeches. Fire up the engine!" Hesitation was writing on the red lantern's face before putting two wires together that it finally worked, but it didn't seem that sooner or later that his battery was temporarily working.

"We've got power!" Kilowog happily grunts, "Do your planet thing, Jordan." "Razer, keep that rig running." The male human ordered, as Razer struggles to keep the wires together: "I'll do what I can."

Running inside to return to the main hangar, Hal expertly sits down in the captain's seat and guides the Interceptor, the makeshift power source sputtering erratically. "This is like trying to fly a brick," he announced, his voice strained. "Brace yourselves, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!"

Outside, the Interceptor screamed through the atmosphere, a fiery meteor against the alien sky. Inside, everyone held on for dear life. Kilowog, despite his size, was gripping the console for dear life.

Kia, roped beside Cassie, watched over her friend, who was unconsciously protected by a green shield bubble. Cassie's glowing ring remained glowing; Meanwhile, Razer, sweat dripping from his brow, fought to maintain the connection between his battery and the Interceptor.

Which was a big struggle considering that connecting both red and green energy was a serious no-no if the team ever considered doing it again, "Brace for impact!" Everyone gets ready for the big impact.

"You say that a lot, but I don't think it's true." Kilowog arguably tells him, only for Cassie's Uncle to contact Razer via ring with concern for his teammate, "Razer, you all right?" "I'm fine. But my personal battery looks worse than yours. I may need to steal a new one."

He contacted Kia.

"Kia, you okay? How's Cassie?"

She grunted, replying sarcastically, as she let out a small grunt of discomfort from her left rib being the cause of it, "Considering I almost died thanks to your flying, I'm superb. Cassie is perfectly alright as well, in case you were wondering."

"Mind if you join us at the main hangar?"

"Sure."

And with that simple word, Kia moved to meet up with Razer, who was waiting nearby. Together, they walked towards the entrance of the main hangar, the large metal doors looming before them as they stepped inside to hear Kilowog annoyingly sighing at the cracked window.

"Oh, great. Now what?" He asked in wonder. "No biggie," Hal replied. "We'll wait for the main battery to recharge, power up our Rings, and seal the cracks. Back in business." "The main will take 10 hours to recharge, Jordan."

Kia nodded, agreeing with Kilowog and chiming in: "And after that flying stunt, I don't think I can trust you." "So we hang out till then. I could use a nap." Though Razer informed them of the bad news by showing the signs that the atmosphere was safe, unfortunately, it wasn't.

"I don't believe that would be wise." He explains: "This planet's atmosphere is mostly methane, and it's leaking into the ship." Ever so slowly, the window of the Interceptor breaks, exposing them to the lethal gas.

Though the Lanterns were saved by the protection of their rings, Kia freaks out, "Cassie!" Everyone instantly widen their eyes in fear as they went to the medbay to find Cassie protected with the oxygen mask over her mouth and nose.

"She's good. Let's go find a place to settle or will never come back for her." Hal ordered, everyone agrees as they flew outside, whereas Razer stops midday to glance over his shoulder to see Cassandra's unconscious body still unresponsive, but her ring proved otherwise.

He doesn't think much of it, and leaves.

Not knowing that a blue energy had surrounded her with protection and healing as her finger twitched slightly.

With the team, Razer joins them and points out the Dome-sealed citadel in front of their sight, "There!" "We need to get to that settlement before we all die of poisonous gas." Kia tells them, as Cassandra's Uncle joins in: "We'll use it as a lifeboat until the main battery recharges."

They decide to explore the planet, discovering that there is a dome-sealed citadel 25 km away, and start to fly over there. However, the rings don't have enough power to fly, and they fall to the ground.

"Whoa!"

"Whoa! Whoa!"

Stumbling and rolling to the ground, the three lanterns groaned, except for one. The team wondered where the other green lantern member was, until they looked up in shock to see Kia still hovering over them. "I'm so grateful I charged mine earlier, before the whole 'Aya' incident."

"Ya didn't think of telling us this now?" Kilowog suddenly glares up at Kia, who simply shrugs at him with no care, "Just wanted to enjoy your struggle, Kilo." "Okay, cool it." Hal stopped his friend from scolding her, and he turned to her: "As for you, Kia. You'll have to join us on foot."

Razer seemed to notice her unimpressed look, clearly knowing Kia wasn't reacting to the punishment from Cassandra's Uncle, and said, "Perhaps it would be wise if she went to the citadel and found a place for us to enter." He suggested.

"Fine." Kia crosses her arms, still unbothered. I'll scout ahead and see what we're dealing with, "Just try not to get yourselves poisoned while I'm gone." "Be careful," Razer warns as she takes off toward the citadel.

As Kia glides through the air, she observes the landscape below, dotted with odd rock formations and the occasional patch of hardy desert flora. The dome of the citadel grows larger in her view, revealing its metallic texture and towering spires that reach for the sky.

She can't help but feel a sense of urgency; they need to find safety and regroup before the atmosphere becomes more dangerous.

When she reaches the entrance of the citadel, she notices that the large, reinforced doors are slightly ajar. Curiosity piqued, she pushes one of the doors open and steps inside. The interior is vast and eerily silent, illuminated by soft blue lights embedded in the walls.

Meanwhile, back outside, Hal, Razer, and Kilowog are trying to figure out their next move.

"We can't just sit here," Hal insists, looking at the sky, which appears to be darkening. "We need to find a way to recharge our rings and get Cassie help." Kilowog grunts, "And we need to do it fast. I don't like the look of that sky. It's becoming more hazardous."

Razer forcibly sighed, "We'll follow Kia's lead," He suggests. "If she found something useful in the citadel, we might have a chance to survive."

As they prepare to take off running, they spot Kia returning, a determined look on her face.

"I found a way inside!" she exclaims, "There's a storage area with oxygen tanks and medical supplies we can use. Plus, a control room where we can access the systems of the citadel." Just as she was going to land, Kia noticed them talking about their rings.

And heard Hal's words while staring at his ring, tiredly: "Good work, Kia...But there's not enough juice left for the flight to get there." "That citadel is easily 25km away." Razer breathlessly huffs out of breath.

"Nothing like a brisk mid-day run for our lives." Kilowog gets up from the ground, trying to be confident: "Try and keep up. You too, Roberts." "Okay, fine." Just like that, the Lanterns then begin to pace themselves towards the city.

After a while and several attempts to cheer up the team through chanting motivational rhyming lines by Kilowog, it was Hal's turn to say it.

"Guardians make my head hurt. Appa's face is as old as dirt." Trying to make a motivation rhyme in the process, which causes Kia to snort out a snicker, and finishes his rhyme with this: "Even though everyone respects him, he knows that he's B-I-T-C-H!"

Razer slowly raises a tired brow at them, but doesn't say anything, whereas Kilowog looks at them incredulously and tiredly comments: "The cadence is supposed to keep you moving; that doesn't even rhyme." "Really? It does in our language." Hal tells him.

"Our rings just translate other languages, they can't make 'em rhyme." The large alien pig explained, only for Razer to annoyingly finish his words with, "Or make them less irritating."

"Who's irritating?" Both male green lanterns synced in question, with confused looks: "Anyone wearing green, apparently," Razer said, annoyingly. "Except for Kia; she's exceptional." "Well, you're no picnic either," Hal argued.

At that moment, they heard a cool breeze coming from above and discovered it was Kia.

She was using her power ring to create a holographic fan for them. "What? No, thank you?" she exclaimed as she hovered above them. The holographic fan whirred softly, producing a refreshing breeze that cut through the rising heat.

"Seriously, I'm just trying to help with the whole 'keeping cool' situation," she remarked playfully. Hal shakes his head, a grin breaking through his earlier frustration. "Thanks, I guess. But we really do need to move if we want to make it to the citadel before the gas gets worse."

Kilowog nods in agreement and gestures forward. The group begins to jog, with Kia effortlessly gliding alongside them. As they move, Hal glances up at her. "So, what did you find inside? Anything we can use right away?"

"Definitely," Kia replies, her eyes sparkling with determination. "There are lots of people in there, not nice, might I add, and I found weird places to find emergency oxygen tanks— I also noticed how complex it was."

Razer says, his brows furrowing slightly. "We have options, I suppose."

Kilowog and Hal exchange glances, both feeling renewed motivation. "Let's make it to the citadel first, and then we can brainstorm on the rest," He says, "Luckily, we're here."

Sure enough, the team made it as they were met with a large metal gate, securely but heavily guarded. Hal calls out to the citizens of the city, introducing themselves as Lanterns. An alien appears, identifies the Green Lanterns, and orders them to be shot at.

Kia uses her shield to protect them, and leads them a way to escape from the barrage of fire by hiding behind large rocks. Soon afterwards, Kilowog's ring loses all of its remaining power, leaving him in his native clothing.

Hal's ring depletes soon after, as they both bend their knees to the ground and suffocate due to lack of oxygen. Fortunately, Razer creates an air bubble around them that allows them to breathe.

They immediately have a hard time communicating, having to use Razer, the only one with a working ring, as a translator.
