Chapter 55 - C55: Stain's everywhere

November 13, 2019. Anchor, Command Hub.

The global livestream hadn't stopped since Mereel first fired the continuous-wave lasers into the comet's crust. For four days, the world had watched the Nomad carve up an interstellar visitor, and now, they were watching the final act of our logistical masterpiece.

I stood before the main holotable, my eyes fixed on the sweeping multi-feed display that Archi had compiled from the external drone cameras. It showed ten different views of Earth, all focused on pre-arranged, yellow-painted circles on tarmacs and university clearings.

"Mule-One, final approach to Darmstadt, Germany," Mereel reported from the XO's chair. His hands were hovering over the haptic controls, ready to take manual override if the automated descent faltered. "Altitude is two hundred meters. Trajectory is locked."

On the primary screen, our heavy lifter drifted silently down from the low-hanging European clouds. The Mule didn't look like a vessel of peace; it looked like a brutalist block of dark iron, violently defying the laws of aerodynamics. Down on the ground, the contrast was jarring. The European Space Agency had cleared a massive perimeter, guarded by rings of armored military vehicles and hundreds of soldiers scanning the sky with rifles. But standing in the very center, entirely unarmed and practically vibrating with anticipation, was a small cluster of scientists in high-visibility jackets.

They weren't looking at the soldiers. They were staring up at the belly of our drone.

With a deep, resonant clunk that registered on our audio telemetry, the Mule's magnetic grapplers released. The frost-covered containment pod—the size of a standard shipping container, but actively maintaining a vacuum of near-absolute zero—thudded heavily onto the tarmac.

"Delivery confirmed," I said, checking the manifest on my console. "Mule-One is detached. Bring it back up, Mereel."

The massive drone didn't even pause to hover. Its anti-grav drives hummed, displacing the air with a low thrum, and it shot straight back up into the clouds. On the ground feed, the soldiers visibly flinched at the sudden, impossible acceleration. The scientists simply swarmed the pod.

"Mule-Four is touching down at MIT," Judy noted from her logistics terminal, swiping a new feed to the center of the holotable. "NASA officials are in attendance. Looks like they brought a crane, but our pod just set itself down flawlessly."

I watched the MIT feed closely. Behind the cheering scientists, standing near a row of black SUVs, were men in dark suits and military uniforms. They weren't cheering. They were watching the pod with the cold, calculating stares of people trying to figure out how to weaponize a puzzle box.

"They look nervous," Mereel noted, catching my gaze.

"They are," I replied, crossing my arms. "We just demonstrated that we have heavy-lift vehicles capable of penetrating their airspace globally, completely ignoring their radar nets, and dropping multi-ton payloads with millimeter precision."

Over the next hour, we fulfilled the manifest. Mules descended over Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow, and London. They dropped containment pods in Paris, New York, and Rio de Janeiro. Every single drop was a flawless execution of our orbital logistics.

When the tenth and final Mule locked safely back into the Nomad's ventral hangar bay, the heavy bulkheads hissed shut, sealing our ship from the vacuum once again.

I leaned back in the command chair, exhaling a long, slow breath. The tension that had been sitting between my shoulder blades for the last week finally began to dissolve.

"All units secured," Archi's voice resonated from speakers across the Hub. "The Ledger indicates that the public livestream has successfully concluded. We sustained an average of four point two million concurrent connections over the final hour."

"Cut the feed," I ordered. "And let's get the Nomad tucked back into her dock. We have a lot of work to do."

Two Days Later. November 15, 2019. Anchor, Engineering Hub.

The station had settled into its post-comet rhythm. C.O.R.E. was performing exactly as intended, handling the daily administrative bloat. It managed the increased population of forty-three researchers, optimized the atmospheric recycling to compensate for Rey's expanding hydroponic forests, and processed the endless queue of minor 3D-printing requests.

I finally had the mental bandwidth to focus on core engineering.

The eight thousand tons of cometary ice we had kept for ourselves required specialized handling. We couldn't just use the nanite swarm to refine volatile interstellar material. So, for the last forty-eight hours, the nanite swarm had been busy expanding the station downwards.

Through the viewport of my personal lab, I watched the localized storm of silver mist weaving the heavy titanium skeleton of a brand-new module: the Automated Foundries. It was a thick, heavily armored industrial ring hanging directly below the main Engineering Hub. Once the nanites finished sealing the outer hull, it would be used to safely melt down the ancient ice, extract the exotic metals, and refine them into the fissile components needed for a new reactor.

I turned away from the window and sat down in the cool blue light of my holographic displays. Lines of code and complex magnetic confinement schematics scrolled across the air in front of me. I was trying to map the energy flow for that future reactor, running simulations on how to integrate the alien isotopes without blowing a hole in the side of the station.

"Surgrim."

Archi's voice cut through the quiet hum of the servers. It wasn't his usual polite, conversational tone. It was flat, clinical, and carried the specific cadence he used for high-priority system alerts.

"What is it, Archi?" I asked, not taking my eyes off the magnetic flow simulation. "Did C.O.R.E. misallocate the thermal venting again?"

"Negative. The station's internal systems are operating at peak efficiency. The alert pertains to terrestrial news feeds. I have detected a highly anomalous pattern regarding the cometary samples we delivered forty-eight hours ago."

I stopped typing. The simulation froze in mid-air. "Show me."

The magnetic schematics vanished, instantly replaced by a cascade of filtered global video feeds.

The first was a grainy, high-altitude drone feed from Beijing. It showed the main science quad of the university where we had dropped the pod. The yellow circle was still painted on the ground, but the scientists were gone. Instead, three heavy military transport vehicles had smashed through the main gates. A platoon of soldiers in full tactical gear had formed a perimeter.

I watched in cold silence as heavy military cranes hoisted the pristine white containment pod onto a flatbed truck.

"State media in Beijing has announced that the military is assuming control of the sample, citing immediate national security concerns and the potential for unverified biological hazards," Archi translated, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "The university faculty has been placed under house arrest."

"They confiscated it," I muttered, a cold knot forming in my stomach.

"It is a global pattern," Archi stated.

The holotable shifted. A live CNN broadcast from Washington D.C. took over. A frantic reporter was standing behind a military barricade outside MIT. Armored personnel carriers were parked on the lawns.

"General Vance's office, operating under emergency executive authority, has declared a 'National Quarantined Science Zone' around all recipient institutions within the United States," Archi summarized the scrolling ticker at the bottom of the news feed. "All alien ice is being immediately seized and transported to a high-security Department of Defense containment facility in Nevada. The official justification is identical: protection against extraterrestrial pathogens."

Another feed popped up. Armed federal police in Moscow raiding a lab. Another feed from London showed the British military cordoning off Oxford.

One after another. The pattern was identical.

The academic celebration had lasted exactly as long as the public livestream. The moment the cameras were off, the moment the global public went back to their daily routines, the governments had struck. They had moved with synchronized, ruthless efficiency.

They weren't interested in the complex amino acids Rey was so excited about. They weren't interested in the origins of the solar system. They saw materials that defied their current understanding of physics, and they immediately panicked. They wanted the isotopes. They wanted the metallurgy. They wanted a weapon, or at the very least, they wanted to ensure their geopolitical rivals didn't build one first.

I stared at the flashing military lights on the screens. I watched Vance's soldiers hauling our priceless, pristine scientific payload away at gunpoint. They were treating the greatest scientific discovery in human history like a smuggled nuclear warhead.

The door to the lab hissed open. Judy walked in, followed closely by Mereel. Neither of them said a word. They just stood behind me, staring at the cascading feeds of military raids.

"Rey is in the Atrium," Judy said, her voice unusually quiet. "He's watching the feeds on the main screen. Sarah Lin is with him. She just got off an encrypted call with a colleague at MIT. They took everything. Hard drives, physical samples, spectrographic data. They threatened the researchers with treason charges if they spoke to the press."

Mereel crossed his arms, his jaw set. "It's an arms race. We gave them fire, and they immediately started looking for a way to burn down the other guy's house."

I didn't answer right away. I kept my eyes on the screens.

The exhilaration I had felt two days ago was completely gone. I didn't feel angry. I didn't feel the urge to yell, or to fly the Nomad down there and blast Vance's trucks to ash. That would just be playing their game. It would validate their paranoia.

Instead, what I felt was a deep, exhausting sense of systemic failure.

As an IT consultant, I had spent my life dealing with broken systems. You could write the most elegant, flawless, perfectly optimized code in the world, but if you installed it on a server with failing, corrupted hardware, it was going to crash.

The Earth was corrupted hardware.

We had tried a workaround. I had tried to bypass the military-industrial complex by open-sourcing the discovery, by giving it directly to the scientists under the protection of absolute transparency. It was a good patch. But it wasn't enough. The legacy code of human paranoia and greed was too deeply embedded in the operating system. You couldn't patch it out.

"Surgrim?" Mereel asked quietly. "Do we retaliate? We could use the Ledger to expose the raids. Rally the public."

"No," I said, my voice steady, analytical. I finally swiped my hand through the hologram, dismissing the news feeds. The room plunged back into its cool, quiet blue.

"Why not?" Judy frowned. "We have the platform. We can show the world what Vance is doing."

"Because it doesn't matter, Judy," I said, turning to face them. "The public will be outraged for a week, and then Vance will leak a fake report about a 'dangerous alien bacteria' found in the ice, and the public will thank him for saving them. It's an unwinnable cycle. We are trying to run next-generation software on a Bronze Age machine."

I walked over to the main console and brought up a 3D map of the Sol system. The glowing yellow sun sat in the center, surrounded by the orbital rings of the planets. Earth was a tiny blue speck.

"We gave them a miracle," I said, pointing at the blue speck. "And their immediate, instinctual reaction was to put a gun to its head and lock it in a bunker. They are terrified of us. And terrified people do stupid, destructive things."

Mereel looked at the map, understanding dawning in his eyes. "You think they're going to come after the Anchor."

"Eventually," I nodded. "Not today. Not tomorrow. But in ten years? Twenty? Once they reverse-engineer enough of that ice to build a drive that can reach L5? Yes. They won't tolerate a sovereign, technologically superior entity sitting in their backyard forever. To them, we aren't a research station. We're a floating threat."

"So, what's the play?" Judy asked, her logistical mind instantly shifting to problem-solving mode. "Do we fortify? Build defense platforms?"

"Fortifying just turns this place into a castle under siege," I said, shaking my head. "If we stay in this system, we will always be playing defense. We will spend the next fifty years looking over our shoulders, waiting for Vance or whoever replaces him to launch a preemptive strike. I am not spending the rest of my life acting as a warden for an ungrateful planet."

I tapped the console, zooming the map out past the Oort Cloud, past the edge of the sun's gravitational influence, until the neighboring stars swung into view.

I highlighted a trinary star system 4.37 light-years away.

"Alpha Centauri," I said.

Judy stared at the glowing dot. "Surgrim... that's outside the system. That's interstellar. The Nomad is fast, but it would take us years to get there."

"With our current drives, yes," I agreed. "But we have eight thousand tons of primordial isotopes currently being refined in the lower ring. We have the materials for a second reactor. A reactor capable of generating a localized subspace distortion field."

Mereel's eyes widened. He had read the same sci-fi books I had. "You want to build a FTL drive? A warp bubble?"

"I want to build a bridge," I corrected him. "The Sol system is a closed network, and the admins are toxic. If we want to build the future, if we want to actually use the technology Archi has without looking over our shoulders every five minutes, we need a larger operational radius. We need a fresh start."

I looked at the two of them. They didn't look afraid. They looked intrigued. They were my friends. They escaped with me from Earth, built a space station from scratch, and mined a comet. A warp drive was just the next logical ticket on the board.

"Archi," I said, addressing the room.

"Listening, Surgrim," the system replied instantly.

"Suspend the architectural plans for the station's residential expansion. Reroute all automated foundry production toward the Nomad's engineering bay," I ordered. "We are going to design a spatial distortion drive."

"I must remind you," Archi noted, his voice carrying that familiar, mathematical caution. "The current structural geometry of the Nomad is highly sub-optimal for the gravitational sheer forces generated by an Alcubierre metric. A FTL jump would likely rip the hull apart."

"I know," I said, pulling up the blocky, brutalist schematic of our ship. It was an anvil. It was built to haul cargo and smash through orbital debris, not to slip smoothly through the fabric of space-time. "So we aren't just building a new engine. We're going to redesign the whole ship. Bring up the CAD interface, Archi. It's time to build a spear."
